http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/10/justice/florida-zimmerman-backlash/
(CNN) -- Florida authorities have a message as the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial looms: raise your voice, not your hands. Anticipating that the outcome of the very public, and racially-tinged, case is likely to disappoint one swath of the population or another, law enforcement agencies have set up a response plan. Part of it is a public service announcement that the Broward County Sheriff's Office released this week. In it, a black teenage boy and a Hispanic girl urge viewers to "stand together as one. No cuffs, no guns." Zimmerman is a white Hispanic who is on trial for last year's shooting death of Trayvon Martin, a black teen, in Sanford city. Sanford is in Seminole County. He is charged with second-degree murder, and says he acted in self-defense. Prosecutors are arguing he profiled the teen. Millions of Americans have already made up their minds about what should happen. And no matter how the verdict falls, authorities worry passions will be inflamed. That's where the video comes in -- a plea not to resort to violence. "Freedom of expression is a constitutional right," the sheriff's office said. "While raising your voice is encouraged, using your hands is not."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRUfzs6I4jk <- Video
I've completely ignored this entire debacle since day one. Every major news source/media outlet is covering it with their own delicious glaze of bias.
Zimmerman is a white Hispanic
CNN everybody! But I would fully agree that everyone should be rational about how they dispute the verdict (like it matters) and not resort to emotion fueled violence. You're a worse person that Zimmerman if you decide to be violent as a result of his verdict. It only supports his defense and makes you look like an animal.
CNN everybody!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Hispanic_and_Latino_Americans White Hispanic is a thing but nice job launching your desk into the ceiling with your knee
CNN everybody!
As a note, "white hispanic" is a thing.
In the United States, a White Hispanic or White Latino is a citizen or resident who is racially white and of Hispanic descent. White American, itself an official U.S. racial category, refers to people "having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa" who reside in the United States.
[editline]11th July 2013[/editline]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Hispanic_and_Latino_Americans White Hispanic is a thing but nice job launching your desk into the ceiling with your knee
My wiki-fu has been outmatched, I bow to you master.
"Raise your voice, because if your raise your hands, it may take us upwards of an hour to respond to anything you do."

Plenty of black teenagers are shot. The reason this case is so popular is the differences in race and gun rights. CNN is emphasizing his whiteness to race bait the black community for ratings. The whole black community is standing behind Treyvon Martin and the whole far right Republican side is standing for Zimmerman. Its all politics.
I love how they continue to sell it as a "white man vs black teenage", honestly it is 90% the reason this case has so much attention.
I still don't understand why people think Zimmerman did nothing wrong. I can't think of a situation where defending yourself with lethal force against a lone, unarmed person could be considered reasonable force. [editline]11th July 2013[/editline] As for the race thing, let's be honest here, if a black adult shot an unarmed white child in a black neighbourhood (ie, the inverse of what happened) attitudes would be totally different

Nancy Grace's orgasms would flood the east coast [editline]11th July 2013[/editline] The media loves a dead white kid, as awful as that sounds
perhaps when that unarmed person is beating your head against concrete and putting your life in danger, maybe, just maybe that is justified
It isn't justified if you are deemed to have been the agitator though. If the court finds Zimmerman's initial actions to be the ones that prompted the conflict, then Martin's actions will be the ones technically done in self-defense. Basically if Martin approached Zimmerman, you're 100% correct.
Legally in Florida you are allowed to respond with lethal force if you life is in jeopardy and you can prove that it is. Whether or not he did anything morally wrong is a question for the ages. Personally I feel like Zimmerman fucked up first by getting out of his truck, but following someone isn't illegal.

There aren't any witnesses that can testify to this, but somehow Martin got Zimmerman to the ground, straddling him, and hitting him in the face and head hard enough to cause lacerations on the back and a broken nose.
You don't have much of an imagination, you don't need a weapon to endanger another's life.
When the other person has a gun you do, unless you can sneak up on them. The 911 calls make it clear that's not how it went down.
It wouldn't get as much attention as this case.
You're insane of you think racism wouldn't enter into the case of a 26 year old black man killing an unarmed white teenager.

If Zimmerman did what the dispatcher had said we'd have a situation where there was no death or injury

The media has been covering the entire case terribly and it should be put on the spotlight for it. I used to think Zimmerman was a racist, violent cunt and I aggressively defended Martin like most other people who initially believed the media's bullshit. 1. We thought Zimmerman said Trayvon is suspicious because he looks black, when in reality the dispatcher was asking for his race. The dispatcher's question was sneakily removed by NBC. This alleged statement was then re-broadcasted across various news-networks. It was later revealed that NBC purposely edited the tape, though without as much coverage. While they did fire who they allege to be 'solely responsible' for blatantly editing the tapes, NBC did not issue a correction or apology to the story. 2. The media took the high-quality colorized image of Zimmerman's bloodied head, but then made it black and white, and blurred it in an attempt to conceal his wounds incurred by Trayvon. 3. The only pictures the media displayed of Trayvon actually extended 5 years back, when he was a prepubescent 12 year old in order to solidify the image of innocence, and paint the impression "There's no way that kid could beat up Zimmerman!" This is also as bad as the people posting photos of Trayvon smoking or holding gun, but I don't hold them to the same standards as the media. But who cares that he was beating Zimmerman's skull against the concrete senselessly? He had a bag of skittles in his pocket!

And Nancy Grace is against Zimmerman as is anyone else
Just FYI on the coon bit, that segment of the tape wasn't edited but because the audio quality is shit there's a dispute over whether he said coon or punk Having listened to it about 50 times for that other thread I'm still on the fence about it

They edited this part:
Zimmerman: “This guy looks like he’s up to no good. Or he’s on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around, looking about.” Zimmerman: “He looks black.”
The dispatcher asked Zimmerman “OK, and this guy — is he black, white or Hispanic?” but that was removed by NBC to make it appear as if Zimmerman said that out of the blue directly after he was describing why he thinks Trayvon is suspicious.

Even the prosecutor acknowledged that he was saying "fucking punks" as part of his closing statements.

[editline]11th July 2013[/editline] I'm not in the courtroom so I don't know all of the evidence. I'm willing to cede that maybe Zimmerman truly did fear for his life and felt that firing the gun was the only way to get out of that situation. But it was a bad series of choices that brought him there, the most damning being his decision to outright ignore a police dispatcher. Was it murder? It's impossible to prove the malicious intent necessary, so no. Manslaughter? Maybe. Negligence resulting in death? Absolutely. He can't just play dumb either. He specifically did a thing he was told not to do by someone who knew better, and it got someone killed. That kind of irresponsibility needs to be answered for.

But who cares that he was beating Zimmerman's skull against the concrete senselessly? He had a bag of skittles in his pocket!
I feel like "the media" is generalizing a bit. Conservative news in general was in Zimmermans corner from day one. I distinctly remember conservative commentators, when nothing was really known about the case, talking about the possibility of Martin using the drink he had as a weapon. NBC should definitely be in hot water for doctoring the 911 tapes, and CNN in general needs to just stop doing news because it's becoming increasingly clear that they aren't very good at it, but I don't believe in a media conspiracy that sided with Martin. I saw plenty of pictures of Zimmermans injuries early on which made me consider the possibility that maybe he was genuinely assaulted and acted in self defense. I guess showing older photos of Martin was less than honest, though my interpretation of that angle was that it took awhile for more accurate photos to disseminate. In general though I agree with the stance that having unrealistic pictures for either party is yellow journalism and should be avoided.
