Just so you all know I'm Australian.
So several weeks ago I received a letter from the Sheriff's Office, as it turns out it was a Summons to Juror for tomorrow, the 28th. I have to show up to the District Court building at 8.15am and assuming I get selected, I will be deciding whether the accused in a criminal case in either the District or Supreme court is guilty or not guilty.
I'm pretty sure I get paid, but I might not because I'm not actually employed right now. the summons says cases typically last between 1 and 5 days, but it could be a big murder trial or something so I could be there for weeks or it could be just the day if I don't get picked.
***UPDATE***
Well that was both interesting and uneventful.
Was early so on the way from the train station I grabbed a coffee (Perth people- Aroma is nicer then Gloria Jean) drank that outside the District Court building, then went in where a security guard directed me to wait in a small cafe/coffee shop. Sat there for a bit sizing up the other jurors, watching morning talk show crap (Sunrise). A few hotties.
Eventually we were directed through a airport-esque security checkpoint. After my new, heavily zip-laden leather jacket didn't set off the metal detector, I collected the contents of my pockets and the GDP of Portugal's worth of change from the x-ray tray, I went up a lift where I was given a number. We're referred to by this number and not name to protect an anonymity.
We all (there was like maybe 100 of us) sat down in a big room, some dude talked to us, we watched a cheesy video showing us what to expect, and then it was question time. At this point I went and took a piss, came back and took advantage of the stack of papers and magazines. Are issues of Time and Pop Sci from this year too much to ask for?
Then came the actual ballot to get a shortlist of jurors for each case. normally they do this electronically but they had to count it by hand because their "system was down." There were five scheduled cases this week, 3 today and 2 tomorrow. The various cases were aggravated burglary, assault and threats.
I wasn't selected for the first case, and then the second. Then this dude tells us that the other cases have, for various reasons, been cancelled, and thanks us for our service. I walked out, to the train station and went home.
tl;dr, got to watch a guy get guillotined.
masturbate while sitting in court
Get aroused like that guy at the rape trial.
shout non guilty when all the evidence is against him
or her.
jury duty is fun
sit around, eat subway, listen to music, get called in, sit around some more, hear the opening case, learn you have to do this for a week and miss work, etc
be that guy who votes contrary to everyone else
Make sure you're unanimous or you'll end up being 12 angry men.

That was a cool movie.
i enjoyed it
Tell the lawyer with a straight face that you can tell who's guilty by first glance, and evidence is for nerds.
tell them your gay and have to use the bathroom every 5 minutes cause of urinal infection.
They won't pick you.
If they ask you if you heard about it, say yes, then you can't come because you would mess up the trial
[editline]02:29AM[/editline]
Assuming you dont want to go
Objection!
You could fake mental breakdown.
Keep the trial going as long as you can be always opposing the decision of the rest. Like that simpsons episode... :v:
When my teacher had jury duty he got his travel and stuff paid for.
Tell us the stories and then WE can decide if he's guilty or not for you.
:cop:

They can't inform him or else it'd be an "improper" trial.
They can't inform him or else it'd be an "improper" trial.
I think what we'd decide would be "improper" anyway.
What do you mean? The first couple of days he listens to the Lawyers tell their clients' stories and why (s)he should(n't) be judged as guilty, then before the last day he posts the stories here and we'll vote guilty or not, then that'll be his decision.
Scream OBJECTION
And :smug:
I doubt I'll be allowed to talk about it, maybe just what the case is about or something.
I doubt I'll be allowed to talk about it, maybe just what the case is about or something.
Just tell us if it's rape/theft/extortion/etc
one of our law classes went on a field trip to court to observe a random trial
the case ended up being about some guy who masturbated next to a girl on a bus
[editline]11:09AM[/editline]
i guess one girl on the trip was losing it and they kicked the class out and we aren't allowed back
Get aroused like that guy at the rape trial.
Go on!
masturbate while sitting in court
Bring up the possibility of spirit channeling.
You better hope it's not a murder case, or you'll never have a life again.
tell us if anyone ruffs you up before the case op
If I ever got jury duty I'd just tell them my mum had cancer or something so I didn't have to do it.
