The Great Negotiator says Canada and Mexico will be exempt from tariffs if "fairer" NAFTA is signed
President Trump on Monday further expanded his personal trade war, telling Canada and Mexico that he would only consider lifting possible tariffs on steel and aluminum if they concede to White House demands for renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Like almost every broadside over trade war so far, his latest message was sent in a Twitter post with little explanation. He also demanded that Mexico do more to prevent drugs from entering the United States as one of the conditions for lifting upcoming steel and aluminum tariffs announced last week.
The measures are expected to hit Canada particularly hard. It is the top exporter to U.S. markets of both steel and aluminum. Canada is also the biggest importer of U.S. steel and aluminum.
Tying NAFTA to the steel and aluminum tariffs shows that Trump is trying to use his new trade tactic as leverage, though it’s unclear if it will work.
That's right Canada, treat our farmers better and you'll get your metal that you want. And stop the drug trade, Mexico!
So basically, he wants Canada to kowtow to the US.
Guess it's going to be a trade war till something changes then.
Ah yes, blaming the result of war on drugs solely on Mexico again, how classy.
Why is he obsessed with "Fair"?
how not to diplomacy right there. All our positions, all our progress on NAFTA, out the window with one tweet because mexico and canada are not gonna negotiate with a terrorist.

his world is zero sum, either you win or you lost, there is nothing else
Why is he obsessed with "Fair"?
Anything that doesn't result in him getting out ahead is unfair, but since "I'm not getting what I want" doesn't encourage people to be nice to him he hides it under 'fair'.
That's the impression I'm getting at least.
This whole dynamic is beginning to look a lot like a dictator seeking appeasement.
According to Robert Cialdini, "fair" is one of the most powerful words you can use in a negotiation.
Thanks to Trump, he's "Semantic satiation"ed the fuck out of it.
According to Robert Cialdini, "fair" is one of the most powerful words you can use in a negotiation.
Explains the powermonger's use of it despite butchering the means of it.
so we're fucked by tarrifs, or we're fucked by this "fairer NAFTA"

I can't imagine that it comes up very often in the Byzantine world of trade law and negotiations.
I thought this was about punishing China?? Now he's mad at us all of a sudden? And he's demanding we renegotiate NAFTA to make it benefit America even more than it already does or else he'll punish us (when really he'll be punishing every American industry and consumer that needs metal) with bullshit protectionist tariffs?
Dear President Trump: Get fucked, eh?

I'm not an expert on international trade but it looks like he is trying to strongarm Mexico and Canada into agreeing with a more "fair" (""""""fair"""""") NAFTA. They weren't willing to accede to his demands before but if the alternative is tariffs they might change their tune.

As an open question; why is the President harder on friendly nations and two huge trade partners than he is with Russia, the country that openly opposes our influence abroad and interferes with our elections?
They weren't willing to accede to his demands before but if the alternative is tariffs they might change their tune.
Hopefully they don't. Tariffs would be easier to reverse once this chucklefuck is in prison where he belongs.
I mean, NAFTA has some pretty significant flaws, notably that there are no labor or workers rights provisions. The U.S. wouldn't have such a large trade deficit with Mexico if NAFTA had set progressive standards to improve Mexican workers rights - wages, PTO, working conditions, etc. NAALC wasn't added as a supplement until 11 years after NAFTA had passed, and it isn't that far-reaching, and it also has literally no enforcement mechanism whatsoever.
That said, Trump doesn't understand any of that. He's just mad that Mexico benefits more from NAFTA than the US does. No shit, they're worse off, and have more room for growth to occur. If the US were getting the economic gains that Mexico gets from NAFTA, and Mexico were getting the gains the US gets, it wouldn't be a free trade agreement, it'd be exploitation.

I guess canada and mexico are vaguely liberal while russia is conservative
Might also have something to do with the fact Russia likely owns the twat.
Maybe! wouldn't explain why he's so nice to duerte though
I wouldn't know, but I can tell you it shows up a lot in PR texts.
thats the point, it sounds great on the stump, but in the exacting, laser focused world of trade negotiations, "fair" is pie in the sky, your side knows what it wants, and what you're willing to do for that, their side does the same, fair is what you accept at the end of the day regardless.

NAFTA also predates any real environmental concerns. All these US casting jobs went to Mexico because they could and there wasn't anyone there to give a shit about the enviromental damage improperly managed metal casting plants can do, but then only under a democrat president would we ever see environmental concerns ever be center focus to any trade negotiations anymore, republicans just want more moneys.
