• Michigan Ranks as Fourth-Highest State for Children Skipping Vaccinations
What's the matter with Michigan? We're the fourth-highest state for kids skipping out on vaccinations because their parents claim a personal or religious exemption. That means that less than 72 percent of young children and 63 percent of teenagers are fully immunized, the Michigan State Medical Society reports. And that's why it's not a surprise when the Centers for Disease Control reports that diseases that used to be virtually eradicated like measles, mumps and whooping cough are coming back with a vengeance. That can happen even when most of the population is immunized. Take whooping cough, which has a rising death rate. Research by Johns Hopkins University shows that the disease doesn't spread as long as between 93 and 95 percent of people in an area are vaccinated. But if a small number of kids aren't immunized, a community can be at risk. And it's those who can't get shots, like babies, who are more likely to then contract the disease. Only Vermont, Idaho and Oregon have more exemptions than Michigan. It should be noted that South Carolina, Mississippi and West Virginia don't even consider this public health issue important enough to gather data upon, so those states may boast even worse rates than us. So why is this a problem in Michigan? The process to opt out from immunizations here is fairly easy. Unlike roughly 30 states, we allow parents to claim both religious and philosophical reasons.
nice. "your parents dont believe in vaccines i hope you suffer"
Because everything said on the internet is true right? Diseases that have all been nearly eradicated are being allowed back into human domain only because of something bullshit like "I don't believe in vaccines". I think you care about the wrong thing in this thread..

I dont think a child knows enough to make a decision about vaccines. Who are the real victims here?

"Vaccination avoidance isn't a problem. Ignore it and it'll go away. Vaccinations are kinda bs anyway." So much stupidity. Get vaccinated kids! It'll save lives.

And it's not always a case of being "misinformed", like it says in the article it's also because of religious and philosophical views. I've met people who KNOW scientifically why vaccines work but still choose not to vaccinate their kids just because of "religious views"

And soon: Michigan ranks fourth in the country for reemergence of curable diseases in children

Not much we can really do besides get ourselves vaccinated and live it up while everybody else has the sniffles.
Hrmmm, a small sorta painful needle in the arm? or a month's worth of crippling illness? Yeah I took the former last month.
Reminds me of an interesting moment in my stats class in high school. The teacher starts talking about how statistics can be used for bad purposes, and started talking about that one study that found a correlation between autism and vaccinations. To her surprise, most of the kids in the class went "Yeah totally, that's why I didn't get vaccinated!" And, of course, "Why get the flu shot? Just get over it. It's not that bad." These people have apparently never heard of herd immunity, or of people with weak immune systems. Out of fucking 25 people, maybe 3 were vaccinated. This was a goddamn PUBLIC SCHOOL. How is this possible? Aren't you required by law to show proof of vaccination? This was in Michigan by the way.

Of course I was properly vaccinated for all curable diseases, since I'm perfectly healthy and don't need to be harbouring pathogens for those with bad immune systems.
But I know a kid who got vaccinated and he's autistic. It must be connected!
"I hope they all gets measles."
Do you not know anything about writing. People do this. Broad paint strokes get the job done.
The stuff I hear about where I live cracks me up. I don't how people can be so ignorant as to not trust vaccinations. If they were dangerous, many more people would be dead or sickened.
