• Singapore remains world's most expensive city, beating out Paris, Oslo and Zurich
Singapore has retained its position as the world's most expensive city, according to research by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).The top five most expensive cities in the world remain unchanged from a year earlier and include, in descending order, Paris, Oslo, Zurich and Sydney. The EIU's survey comprises 133 cities worldwide and uses New York as a base. It compares the cost of more than 160 services and products including food, clothing and utility bills. Singapore was found to be 11% more expensive than New York for basic groceries. And together with Seoul, it was found to be the most expensive place in the world for clothes, "with prices 50% higher than New York", the EIU said. "Most significantly, Singapore's complex Certificate of Entitlement system makes car prices excessive, with Singaporean transport costs almost three times higher than in New York." The information gathered for the survey is designed to be used onlineas a way to calculate the cost of relocating and living for expatriates and business travellers. The EIU said it was "very rare" to have an unchanged top five in their survey, especially considering the worldwide drop in oil prices together with deflationary pressures in many markets. Foreign currency movements and falling oil prices had an effect on the cost of living in several cities. Most notably, a weaker currency in Venezuela saw Caracas slide 124 places in the ranking, from the sixth most expensive city last year, to one of the cheapest this year. However, the survey does not take into account the recent jump in value of the Swiss franc. The EIU said that Zurich would top the list if that was included in the cost analysis. In 2014, Singapore replaced Tokyo, which topped the list in 2013.
http://www.bbc.com/news/business-31689124 Pretty surprising we managed to beat out Paris, although I'm not surprised that we are so high up on the list. Housing and buying cars are the most expensive things here, but aside from that, food here is fucking cheap, to the point that it is cheaper to eat out rather than to cook at home. I would say that its rather expensive, but somewhat manageable as a tourist, and you won't have to spend long here, but to live here is fucking expensive. Let me put it this way, Singapore is a great and comfortable place to live in. Provided you're somewhat rich.
It's fucking boring here too btw lol
Whoaa didn't know that. Went there a few times on holiday to visit family, didn't realize everything was really that expensive? (this was like 4 years back, last time, I think. Or more idk) Though we obviously went shopping in Malaisia, like the food courts and what not are like, okay priced.. right? Maybe eating out is just really expensive here. Then again we don't do food courts in the Netherlands (we should, those are awesome).
Also, let me break down some stuff for you guys, how expensive it is here: A toyota Prius: $154 000 (Not including the COE certificate which you pay $10 000 to own for 10 years) A 5 room apartment: $400 000 to $500 000 A t-shirt: $10-$15 and above Pack of smokes: $10 Bottle of beer: $10-$15 Dining out in food courts/hawker: $5-$10 Groceries: $10 -$30 and above Well, those are mostly rough gauges, of course it varies. If you want to come here, I suggest you eat through your journey here.
And perth? It's $29 for a pack of ciggies here come the fuck on
Sad reality of living in Perth is that the rest of the world forgets we exist. I still meet people that think the entire population of Australia live on the east coast....some of them from the east coast. I would've thought we would rank above Sydney in being the most expensive though.

And beaten in prison should you happen to leave your beverage on the bench next to you for too long Priceless

Yay, London isn't even in the top 5! Although it's still bloody expensive.
I hate that the actual list is paywalled. Anyone have a comprehensive list anywhere?
I guess Singapore is more expensive because its small and its expensive everywhere whereas in other bigger metropolitan cities are much spread out and you get districts where things are cheaper.
A Fillet O Fish cost $5 here. $5
A Fillet O Fish cost $5 here. $5
Bullshit it's $2 now
Bullshit it's $2 now
Without the meal
Despite being extremely expensive and over crowded. Singapore is fortunately safe from violent crimes. Singapore is so safe that you can walk around at night without getting mugged. Thought this island is incredibly spooky on the 7th month. But buying a house here will cost your soul. You need to get married or be aged 35 just to buy a house at a subsidized cost which result many people still living with their parents even into their late 40s.
And perth? It's $29 for a pack of ciggies here come the fuck on
that's lethal, I thought 14 dollars for a 20 a pack was excessive
Uhh, rest of the world isn't like Detroit you know?
Of course, but here, the probability is much lower.
Bullshit it's $2 now
Well it used to cost $5, but other burgers are still $5 and above,
Wait, so do you singaporeans earn more money or have lower taxes so that you can afford all that?
It's apparently calculated using these 10 categories; Shopping basket Alcoholic beverages Household supplies Personal care Tobacco Utilities Clothing Domestic help Recreation & entertainment Transportation and also these 3 to a lesser degree; Housing rents International schools, health & sports Business trip costs http://www.worldwidecostofliving.com/asp/wcol_HelpWhatIsWCOL.asp#howisthesurveyused [editline]7th March 2015[/editline] I think we're up there but I honestly don't think we're the most expensive city.
Wait, so do you singaporeans earn more money or have lower taxes so that you can afford all that?
Fucking low tax its like less than 10%
I want to visit Singapore and Malaysia again. My parents took me there when I was 6 back in 2001. Everything (seemed) was so beautiful over there.
