Hey DD. I'm not really know around here, I lurk more then I post, so let me give some backstory. I've been smoking weed for near to 3 years now. It's been great, I've met so many people, had so many experiences, thanks to weed. I love being high, I get so many ideas, so many different viewpoints, everything taste better, music sounds better and I feel so connected to the world at whole. Unfortunately, I recently discovered my grandfather on my mothers side suffers from Schizophrenia. A long story short, he ran out on my grandmother and mom when she was 19. He was convinced the voices he was hearing was God, and set out on his "mission". He was certifiably crazy, for example, after he was missing for almost two weeks, he showed up at my great grandmothers house, and tried to perform an exorcism by pushing her down the stairs...So he was "legit". Anyways, I was only just told about this in the last week. I'll admit, I kind of panicked when I heard the news. I know all us here at DD love weed. We can all generally agree its better then booze etc, but the fact remains its known to cause Schizophrenia where it is genetically pre-disposed to exist. Lately, not to sound dramatic, but I've been seeing and hearing things. I'll hear people call my name, but no one did. Ask someone to repeat what they said, and they didn't say anything. I'll see stuff visually, but whenever I doubletake its obviously just a normal object, but it looks different when I glance at it. This has been going on for a quite awhile. I'm worried that these 3 years of occasional smoking may have given me symptoms or/of Schizophrenia.. Honestly, it's probably a lack of sleep and a bad diet. I've been staying up way to late, and I've always eaten pretty bad...But I'm still scared. I love weed, and being high. But I know my mental health is much more important. So I'm quitting weed, forever. I decided to risk getting high one more time though, with some of my good friends, taking it slow. Where I'd tell them I'm quitting. I'll spare you guys details, but I went, got high, and threw up all over his couch...I don't know what happened, that has never happened to me and I've never heard of it happening. My throat wasn't sore or anything so I don't know what caused it...But either way, fuck was that embarrassing. Had to borrow my friends shower and clothes. Point is, I take that as a sign I definitely should quit. But, during being embarrassed as fuck, I forgot to tell them I was quitting... Now, I don't know how to break the news to them. I feel that I'm probably going to lose them as friends. Not because they'll hate me or anything, but I mean they smoke weed everyday really. Even when I did smoke, I only did it twice a week at most, I wasn't that "hardcore". If I'm no longer smoking, I'm sure we won't hang nearly as much... So that’s where I am now. I just wanted to type this up DD, figured you guys might appreciate this story...I'll always remember the good times I had smoking weed, and will miss it like mad, but its not worth it in the long run right? I'm already scared I may have fucked myself over, and don't want to chance it anymore. If these problems persist in the coming months, long after the THC should have left my body, or get worse, I'll contact a doctor. Until then I'm just going to hope I managed to stop early enough, and I didn't get "damaged" Thanks again DD.
You can always hang out with them and just not smoke, I have plenty of friends who don't smoke period but they still come out with us when we go to smoke. Granted it probably isn't a good idea for you to be around them at the actual time of smoking depending on how much self control you have

I'll probably do that, I trust my self control that much atleast. I just feel like they won't be "hey lets hang" as much if I'm not participating, thats what I mean by losing friends atleast.
More weed for them while still having another person to talk to is the way I see it. And it never hurts to have a sober person around, all my friends that drink love having me around so I can be a driver and they can enjoy themselves without doing anything too stupid
Yeh I hope. Anyways, I'm heading to bed now. I just had to type that up before, otherwise I'd get no sleep. Your the first to hear DD  Like I said, I haven't told my friends yet. I don't know how really, I guess something simple like "I found out my long lost grandfather has schizophrenia, I gotta stop smoking"
stay away from them sativas
Mail me ur stash first. Seriously though, best of luck to you.
stay away from them sativas
yeah sativa is the most mind altering stuff so you could try indica strains and smoking rarely, 1 a month or even less. Stopping completely seems a little drastic for someone who also has a poor diet and sleep schedule. I see sleep as being more important for mental health as my past sleeping pattern has caused my depression and i was able to right it. If you see any signs of a mental disease i suggest going to a doctor immediately. The sooner you treat it the better and going cold turkey just to see if a few months off the stuff works is a waste of time. Yes, schizophrenia is linked in family however there are a lot of other sources and possibilities that they arent sure about. Schizophrenia is a very mysterious disease where diagnosing and finding its origin is damn near impossible along with most other mental disorders. Now i know weed is a pretty easy thing to stop, but stopping it like this shouldnt be your solution. Go see a professional seriously, just to be safe because stopping smoking make not be the solution.
Any professional worth seeing is going to tell you to stop smoking weed if your family has shown signs of schizophrenia.
i used to be schizo but i luckily recovered [editline]25th July 2011[/editline] and schizophrenia is on my fathers side but he doesn't have it nor do i anymore
Wow man, sorry to hear about the news. It's for the best though, because I've seen someone slowly lose their grip on reality. It's good that you found out before it really hit you.
I've puked before, and I know many people who have as well, so that isn't a big deal :). There might have been a few stems, or maybe it was just really strong and your head started to spin.. Regardless, you shouldn't make a big deal out of that. And I think it would be wisest to stop, at least you had a few good experiences with the good ol' herb right? Anyways best of luck, hopefully you'll be fine :)

Sorry to hear that man. I just started smoking, haha. Well, best of luck to you, hopefully you get better.
A wise choice, a choice I'd hate to make

wow. you're over reacting.
wow. you're over reacting.
uhhh he doesn't want schizophrenia
uhhh he doesn't want schizophrenia
ok great if we're talking about completely eradicating the slight chance of developing schizo, OP will have to never go live in a new country, never spend a lot of time alone or be an introvert, never move to a city or an inner city or never grow up in one, be robust in handling stress, experience little social adversity, and somehow assure that he had a happy and stable home life as a child (prolly not), because it's also the environment that will affect his brain. if OP is bound to genetically develop schizophrenia, he's fucked regardless. quitting smoking won't help you, considering there's no quarantine that it helps the manifestation in the first place.
you do raise a good point there
Wasn't there a study conducted some time ago that proved that you could get schizophrenia from smoking weed regardless of genetic predisposition?
Wasn't there a study conducted some time ago that proved that you could get schizophrenia from smoking weed regardless of genetic predisposition?
yea, but it was for nicotine not weed.
If you've been smoking for three years and now only notice symptoms, I'd say you're in the clear. How old are you, by the way? Schizophrenia onset is usually in late childhood to young adulthood. I had similar problems and quit smoking for a long time myself. Got myself sorted and now I'm all good with the green again. Turned out it was bi-polar disorder and anxiety. I find that the weed 80% of the time doesn't exacerbate my symptoms. I'd recommend you see a psychiatrist before you swear off pot forever. Plus if you're in onset, get treatment now, trust me, the earlier you get treatment the better off you'll be.
yea, but it was for nicotine not weed.
No, I'm pretty sure it was for weed. Lemme see if I can find it
I'm only 17 years old, the typical age area for onset like you said. I'm more likely. Either way, I'm not risking the chance that some of the studies are right. They've said marijuana has the potential to "activate" my schizophrenia. Anyways, thanks everyone for the advice and posts. I'll still probably lurk DD so you guys haven't tottaly gotten rid of me. And as to medical treatment, I did some googling and it seems most people agree it takes 6 weeks for the THC to leave your system. I'm going to wait that long, see if I notice a change. I'm also going to work on my diet and sleep patterns until then. If stuff still persists, I'll go see a doctor.
Wasn't there a study conducted some time ago that proved that you could get schizophrenia from smoking weed regardless of genetic predisposition?
was it funded by the DEA? [editline]25th July 2011[/editline] the THC in your system is inactive you're not going to notice any difference in 6 weeks

Its a psychological you might just be feeding into it according to the looking glass self concept "self fulfilling prophecy". Thats why you should see a profession and do actual tests instead of doing this yourself. Im sorry but shizophrenia is nothing to play around with so wasting time trying to self diagnose and treat yourself is just that, a waste of valuable time. Also, shizo starts out in young people during the more important years of their life early 20s. You might be a little early/have an early case of it. Anyway, as i said many times before, seek professional help. [editline]26th July 2011[/editline]
was it funded by the DEA? [editline]25th July 2011[/editline] the THC in your system is inactive you're not going to notice any difference in 6 weeks
this as well, THC is stored in with your fat cells which is why it takes so long to leave your system, if you have a low metabolism takes forever, and if youre fat, it takes longer to leave to. Its not going to be sitting in your brain fucking with your thoughts unless you are smoking actively.

yeah ive read that CBD is good for people with schizophrenia [editline]25th July 2011[/editline] like i said, stay away from them sativas
the very fact that all of the studies connecting cannabis to schizo is mere statistics on who smoked weed before they developed schizo should prove that it's bullshit because that's the same very tactic used to connect cannabis to the eventual addiction to other drugs; that teenagers year olds smoked cannabis before shit happened
