Mary Creagh described the lack of female train drivers in Britain as a "national scandal" and said that children's television shows and "negative stereotypes" are partly to blame. She called on train companies recruit more female drivers by advertising in magazines such as Good Housekeeping and Women's Own, and suggested that they need to offer more part time work. Mrs Creagh, a mother-of-two, singled out Thomas the Tank Engine for criticism. She said that while the books and television series have "wonderful stories" and are "incredibly popular", they have almost no female characters. All the main characters - Thomas, James, Edward, Henry, Gordon, Percy and even the Fat Controller - are male.
I like my women like I like my trains...big, husky, and coal-powered?
choo-choo'k ur privileges [editline]30th December 2013[/editline] my god that was forced im sorry
Thomas the Tank Engine is setting a poor example to children and needs more female engines to encourage girls to become train drivers
you mean encourage girls to become female trains
this show encourages people to become train drivers? if anything, it'd make me not want the job, fuck off am i driving a machine that can talk
I didn't even know Thomas was still a thing that people watched.
i don't see the problem with it. it'd be a good way to bring more women into the engineering fields if you could get them on board with the show.
I feel Thomas the Tank Engine needs more black people in it.
I can't see this really helping much, Thomas the Tank watchers seem to be mostly manchildren instead of actual children these days. I reckon they should just encourage the creation of more gender neutral children's shows instead of forcing it onto shows that have already run out of steam (no pun intended)

did she even consider that perhaps trains that can talk are a one gender species
There is also a lack of trains that properly represent foreign cultures. Are the any trains of African, Asian or Australian aboriginal descent?

Instead of trying to change gender roles with dumb tv shows we should have something like a year in the industry for boys and girls. 52 weeks full of different opportunities, show the kids how all the different industries work, be it video games industry, coal mining, law firms, office of the mayor, NASA, everything that exists. Only then a kid has enough exposure to stuff that he might be interested in. As this will be a logistical nightmare, maybe have it as part of the curriculum called "Work oriented Studies"?
I never watched thomas the tank engine with any intention of working at a rail road. I watched it because it was what was on at the time
But what about Emily, she's classed as a major character?
Of all the complaints I could hear about Thomas The Tank Engine, 'sausage party' isn't the one I thought I'd hear first
But what about Emily, she's classed as a major character?
Tomboys doesn't count. This train needs to be a pink princess.
I never in my life thought that Thomas the Tank Engine would end up in a scandal. Do some people not have anything better to do
Spice Girls should have male protagonists then.
I never in my life thought that Thomas the Tank Engine would end up in a scandal. Do some people not have anything better to do
Politicians have nothing important to worry about. [editline]30th December 2013[/editline] and bring attention to.
Tomboys doesn't count. This train needs to be a pink princess.
There was always Daisy the electric engine- she was quite posh but a bit lazy. As well as Mavis the diesel who is reliable and honest but suffers from OCD (She constantly rearranges trucks in the quarry). Other female engines include: Pip and Emma the Intercity 125. Rosie same model as Thomas but Lavender coloured iirc. Molly the yellow tender engine. Emily the stirling tender engine. Flora the tram. Lady the magic railway engine was "deceased" after being wrecked by Diesel 10 but was resurrected. Belle the search and rescue engine who has water cannons. Millie a french engine. Caitlin the express steam engine. There are plenty - they just get less airtime because the show is about Thomas. [editline]30th December 2013[/editline] ?Oh god I need to get a life. I look like some kind of Thomas the Tank Engine nerd now. [editline]31th December 2013[/editline] oh my god what the fuck someone gave me a title. [editline]31th December 2013[/editline] In for a penny, in for a pound. New avatar ahoy.
When I was little I thought Percy was a girl for some reason. But what about Annie and Clarabel? [editline]30th December 2013[/editline] Mary Creagh was selected through an all-women shortlist, lol.

That means that women should be car attendants not drivers (not my view, going by the article).
Why not have less focus on just the trains and bring back Shining Time Station, just with a few more human female characters? I'm well aware they'd have to cast new people as most of the original cast either dropped off the planet or passed away.

Just think of the sass that will come from this
