I will be learning to drive as soon as 2013 starts when 17, have been looking at 4x4's since I will need a durable vehicle that can get me get across
decently rough terrain. Obviously we all know that they are gas guzzlers and cost a bomb with insurance and even MOT when things
go wrong. I will have around £3000 to spend so help me out what should I be looking at?
Jeep Cherokee.
4.0 straight six is fucking indestructable.
Gas mileage is *ok*
[editline]17th September 2012[/editline]
can be had (in america anyway) for like $2000 with maybe 150k miles on them
my 4.0 has 199k miles and its still chuggin along.
If you get a Jeep, you'll either get an amazingly durable and reliable offroader, or a gas-guzzler that requires you to pour money into it because everything breaks. Buying a Jeep seems like a complete crap-shoot; some people have amazing luck with them, others get nothing but misery from them.
If you intend to buy a Jeep, do some serious research into the vehicle first.

What would be the less guzzling and the less prone to break constantly also MAINLY the insurance.[/QUOTE]

That is for the 2000 Cherokee Insurance :S

Craigslist silly.

I'm British and tend to use eBay or Autotrader.
Pretty sure that Craigslist has British districts.

Rarely around my area to be fair, they concentrate in the south of england.
Toyota Hilux
Or
A Jeep Chorokee.
DO NOT buy one of the post 2001 models though, in England they still call it the Cherokee for the post 01 models, but we call it the Liberty in the U.S. and they suck as far as mechanical soundness goes, the Chrysler 3.7 drops valves like a bad habit, the new transmission they use isnt anywhere near as good as the older Toyota trans they used before and they switched to independent suspension in front adding tons more wear parts to the front end. As long as you get one of the original square ones they are built like tanks, you might be able to get them with a good diesel in Europe too, ours only came with a crappy Peugeot diesel for like 4 model years.
The older Nissan Hardbody pickups are really good too. I dont know what you call them in the UK, maybe the D21? Whatever, its the compact 4x4 pickup they made until like the late 90's.
And normally Mitsubishi's totally suck across the board but the Pajero/Montero isnt too bad.
I actually work as a car mechanic so I see what comes in with weird and hard to fix problems and what doesn't break ever for 300k mi.
As far as my knowledge of insurance goes you'll be paying out the ass for any 4x4 at 17/18.
Insurance wise as far as I can tell the cheapest is an older land rover.
[editline]18th September 2012[/editline]
You should get a Fiat Panda 4x4 Sisley.

would having a standard 200hp straight 6 4.0 be insurance suicide over there?
[QUOTE=NuclearAnnhilation;37713349]would having a standard 200hp straight 6 4.0 be insurance suicide over there?[/QUOTE]
Not in Norway
My white Cherokee was $100 a month because it had five seats and was registered as a regular car
My black Cherokee was $50 a month because it had two seats and was registered as a small van
They were almost identical except for the amount of seats. Same engine, same year, same everything basically. One is a Laredo, one was a Limited.
I don't think they gave a shit about the engine but more about how many people I could kill if I had a crash :v:
My vote is for a Jeep wranlger TJ or Jeep Cherokee.
I have a 1998 Jeep Wrangler TJ 4.0L w/ ~150k miles and it's still runnin strong on the street, and mud.

Yes.
[editline]18th September 2012[/editline]
Seriously though good luck getting anything 4x4 that won't bankrupt you when it comes to insuring it.
My vote is still with the Panda.

im curious, over here an engine like that is considered nothing and is pretty damn slow. is that overkill in england?
Any vehicle that can hit 60 in less than 18 seconds is a racecar in england.

I honestly don't think I know anyone with an engine over 2.5, definitely nothing over a 3litre.
[editline]18th September 2012[/editline]
Cars in the UK have small engines because our roads are smaller/narrower and we drive less distance overall, its just something that you get used to.
You could look for a little Suzuki Sidekick/Vitara, the older ones.
[url]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzuki_Escudo[/url]
The only thing that peaked my interest on that autotrader site was a Honda HR-V which appears to be a downsized wagon CR-V with a D series motor, can't really say how well it will do off road but it should do fine for some light offroading if you were to not put passenger tires which belong on a civic onto it.

That 4x4 Panda looks pretty cool though.
lol
crv's
dont get me started.
Toyota Hilux or Nissan Hardbody/D21. If you can't get one of those get an old Cherokee (80's, 90's).
How are you with miles? Is it going to be an everyday driver? If it's just going to be a mud bogger then get a Silverado, F150 or Ram. You can find a 90's to early 2000's one for up to $3000 pretty quick. Jeep Cherokee's are good, too. Wranglers are hard to find for cheap as they hold their retail value rather well.

This guy is in the UK by the way, so those cars aren't really so common over here, if they're here at all. I've certainly never seen any of them except the Jeep.
This will be my first car, I will use it to travel 34 miles a day both forward and back to my college.
I am in the UK so it will be hard for me to understand any of the American models you put forward to me or any discussion on how the insurance is like in America.
In my spare time I will be doing volunteering for conservation projects so it will lead me onto off-road tracks getting to the reserves so as I said previously, it will need to be still
some what reliable and durable.
Fiat Panda 4x4 fits the bill perfectly. New or Old.
I'm biased though because my first car is a Fiat Panda.
97 4runners with 5vZ-fe and manual gearboxes.
those thing are UNKILLABLE. it'll keep on going without any need to replace parts
Britain, so pretty much anything that's terrible.
Forget any massive american 4x4's that's for certain. This is Suzuki Jimny territory here.
My '92 S10 Blazer was awesome. And while this may sound bad junkyards are full of them so if you dent something or whatever theres nearly an infinite amount of replacement parts. Its got nice pulling power as well
Just make sure you get dat 4.3L.
Oh wait, Britian.
[QUOTE=Del91;37741609]Just make sure you get dat 4.3L.

I'd never live in Britain just because of the fact that all the cars there have like a 1.1L engine that does a max like 50 mph. possibly less. :v:
