hi im 16 and i bought a guitar 2 years ago and only since september / 2 months ive started to practice seriously, i can already play the intro to beat it and crazy train by ozy Osborne - i could afford a new guitar or a new amp, right now it sounds pretty crap, mainly when playing a basic powercord, so is it the amp? ps im left handed but theres a few on ebay thanks
YES. I played with single coil pickups like that for 3 years until I finally got my B.C. Rich Warlock with Humbuckers. If you're going to play metal, yes indeed get a guitar with decent pickups.

A crap guitar through a good amp won't sound that great and a good guitar through a cheap amp will sound shit too. And you don't NEED humbuckers to play metal. For the most part, Iron Maiden's guitarists use Strats and they work perfectly well. There are many things to consider when buying new gear, particularly when upgrading from starter instruments. What bands do you like? What guitarists do you like? What tones do you like? What guitars look good to you? What kind of music do you want to play? How much money do you have to spend? Is there leverage in the maximum amount you can spend (£20 more or something)?
Fuck it I can play metal on a Fender Mustang ;) Buy something nice though, and try to get a really good amp if you can. If you're doing metal then check out the little Blackstar amps. I have a HT-5R and it is honestly one of the greatest purchases I've ever made (The other being my Mustang haha) I also think having nice gear gives you some incentive to stick at it because you've gone and put a lot of money down on it (If that makes sense...) But when you're getting guitars, do what dcalde said and make sure you get stuff that will get you sounding how you want.
you guys are clever, there was a few computer stuff i want but could be able to spend £250 / ~$300 on guitar/amp i only want the basic metal sound like Metallica but later on when i get good enough.. this sound
$300 really isn't much. You're gonna need around $450 minimum. For around $250 you can get an Ibanez RG120, Squier Standard Strat, or an Epiphone Les Paul. They'll be decent guitars that are a good strp up from what you have now. Ibanez: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ibanez-RG120-Left-Handed-Electric-Guitar-105319792-i1463464.gc Squier: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-Standard-Stratocaster-Left-Handed-Electric-Guitar-102679032-i1473224.gc Epiphone: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone-Les-Paul-100-Left-Handed-Electric-Guitar-101392157-i1150099.gc As for amps, as said before, a Fender Mustang will do you well but more more metal focused amp, get a Peavey Vypyr. I've played through both and both are great amps. Peavey: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Peavey-Vypyr-30-30W-1x12-Guitar-Combo-Amp-104922869-i1413606.gc Fender: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-Mustang-II-40W-1x12-Guitar-Combo-Amp-106197148-i1557506.gc If I were you I'd go for the Squier Standard Strat and Peavey Vypyr. However, it's up to you to decide what to get. Get what you think looks good. Get what you think sounds good. I can't find a decent video of the Strat being demoed but it is a decent guitar. Here's a video of the Ibanez: And the Vypyr
I had a Vypyr before my HT-5R. Great amp! I did a few covers with it on my Youtube channel. If you can't afford a guitar and amp then go for the amp first. Anything is better that what you have there, and it will atleast make your current guitar sound better while you save for a nicer one.
THANKS so much this is a huge help and you even found Left handed guitars that Ibanez RG120 looks delicious and its not even that expensive. And the Peavey Vypyr 30. omm man thanks I should hopefully be able to get those for christmas :)
I'm not personally that big a fan of Ibanez guitars, but it'd probably work quite well for the music you like. Not to mention that it's easily modifiable with pickups, tuners, nut, bridge, etc. The Vypyr is pretty much the perfect amp though. Small enough to practice with, loud enough to jam with friends and sounds great.
ah chears, so is it more about the decent guitar pickups rather than the amplifier? Its like when i play any power cord it just doesnt sound right ever
Pickups are more so for the sensitivity of your strings, it makes the guitar sound much clearer and pristine. If you're using some shit First Act 10watt practice amp...you're guitar playing is doomed to awful sounding. I have a Line6 Spider 4 (15 watt because I'm poor) with my B.C. Rich and it sounds great. If you're looking for a good amp, I recommend going to a music shop and checking out some more high-end amps. (I don't recommend going to Hastings or somewhere and picking up one of their Marshal amps...They're terrible, Don't get me wrong, Marshal Amps are some of the best out there, but I wouldn't recommend getting a cheap turd from Hastings or somewhere.
Line6 Spiders aren't very good amps, they're widely known to be mediocre at best. It's worth the extra money to get something that's known to be good sounding and good quality, like a Vypyr or Mustang. I deliberately didn't say anything about Spiders because of their poor reputation.
Avoid the cheap Marshalls too, they're really bad. Also your amp has the biggest impact on your tone, then the guitar and then the pickups (IMO at least), which is why it's really important to get a good amp. (+1 for Line 6 amps being shit)
Get a new amp. Your playing will sound better with it now and even more when you get better at playing. Fingers are your first step to tone.

I will agree I should try and venture through the wonderful world of amps/
Dan-Electro amps represent.
Never buy ANYTHING that says Peavey on it, ever.
Are you serious? Some of the best instrument deals around are from Peavey.
Never buy ANYTHING that says Peavey on it, ever.
Don't listen to this guy, Peavey makes some of the best amplifiers on the market ESPECIALLY for metal (the 5150 in particular being legendary) and their USA made basses are among the best, especially in their price range. More on topic however, if you are planning on buying a new guitar for yourself, I would recommend looking for a used Japanese Jackson or Ibanez. These guitars are well built, have generally excellent hardware and can be found on the cheap fairly easily. For example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jackson-DK2L-Left-Handed-/300806389900?pt=Guitar&hash=item460975408c A quick eBay search found a used MIJ Jackson DK2L with USA made Seymour Duncan pickups for $299.
5150 III is awful
therefore everything made by peavey is bad, right? That's like saying Marshall suck because they make the MG series
Everything Peavey makes is cheap, I mean if you're broke and/or can't tell the difference between a Peavey and a Marshall or Blackstar or what have you then I guess you could say they are "good".
What is your beef with Peavey? Every brand has cheap product lines, and Peavey is no exception. As such, the cheaper stuff might not be too good but the higher end gear they sell is good quality shit. Particularly the Vypyr amp line. They produce a wide variety of good, usable tones, including a good Plexi model. I can't vouch for their instruments as I've never played one. But on the amp side, if the Vypyr series is anything to go by, they're a fucking good deal.
uhhhh literally all I said was "5150 III is awful"
It was directed at the guy that said everything Peavey made sucked. Probably should've quoted it lol. Sorry!
sorry for digging up this thread again. xD But. What if I can only afford the one, new guitar or new amp?
I would say new amp, it will make your current guitar sound better for the time being. A new guitar will still sound bad through a bad amp.
I would say new amp, it will make your current guitar sound better for the time being. A new guitar will still sound bad through a bad amp.
alright thanks
I would say new amp, it will make your current guitar sound better for the time being. If you want a good sound then you should first invest in a great amp, a crappy guitar will sound ok in a great amp whereas a great guitar will sound bad in a crappy amp.
