McALESTER, Okla. — What was supposed to be the first of two executions here Tuesday night was halted when the prisoner, Clayton D. Lockett, began to twitch and gasp after he had already been declared unconscious and called out “man” and “something’s wrong,” according to witnesses.
The administering doctor intervened and discovered that “the line had blown,” said the director of corrections, Robert Patton, meaning that drugs were no longer flowing into his vein.
At 7:06 p.m., Mr. Patton said, Mr. Lockett died of a heart attack.
Mr. Patton said he had requested a stay of 14 days in the second execution scheduled for Tuesday night, of Charles F. Warner.
It was a chaotic and disastrous step in Oklahoma’s long effort to execute the two men, overcoming their objections that the state would not disclose the source of the drugs being used in a newly tried combination.
It did not appear that any of the drugs themselves failed, but rather the method of administration, but it resulted in what witnesses called an agonizing scene.
All the people that support the death penalty must be rock hard right now.
Everytime that winner rating is clicked you can hear the revenge boners popping
So... did they try new lines and tubing to go with the new drugs, or is this just a 'oops' moment...?

ew what
So... did they try new lines and tubing to go with the new drugs, or is this just a 'oops' moment...?
We don't know what the drugs were. Confidential and probably experimental.
Crazy how they're allowed to do that.
I think that efforts to make executions humane are an incredibly backwards way of absolving ourselves of the guilt that comes with state sponsored murder. Every time an execution is botched like this and a human being is put in agony before our very eyes, we are forced to witness the true brutality of the death penalty, and we don't like it so we try to make it go away without actually stopping what we are doing.

Evidently the kind that causes heartattacks in low-enough doses. But I was more pointing out that it didn't sound like the drugs were the 'problem' ultimately, but the line injecting said drugs.

I want to believe that not every instance of that rating in this thread is due to such cruelty of mind.

Its not about being humane. Its about being presentable.
I really don't understand why we use lethal injection, like I'm against the death penalty, but it seems like such a fucking crapshoot. It seems only slightly better than being hung.
I'll take a firing squad over lethal injection any day.

No gore, minimal pain, and no bad smells of burnt flesh. I'd say that's a good way of putting it.
His just a highlander, better bring in another immortal so they can duke it out
Mr. Lockett was convicted of shooting a 19-year-old woman in 1999 and having her buried alive. Mr. Warner, condemned for the rape and murder of an 11-month-old girl in 1997
At least include the charges in the OP.
At least include the charges in the OP.
Charges are irrelevant to what happened. Just because someone is a monster doesn't mean you have a right to be a monster to them, if the law says they are to die of lethal injection then fine, they die of lethal injection but the least you can do is give them the opportunity to die with some shred of dignity and without an exorbitant amount of pain.
If we deem someone unfit to live in our society to the point where they must die, there is no reason to inflict them with pain as they die, it gains nothing but petty revenge.
Punishments for criminals are supposed to disencourage crime or keep dangerous individuals away from innocents, needless pain and suffering doesn't affect the second goal at all, and is a barbaric way to achieve the first.
Now I'm wondering if this is a case like Law Abiding Citizen where someone wanted him to suffer.

Doesn't really justify

This
Oh yes, because baby rapist/murderers and a guy who BURIED SOMEONE ALIVE can sure be rehabilitated into society. I'd rather have them dead than them being out and walking around in 20-30 years.

I agree.
Though I was under the impression that it was an accident

i don't necessarily disagree, but if there is going to be executions they have to be done professionally and humanely and this was neither. and refusing to disclose the chemicals they use is ridiculous
I was under the impression that it was an accident
These drugs work, but it was a hardware malfunction. It's humane, it's just that this prison fucked up.

yes because the only realistic options we have are ending them or releasing them with absolutely no efforts toward rehabilitating them

One of them RAPED AND MURDERED A ELEVEN MONTH OLD BABY
Another one SHOT A WOMAN AND BURIED HER ALIVE

You don't always die instantly following a gunshot wound to the head. It is not pretty.

This man shot a 18 year old girl and tried to bury her while she was still alive.
murder is never humane
Also, tell that to these guys.
You don't always die instantly following a gunshot wound to the head. It is not pretty.
Firing squads aim for the chest, not head.
I'm naive in the subject, how can you fuck up so bad? Can you not just do a straight single shot to the heart and kill someone in seconds?
I'd rather have something like that neck breaker apparatus from Cloud Atlas.
Rather than lethal injection anyway.

5 marksmen with high powered rifles
I'll take my chances.
.50 cal BMG to the head. They would have no head left to feel with. Situation resolved.....
