British actor Eddie Redmayne has won the best actor Oscar for The Theory of Everything, while Julianne Moore picked up best actress for Still Alice.Redmayne thanked his "staggering partner in crime", co-star Felicity Jones, and his "ferocious but incredibly kind director James Marsh". Dark comedy Birdman won best film and best director for Mexican film-maker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. It also won best cinematography and best original screenplay. The film sees Michael Keaton play a former movie superhero actor, who hopes to revive his washed-up career by putting on a Broadway play. Moore used her speech to raise awareness for Alzheimer's disease - in Still Alice, she plays a 50-year-old who has early on-set Alzheimer's. "I'm so happy, I'm thrilled that we were able to shine a light on Alzheimer's disease," she said. "So many people who have this disease feel marginalised. People who have Alzheimer's disease deserve to be seen so we can find a cure." Redmayne was honoured for his portrayal of physicist Stephen Hawking, who has motor neurone disease (ALS). Accepting his award, he thanked the Hawking family, including Jane Hawking on whose book the film is based, and said his award belonged "to all of the people around the world battling ALS". Richard Linklater's Boyhood won just one award from six nominations - best supporting actress - which went to Patricia Arquette. Arquette thanked "her Boyhood family" and "every woman who gave birth". "To every woman... we have fought for everybody else's equal rights. It's our time to have wage equality," she added, to huge applause from the audience. JK Simmons won best supporting actor for Whiplash, in which he played a strict drumming teacher at a music conservatory.
http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-31580656 While Eddie did a good job on Stephen Hawking, I felt Michael Keaton deserved it.
Rosumund Pike should have gotten actress tbh
I still can't believe Interstellar didn't win best score Only film soundtrack that I've ever felt the urge to buy
Honestly surprised Lego Movie didn't receive anything, or atleast nominated for Best Animated.
It deserves it way more then Boyhood. Seriously, why does Boyhood get so much praise. It was terrible.
Yess JK Simmons was amazing in Whiplash. Hes such a good actor. Deserves it. [sp]except for he was in the Postal movie[/sp]

I still have to see Birdman, Nightcrawler, and Whiplash edit: and Grand Budapest Hotel and Inherent Vice
Did 'Fury' win anything? That movie was honestly one of the best WWII pictures of all time.
Gyllenhaal should've got a nom for his acting in nightcrawler and Idk how he didn't
Honestly surprised Lego Movie didn't receive anything, or atleast nominated for Best Animated.
What? Lego Movie got nothing? That's ridiculous
I still have to see Birdman, Nightcrawler, and Whiplash edit: and Grand Budapest Hotel and Inherent Vice
Don't bother with Incoherent Vice.
Did 'Fury' win anything? That movie was honestly one of the best WWII pictures of all time.
The history buff and armchair general in me begs to differ. [editline]23rd February 2015[/editline] There is no way in any hell a disabled Sherman could take out an entire SS brigade. That's just completely asinine.
Honestly surprised Lego Movie didn't receive anything, or atleast nominated for Best Animated.
It wasn't very good.
It wasn't very good.
I disagree, I thought it was rather witty and a ton of fun. While I thought Big Hero 6 was great, I don't feel it was deserving of winning Best Animated (But definitely nominated).

Birdman had a Mexican director. It got so many awards that when Best Picture was being announced, Sean Penn said, "Who gave this son of a b* a Green Card? Birdman!"
I disagree, I thought it was rather witty and a ton of fun. It didn't really look like it advanced in animation technology at all.
And Big Hero 6 did? All the animation nominees were good, but Lego Movie should have at least been nominated. When you can look at something and not tell if it's stop motion or CGI, it must be doing something right.
big hero six was so intensive on global illumination that they needed to develop new tech and software (hyperion) to render it, so yes, big hero 6 did. not that it means that it deserved an oscar however, but i thought people would've been used to the animation oscar being a sham by now.
Redmayne earned that Oscar so fucking much. Good for him. Big Hero 6? Not so much
I still can't believe Interstellar didn't win best score Only film soundtrack that I've ever felt the urge to buy
tbh hans zimmers stuff is slowly beginning to sound the same, he's just been reusing the same chord progression since inception pretty much. it works, its sounds really good, but the last original thing he did was probably the sherlock holmes 2 soundtrack, because everything else sounds really similar. he's become a victim of his own success really, he found something that worked and now he's sticking with it, he's not yet tried to try something new.
wow basically everything / everyone who i wanted to win an award did. really surprised tbh
The academy is full of people with little way in proper taste anyway, in comparison to the general public, so no surprises stuff like Lego movie got nothing even though it deserved so much more.
As much criticism as the Oscars get, I still think it's miles ahead of the Grammys in honoring the best of the year.

Regarding the Lego/Big Hero 6 debate, is Best Animated Film meant to be a technical award for the film with the most impressive animation and technology, or an award for the best film overall that was made using animation? I always thought it was the latter
I haven't seen Birdman, but from what I've heard, it's just a bunch of actors patting themselves on the back

It didn't look much different from all the other animated movies.
Big Hero 6 was a fantastic looking movie. I also felt as a story it was good. Not the best animated film I've seen, but Beymax is definitely a new favorite Disney mascot of my own. Lego movie seemed like it jumps onto the same bandwaggon that a lot of western culture seems to be heavily into; intense and overbearing wit. When a super-hero movie is made that isn't just a bunch of AAA stars making witty zingers at each other - that is a super-hero movie worth talking about. Man... if Watchmen was made today, it would be very poignant commentary as it was for comics back in the 80s. Birdman does as great a job at being the mirror to Hollywood as well as Cape films that Watchmen would have had it been made after the Marvel Cinematic Universe come to reality.
