Valve has promised to launch Steam for Linux before the end of 2012, and last month it was confirmed that an external beta would be happening in October. It’s limited to 1,000 people, but the point is Valve seems to be on track to meet the release target of this year.
What we don’t know is how many games Steam for Linux will have when it does launch. Steam for Mac had over 50 on launch day, and while we can’t guarantee that level of support will be reached, we can point to the fact 15 games on Steam support Linux already and therefore should be available on release.
The first of those games is already known about and confirmed by Valve as being a launch title: Left 4 Dead 2. It’s Valve’s test game for the platform and the first in-house title to run on Linux.
As for the other 14, they consist of titles that developers have already ported to Linux and decided to sell on Steam. The include:
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Cubemen
Crusader Kings II
Dynamite Jack
Eversion
Galcon Fusion
Serious Sam 3: BFE
Solar 2
SpaceChem
Steel Storm
Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP
Trine 2
Waveform
World of Goo
Those games were compiled using a program called CDR Parser which looks at Steam’s Content Description Record for each game and compiles a list based on certain criteria. In this case it’s games flagged as Linux compatible as tagged by Valve. With that being the case it seems likely these 14 games should be available on launch day of Steam for Linux.
I am curious as to what Valve's plan is for promoting Linux, Valve has put so much effort into optimizing Source for OpenGL and has been working with both nVidia and AMD to improve their drivers for Linux as well as improve OpenGL performance on their hardware. This isn't like Steam for Mac which was just to gain customers from the Mac crowd, because Linux currently doesn't have the crowd in the first place. Valve hopes people on Windows 7 transition to Linux instead of Windows 8, to avoid the Windows Store as well as ensure that PC gaming (and thus Steam) can continue to survive in the event that Windows becomes unfriendly to PC gamers (which it might in the future). Gabe himself said Valve plans to make it "as easy as possible to play all 2500 Steam games on Linux", which means Valve will be either be contributing to the Wine project and/or pressuring developers into making Linux versions of their games. It wouldn't be that much more effort for the developers already making Mac versions, as both use OpenGL
Technically, shouldn't they have a lot more?
Haven't all the prior humble bundle games been ported to linux?

From the article:

I'm guessing that means the other games haven't been submitted to Steam's Content Network or whatever.
I heard Portal is in the AppData, not sure if it will come though.
Killing Floor to come too.
Also can't you render Half Life with OpenGL?
Valve to bring down the Directx empire!
Indies I've never heard of... I guess its a start.
Indies I've never heard of... I guess its a start.
what
did you expect skyrim to be compatible or something?
Indies I've never heard of... I guess its a start.
It's definitely something. I'm really thankful that they're at least putting forth an effort to get Linux users some decent games.

Quake 3 or something, casual games aren't exactly fun imo.
Also, I just noticed Crusader Kings II on that list. I wonder if this means that EU4 will be in the same boat.
Quake 3 or something, casual games aren't exactly fun imo.
Yeah, Amensia is for casual mom gamers.
Quake 3 or something, casual games aren't exactly fun imo.
Get a load of this guy.
Valve to bring down the Directx empire!
hardly
hardly
it seems like OpenGL might be coming to Source games, even on Windows. Again, might
There's a good chance we'll have 2 different options on how we want our games to render just like in Goldsrc imo
15 games!? I didn't even know Linux had 1!
Quake 3 or something, casual games aren't exactly fun imo.
But Quake 3 is for Linux.
Surprised TF2 isn't on there
Quake 3 or something, casual games aren't exactly fun imo.
So is Serious Sam 3 casual then?
But Quake 3 is for Linux.
My point exactly, they should put it on steam.
My point exactly, they should put it on steam.

Surprised TF2 isn't on there
It's probably coming, they just had to model an ingame penguin that they could give away first.
Quake 3 or something, casual games aren't exactly fun imo.
don't play them then
Yes it was. Unless you can't understand English.. or this is part of your conspiracy..
Allright sonny, either you better smarten up, or you're not gonna last long 'round these parts of the 'net
We're probably gonna put Cortex Command on steam when steam for linux is out. We've already got a linux version and a steam on mac version so I don't see why not.
