At this rate why even create new games at all, apparently Dark Souls is all humanity ever needs since every game out there seems hellbent on copying it!
can't wait for a big site to call a walking sim "like dark souls" completely straight faced

Don't worry, a student with average High School writing skills is already on the case!
- [sp] Walker Sim 20K18, is the Dark Souls of this generation's attention span [/sp]
The game doesn't hold my hands all the way through like a baby so that means its just like Dark Souls.
A videogame should be created which tracks the quantity of times it has been compared to Dark Souls online and gradually adjusts its difficulty in proportion.
I wonder how many of these people have actually played Dark Souls.
It's really incredible how Dark Souls swooped in out of nowhere to become the defacto best game of the past decade.

Beating Ornstein and Smough should give the journalist the official seal of approval to compare a game to Dark Souls, it would be like a generated QR code.

valve stopped making hl and l4d games
Code Vein and Nioh seem to be deliberate Dark Souls clones so I'm not sure they belong in this video.
Edit: Actually not sure about Code Vein. Correct me if I'm wrong.

CV certainly is trying to win hype by milking the popularity of souls
To be fair there's not much competition as far as good games go
But prior to that, From Software made Armored Core games, which I would call "niche." That was followed by followed by Chomehounds, a small success, and then Demon's Souls, which was gave Dark Souls the groundswell needed to propel it into the limelight. Couple that with LPers, streamers, and highlight reels of raging at the game, it's gotten where it is through interesting means, but was quite a phenomenon.
I would have removed that Code Vein comparison, since when It was revealed Bandai/Namco have included in press releases that it is a old school RPG with vampires and have been subtle that it's a souls clone.

You mean like that "prepare to dine" marketing? that wasn't even remotely subtle at all. they straight up used the hype of dark souls for marketing
Like that I don't find that so terrible that its a mortal sin because like hey, that's one way to get attention... but it opens the gates to direct comparisons no matter what.

that and its dark tone seems to be dark souls edgy, but we have yet to see if it wears it well. Awkward anime faces and ~vampires~ just seems lame.

Witcher 3 could easily be considered better in everything other than gameplay, even across all souls-like games.
Even then the game play is good, but definitely isn't dark souls good

Why wasn't My Summer Car there?

The "Souls-like" label doesn't need to die. It just needs not to be abused stupidly. There are games out there where "Souls-like" is the best way to describe them because that's exactly what they're supposed to represent and be marketed as, like NiOh.
Obviously if someone says "Cuphead is a Souls-like" simply because it's difficult then it's fucking silly, just say it's a hard game like a normal person would.
Modern games journalism is the Dark Souls of reading.
"If you just play games to be entertained, Dark Souls isn't for you" get out.
Modern games journalism is the Dark Souls of reading.
Just because it's a struggle to read, it doesn't mean it's the Dark Souls of reading, it means that your brain is trying to reject it's stupidity.
The word had lost its initial meaning, now it is but a jargon.

Same with The Surge, to be honest
Soulslike is fine as a genre imo, we've had Diablo Clone as a name for more then a decade.

From software also made the King's Field series which was the first ever RPG on the PS1 and which Demon's Souls is a spiritual successor of, even the original boss fight in Dark Souls 2 is a reference to King's Field V

I have a hard time taking the word "clone" in a positive way but yeah Nioh's gameplay development changed (was supposed to be those kind of hack and slash with lots of trash mobs) and pretty much took inspiration from Bloodborne\Dark Souls' gameplay and managed to made it unique in its own way.

More people need to play Shadow Tower, the proto-Souls DNA is the strongest there and it's a kick-ass dungeon crawler.
Don't forget Evergrace which had classic music like this.

using "like" is probably more polite than "clone". Although to be honest comparing a videogame to some other game is probably rude in general, and it is most respectful to just independently describe it.
