A federal lawsuit was filed Monday against the North Carolina governor and other state officials over a new law that blocks transgender individuals from using public bathrooms that match their gender identity and stops cities from passing anti-discrimination ordinances to protect gay and transgender people.
Two transgender men, a lesbian, the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina and Equality North Carolina want a judge to declare the state law, House Bill 2, unconstitutional and a violation of federal laws banning sex discrimination.
Equality North Carolina and other groups quickly attacked the legislation, but lawmakers defended it.
"One of the biggest issues was about privacy," North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore said. "The way the ordinance was written by (the) City Council in Charlotte, it would have allowed a man to go into a bathroom, locker or any changing facility, where women are -- even if he was a man. We were concerned. Obviously there is the security risk of a sexual predator, but there is the issue of privacy."

privacy or discrimination? probably none of the first and all of the second
I go to school in Raleigh and no one is shocked by the idiocracy going on here.
I don't know how the Governor though this would be a good idea, no one I know here supports any of the measures
Good. He had it coming.
I think this is VERY interesting and will set an interesting precedent. It's all going to revolve around how bathrooms are segregated by law.
If bathrooms, by law, are segregated by gender, then I can see this being an easy case, however it will basically nullify anything that separates bathrooms.
However, if bathrooms are segregated by biological sex, then I see this being a case where the law is upheld due to it basically upholding existing laws.
It isn't just bathrooms either

Pat McCrony [SP]heh[/sp]is awful and has always been awful, don't know how he keeps getting votes.
Surprised they didn't do this as every other state did and hide behind a "religious freedom" bill. This one is straight up dick out hate.

Yeah, go to his facebook page and it's a never ending circle jerk of "THANKS FOR PROTECTING OUR WOMEN AND CHILDREN"
NC Attorney General Roy Cooper has decided that he will not be defending this law against its challengers.
This whole debacle might be over soon.

One of my friends is one of the transgendered suers. He spoke on Democracy Now.
I don't understand how you would even enforce a law like this. I'm assuming this is mostly aimed at transgender people who don't pass as their gender.
