• Irene largest hurricane in the Atlantic?

While looking at a picture of irene, I have noticed something. Here is a pic of irene: [img]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/81/Tropical_storm_irene_aug_27_2011_at_1059_est.jpg[/img] and here is a pic of Hurricane Gilbert (Which is the largest the atlantic has seen) [url]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gilbert_13_sept_1988_2118Z.jpg[/url] As you can see, irene is much larger than gilbert (Scale may be a little bit off) And here is Typhoon Tip, which is the largest in the world(shown in middle): [url]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Typhoon_Tip_full.PNG[/url] As you can see, Irene is defintly a record breaker. what do you facepunch have to comment on this? sry, but the 2 others wouldn't go in the img tag
Irene is pretty big.
Irene is only big because it was almost a category 4 when it maxed out. Hurricane Gilbert was a category 5 with winds of 185mph. Radar data back then was mediocre at best so we can't really compare imagery, but Gilbert was definitely bigger and stronger. If New York City had been hit by a storm as powerful as Gilbert, the city would be crippled for months maybe years.
It actually affected a bit here, at Montreal. A lot of rain, strong winds, etc.
Typhoon tip was a high category 5 on the saffir-simpson scale, however the SSHS scale is only for North Atlantic hurricanes and north pacific hurricanes so they don't use the SSHS scale for typhoons. However, with max winds of 190mph sustained for 1 minute, and pressure of 870 mbar (gilbert: 888 mbar, Irene: 966 mbar) it was definitely stronger than Gilbert.

Is it still a category 2 hurricane?
Cloud coverage does not really mean its bigger.. it just has a bigger rain shield. [editline]28th August 2011[/editline] [QUOTE=booster;31992030]Is it still a category 2 hurricane?[/QUOTE] Pretty much a tropical depression now.
I've never experienced a hurricane.
Silly you... Even if it is the biggest it has nothing to do with how strong it is... This was only category 1 before it hit the east coast.
What's the scale of that picture, because it all depends on the scale of the image.
It was large but no not the largest, Isabel clocked in at around 530 miles wide if I recall ohwait it was 600miles wide with a 40 mile eye
The only hurricane I've ever seen is in Left 4 Dead.
Didn't have power for about 5 hours, but that's all here in montreal
DC Got rained on and winded. And not a single thing happened. I love it when the media over-blows everything.
Meanwhile in Texas, daily temperatures have risen to around 110 and it's making me actually want a bit of that hurricane action. I'm desperate for ANY form of rain.
i have never seen an hurricane.[img]http://plugin.name/7/4WEFu[/img] [highlight](User was permabanned for this post ("Joined just to repeatedly post link" - verynicelady))[/highlight]
Oh god, I live in NL, am I going to die?
[QUOTE=joost1120;32002438]Oh god, I live in NL, am I going to die?[/QUOTE] Yes.
I live on long Island, we got hit HARD. spent all fucking day cleaning up trees and shit
Man I remember when hurricane Ike hit Houston. I slept through it.:pwn:
The last thing I remember when I tried to use a surf board for the first time in a category 2 is being slapped in the face by it. I didn't even get in the water yet.
HOLY FRIGGIN SHIT that thing is huge. Is it the largest ever recorded? And..who woulda thunk Vermont of all places would be hit maybe worst of all o_0 Poor bastards. Donated money to Red Cross, hopefully someone gets a free donut or something.
I'd like to do a joke here but obviously, it's way too soon.

People living on the coastline up here in Connecticut lost their homes.
[I]Just[/I] got my power back after almost four days. We've had way worse storms and didn't lose power for this long.
