The /r/Dota2trade subreddit broke internal records today by a large margin when its user PAADA sold his ethereal flame pink War Dog dog for $38,000. The buyout price was met by a user named July who used another Redditor named silentboycd representing him.
Over in /r/dota2 a user named ColtonisWright explained why the War Dog was worth what it was. He noted, "Legacy couriers are a term coined for couriers opened within the first few weeks of unusuals being able to be unboxed. These couriers could come in many different effects, ethereal flame being the most sought after." He went on to add that the originally couriers could cover the entire color spectrum using RGB values from 0 - 255. Eventually black couriers started appearing and causing bugs, so Valve patched and limited the them to ten preset colors.
ColtonisWright finished, "The Wardog is the most sought after courier type, ethereal flame is the most sought after effect, and the shade of pink is very sought after. This combination makes it extremely rare, and one of a kind. There are only 4 other known pink ethereal flame wardogs."
I will never understand how people can spend so much money on virtual items. Even spending 50 platinum on a scarf in Warframe was a huge decision for me
What confuses me is how something like this got so valuable in the first place.
What a stupid choice.
I'd atleast make better stupid choices with that money, like buying a BRDM.

it's the only item of its kind in the game.
rare and wanted courier + the only color of its kind = lots of money for collectors.

I don't play Dota 2 - but do these function the same way as unusual effects in TF2? If so, that might explain the pricing.
i remember when a tf2 hat broke the $3,000 mark for the first time. crazy people
but is that just until someone uncrates another?
it's been discontinued
that is a disgusting waste of money and there is absolutely no way to justify it

Umm, they don't appear anymore, read the article. Heck it says it in the OP.
Ahh you edited it.

people buy paintings that don't look like much for millions of dollars.
what's so different here? it's as valuable and pricey as whoever wants it to be.
that is a disgusting waste of money and there is absolutely no way to justify it
except it absolutely has been justified by the fact that someone with the money decided to buy it at that price. goods are worth what is paid for them, and that particular item is worth $38k to someone, presumably with a lot of fucking money to spend.

Its not just the effect, its also the base courier.
You could only get the courier for a short time while a specific tournament was running.
Like beardyduck said, its the one of the few unusual of that effect for that courier ever.

yeah but how dare somebody spend their money on something that they want to spend it on
That might be more than what I make in a year.
i have an unusual war dog
i wonder how much its worth
So Valve already turned DotA 2 into Team Fortress 2, where people spend more time circlejerking over $32,000 virtual items than actually playing the game?
Great, and I was just going to get into DotA.

So in effect, almost exactly like a burning team captain or something. The hat is as important as the effect, so when both desirable ones are combined you get a hat that is worth a ton of money in the eyes of collectors (like mattie)
Thanks for the explanation, mate - it makes a lot more sense to me now.

literally a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of players from any game do this
go into any TF2 server (unless it's a trade server lol) and tell me that people aren't playing and are just talking about hats
A truly phenomenal waste of money.
I see it as more of an investment than anything. No more of those couriers will ever be made. With a game as popular as dota, the community is sure to thrive for years to come. That being said, he can probably sell it later for at least double what he bought it for.

Yeah, you obviously have no idea what you're talking about. Dota 2's items and economy are not like TF2's at all.

yes because 1 guy in ~1,000,000 players is totally the entire playerbase
How the fuck do you value it that high? What is there to compare to?

I don't know about you but a LOT of pub servers are filled with people who join, stop playing the game, and say "VINTAGE XYZ FOR SALE!!!!"

No, not really.
Maybe you joined a trade server?

I don't see it ever
aw yeah spending $38,000 on particle effects
I'm pretty sure one sold for 45k a few days ago, and I know at least one is possibly worth 60-70k. Crazy shit.
