BETHESDA SOFTWORKS ANNOUNCES DOOM 3 BFG EDITION
id Software's Genre-Defining Game Returns This Fall with All-New Content
May 30, 2012 (Rockville, MD) – Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax® Media company, today announced that DOOM® 3 BFG Edition will be available this Fall and features DOOM® 3 and the Resurrection of Evil® add-on pack, both of which have been completely re-mastered. The package also includes hours of new content – seven new levels entitled 'The Lost Mission.' DOOM 3 BFG Edition is slated for release for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PC and PlayStation® 3 – marking the first time any DOOM game has ever appeared on the PlayStation® 3.
Re-mastered for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, this genre defining game and its expansion pack offers greatly enhanced graphics, deeply immersing the player in the demonic world of this terrifying horror masterpiece. Players will also experience a never-before-seen single-player story, 'The Lost Mission,' featuring seven heart-pounding levels that will once again have them on the edge of their seats.
DOOM 3, Resurrection of Evil, and 'The Lost Mission' have been optimized in 3D, featuring 5.1 surround sound, Xbox 360 Achievements, PlayStation 3 trophies, improved rendering and lighting, and a new check point save system allowing for smoother progression through the game. id® Software has fine-tuned the controls to bring the intensity of the DOOM single and multiplayer experience to the consoles, and DOOM 3 now features the new armor-mounted flashlight, allowing players to illuminate dark corners and blast enemies at the same time.
"DOOM 3 was enthusiastically embraced by gamers worldwide at its release," said John Carmack, Technical Director at id Software. "Today, the full experience has been enhanced and extended to be better than ever, and is delivered across all the platforms with a silky smooth frame rate and highly responsive controls. New support for 3D TVs, monitors, and head mounted displays also allows players to experience the game with more depth than ever before. We think shooter fans everywhere will love it."
As a special bonus, DOOM 3 BFG Edition will also include the original DOOM® and DOOM® 2 games, making it the definitive collection of the revolutionary games developed by id Software, the studio that pioneered the first-person shooter genre.
DOOM 3 BFG Edition has not yet been rated by the ESRB. For more information please visit www.facebook/Doom.
Update
Oculus Rift is also announced
Virtual Reality in Doom 3!
While Sony’s HMZ-T1 and Silicon Micro Display’s ST1080 have made a major splash in the world of head mounted displays by bringing high resolution and (relatively) low cost products to market, a key issue still remains — field of view. Field of View (FoV) describes how much of your vision is taken up by a display. Increasing the FoV means that more of your vision is taken up by the display and this often leads to a much greater sense of immersion. Most of the HMDs available on the market have FoVs of 30 or 45 degress. This isn’t much different than sitting in front of an HDTV that’s across the room. However, over at the MTBS3D forum, user PalmerTech is working on a project to crowd-fund a head mounted display with an impressive (and immersive) 90 degree field of view though Kickstarter.
The Verge recently took a prototype version of the ‘Oculus Rift’ (as PalmerTech is calling it) for a test drive thanks to John Carmack (of Id fame) who has taken great interest in the project. Mainstream immersive virtual reality gaming is coming, and this might be the first big step.
John Carmack is the founder and technical director of Id Software (responsible for games such as: Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, Rage). He’s taken great interest in PalmerTech’s Oculus Rift HMD and has been working on a re-release of Doom 3 which he intends to make fully compatible for existing HMDs and high-FoV HMDs like the Oculus Rift.
(Yep seems to be late, but still it seems people didn't know about this)

Late, but I still can't wait for it. I loved Doom 3+RoE
Why is this necessarily exactly? Every computer can run doom 3, why port it to consoles? I have it running on my mom's microwave oven as I type.
It looks the exact same as the old version. And it hasn't aged well. Shitty textures, shitty models, and when it said "new levels" I recognized every single one. Especially the one where pinky slams down that glass like a boss. Don't get me wrong. I loved Doom 3 and never played it's expansion. But I think it's way too late for a next-gen reboot. Might as well make a new game all together.

Excuse me but I thought not being able to see was the point of Doom 3? Get your adrenaline pumping and your gun shooting so the only way to can see is to use the basic weapons, or shoot often (mussel flashes)

Some folks spend more time on their PS3/360 or they always wanted to play Doom on their console. Not everyone likes PC.

i think you confused Doom 1 or 2 with 3.
I bet those "new levels" are the ones that were completely cut out of the original Xbox port of Doom 3 but were already in the PC version. :v:
no they are actually new levels
hope you didn't bet too much there
Don't do this. Go making a new one instead.
To be honest they're probably just attempting to restart the love for the game and attract a younger fan base to help support Doom 4. I can't blame them at all, however all the wording seems very sensationalist and overhyped. I'll probably buy it since I never bought Doom 3 even though I've beaten it before.
"Genre defining"? It was the original that defined a genre; by the time 3 came around we'd already been flooded with grizzled space marine FPSs
"Genre defining"? It was the original that defined a genre; by the time 3 came around we'd already been flooded with grizzled space marine FPSs
And by the time 3 came out it also drifted quite far from the original FPS carnage and went to dark space crawling.
I heard a rumor that the marine will be smart enough to tape the flashlight to his gun now
I heard a rumor that the marine will be smart enough to tape the flashlight to his gun now
it's mounted to his armor
Does this mean we get to fight more than 4 enemies at a time?
Still waiting on a price tag but I'm probably gonna buy it on Steam as I haven't played RoE and I'd love to have all the major Doom games in one pack.
WHERE THE FUCK IS COOP
I loved Doom 3, no matter what y'all gotta say about it being too dark. It was brilliant, and the coop (mod) was absolutely insane when you played it at LANs...
What. It looks exactly the same.
Or they could have patched in the fucking flashlight attached to the characters armor.
What. It looks exactly the same.
They have not shown any new footage yet and used old footage in the teaser. I'm guessing they're waiting until the full trailer until they show anything new.
Wow, that's dumb as shit.
I came here hoping for a remastered version of Doom 3 on the RAGE engine, but nooooooooo, it was something utterly stupid instead.
I think the trailer actually doesn't show the re-mastered version at all, and it will make people freak out about nothing.
Oh man talk about unnecessary
and DOOM 3 now features the new armor-mounted flashlight, allowing players to illuminate dark corners and blast enemies at the same time.
fucking casuals
Aww, I totally forgot that Doom 3 existed for a second. I thought that this would be the special edition for Doom 4 that came with a life-sized model of the BFG :saddowns:
Does ID want to put out anything that is not Quake V arena?
It looks the exact same as the old version. And it hasn't aged well. Shitty textures, shitty models, and when it said "new levels" I recognized every single one.

So you don't think the game will age well, but you also don't like the fact that they updated the flashlight gimmick that killed this game in the first place.

Killed the game? It gave it a challenge! Like meppers said, "fucking casuals".

In Doom 3 I wasn't scared of shit popping out, I was scared of what I couldn't see, as well as running out of air. Now I can see everything. Hell they probably gave the player a bigger oxygen tank to boot.
Am I the only one who read the thread title as "Doom 4 BFG Edition announced"?

That sounds like a good idea for a collector's edition of the game.
"remastered for xbox/ps3"
ok so you didn't change the graphics at all and basically all you did was port a non-scary action game
"id Software's Genre-Defining Game Returns This Fall with All-New Content"
umm no
it doesn't define a damn THING. Doom 1 and 2 obviously did but, doom 3 was pretty average IMHO. If you want a more modern game that defined a genre, try something like CSS or Penumbra.
it was a cool game last I played, but it was far from scary. Doom 1 & 2 wasn't meant to be scary. Doom 3 cannot be scary.
