ROBERT, La. — BP admitted defeat Saturday in its attempt to plug the Gulf of Mexico oil leak by pumping mud into a busted well, but is readying yet another approach after repeated failures to stop the crude that's fouling marshland and beaches.
BP PLC Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said the company determined the "top kill" had failed after it spent three days pumping heavy drilling mud into the crippled well 5,000 feet underwater. More than 1.2 million gallons of mud was used, but most of it escaped out of the damaged riser.
The company plans to use robot submarines to cut off the damaged riser from which the oil is leaking, and then try to cap it with a containment valve. The effort is expected to take between four and seven days.
"We're confident the job will work but obviously we can't guarantee success," Suttles said of the new plan, declining to handicap the likelihood it will work.
god bless the oil companies, and in case t2l goose comes in here, god bless the transocean and haliburton
I expect it to fail.
Oh well.
I expect it to fail.

Expect? Hell knowing BP it probably will.
I don't know why they didn't do this in the first place though.
Sounds better then their last fixes.
I like how throwing trash at it came before this idea.
Can they just blow it up? If a nuke does it, shouldn't a few tons of explosives do it too? Don't know how this would work in such depths tough.

it would not work at all.

Haha exactly.
Robot submarines? That's lazy, fix your mess with your hands assholes.

Yeah let's send guys a mile underwater where the pressure would probably make their skulls cave in.
yeah let's send guys a mile underwater where the pressure would probably make their skulls cave in.
thats the spirit
thats the spirit
I forgot the /sarcasm.
I'll start believeing BP when their attempts stop failing.
Yeah let's send guys a mile underwater where the pressure would probably make their skulls cave in.
The pressure would snap your bones, crush your skull into mush, and so on.
It is roughly 2,200 pounds per square inch of pressure down there.
I fail to understand why they don't just harvesting the oil topside
if they were to open it up the pressure at the mouth of the tube would certainly be less than that of the water down below (huge pressures) which would make the oil fucking shoot out the top, would it not?
I forgot the /sarcasm.
Remember it next time.
Excuse me if this is a stupid idea, but this is a pressure issue right? Oil is flowing into the ocean because of built-up pressure inside the well?
Whey the hell don't they just shove another pipe in at a different location and funnel it off to another refinery?
It takes a long time to do it. That is how the oil spill in the 70's was fixed, after nine months.

It's flowing into the ocean because oil is lighter than water and wants to go up.
Which causes pressure, yes.

I propose a new law: any deep-sea drilling rig is required to have a relief well pre-drilled and ready to go should something happen.

They're working on drilling two relief wells. It just takes time.

This is what they are going to do now.

No human could go that far and survive. The pressure would crush the fucking person.
They should spend less money on these great 3D renders and more money on making them come true.

That's what I was thinking, haha.
Whoa they're huge.
Some more cool renders here: http://www.bp.com/genericarticle.do?categoryId=9033657&contentId=7061734
dont worry
this time, were sending in the best

Yeah, I noticed the same thing... WTF BP?!
Knowing BP it'd be much more cost effective to just ram the submarines into the hole until the oil is clogged in, instead of the bullshit they'll try.

Call me stupid, but the 3D renders...they hurt my head. All the fancy lines and whatnot.
Frankly it sounds less retarded than pumping mud into it.
