Do you remember when the internet was young, blossoming into existence, websites that now seem ancient and outdated were the talk of the world? Social networking was unheard? All of what we know today was young and forming, or nonexistent? All of what we have now evolved from something, and is built on the ruins of what came before it. Abandoned websites of every type fill the web, snapshots into a past age, or into the life of a kid posting about his favorite cartoon. Frozen in time. Just a few days ago I was reading an old discussion between two 10 year olds on a forum that hadn't seen activity in many years. What I was reading was from 2001, two kids talking about cartoons. Just think - now they would be 22. The last post was in 2006, an empty thread "Is anyone still here?" I came back to the website today, it was gone. Nothing left. The ghosts of the past, not just an item, like you would find in an old building, but a story. Someone happy, sad or otherwise, discussing video games or politics. Now it is years later, and, whoever that was, there whole life is different. They could be dead. Ghosts left by people who have moved on, forgotten. A dead website is a place that might once have been happy, filled with life. Now I imagine them dark. Whether it is the brightest colored web page I have ever seen it still seems dark and empty. Does this make anyone else sad, or is it just me? Just look at this: http://www.archiveteam.org/index.php?title=Deathwatch
I remember an old website I used to frequent, about the old game Carnivores. It's not totally dead, but there's only 3 or 4 people who post regularly, and rarely is there more than 4 posts a day in total.
I know how you feel OP, I totally agree with your view Also have a bit of nostalgia:
ugh i hate finding old websites, it's so sad to see something that someone probably put some time into, only to be forgotten and abandoned.
It was my home. Even back when we had dial-up I was there. If you remember it, you are a winner. If you remember Totse, you suck anyways because there's no denying RE was better. Too bad between the moderation going insane and the incredibly broken and late site update everyone pissed off. Or died. ...We miss you Defiler.
I loved the sound of dial up actually, but now I'm stuck with shitty quiet 2mbps bullshit.
Abandoned websites, particularly forums, have always mystified me. It's like finding a lost city, you can't help but wonder what caused the community to leave it behind.
I recently found my first forum post on the Internet, ever - April 2005, means I was 10 at the time: I remember making that avatar myself. I was so proud. :suicide: [editline]22nd February 2013[/editline] Oh, here's another one!
http://www.ddrfreak.com/phpBB2/ Here's a dance dance revolution forum that died, because nobody cares about it anymore. March 2000- October 2011 Also this guy asked if DDR would ever come back but got no answer which is sad. http://www.ddrfreak.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=136265
In a dying forum, each thread with a few posters feels like a little fire, a light fading and going out while the rest of the forum is in darkness... Slowly and surely, the last of those lights will go out...

Guys, I just had a thought. The same fate will no doubt befall FP at some point. How long until that time?
I wonder if FP died and 10 years from now someone stumbles across it, what they would think.
I just look at it from a different perspective, I know change is good, i have to just accept the terms that come with it, that includes these old websites which honestly, have no use just sitting there (like you said that last thread hadnt been posted in since 2006 think how much money they could make on that same page through these years if they had advertisments or simply discussions more relevant to the present). All I can do is try not to think about it too much.
Anyone remember theholylemon?
You can kind of observe this in the bottom of the forums area, aka, the bottom of the Hobbies section. Pretty much only a few posts a day.
Guys, I just had a thought. The same fate will no doubt befall FP at some point. How long until that time?
Probably a very long time. Even then we may move onto a spiritual successor to FP or people will group together and move somewhere else.
Anyone remember dougpunch
Anyone remember when memes weren't even a thing?
anyone got any old sites like this I can see? And would mind posting them?
Desperately trying to find the old Sven Coop clan I was in, used to have a geocities site but can't for the life of me remember it. Trawling through my old email accounts :v:
Anyone remember when memes weren't even a thing?
To be fair united social networks weren't that prominent back then. But I myself only started using the internet in 2002-3 or something. I really only started exploring during 2004-6 where things like "It's over 9000" and "This is Sparta" started to gain traction.

I remember when funny image boards and sharers were actually funny. Like back then when Funnyjunk was yellow, the content they posted always gave me a chuckle. Now when I go to to Funnyjunk, it's just bland. And dull. Just like the personality of the present internet.
I remember when Funnyjunk was actually a funny picture site to go to.
This is the way I see Xfire now. That was my first forum and community, and I was good friends with "Xfire" himself, Chris Kirmse. They bought the company, and he never came on again. Still plays Guild Wars though.
I remember posting on Myfavoritegames a lot when I was younger. Good old people flaming each other over inaccurate power level estimates in the cell & buu sagas. Can't even find their forums now. It's probably gone. [editline]23rd February 2013[/editline]
I remember when Funnyjunk was actually a funny picture site to go to.
It's just junk now.

Neopets and Gamespot System Wars forum I arrived to the internet late
Neopets and Gamespot System Wars forum I arrived to the internet late
The good old days of obnoxious music blaring full volume as soon as you open someones profile or pet page. I should resign up to see what it's like now.
