Pedestrian dies after being hit by Toronto police cruiser leading funeral procession

Just north of Rexdale Blvd., a woman tried to cross three northbound lanes in front of the mourners as the police escort was coming up the passing lane to get to the front of the procession.
It hit her. She died there on the road.
The collision at about 12:30 p.m. shut down a stretch of the highway from Rexdale Blvd. to Queen’s Plate Dr. and sparked a probe by the Special Investigations Unit. Hundreds of passersby from shopping complexes on either side of the road came up to the yellow police tape strung between trees to observe.
Brown and others, mourning one loss of life, suddenly became part of another. Their cars were part of the investigation and couldn’t be moved for hours.
Teary-eyed and shaken, Brown said the mourners had been inching along the two outside lanes of the highway. The hearse and some lead cars were up ahead. The inside lane, next to the median, was clear.
The Toronto Traffic Services division cruiser escorting the mourners moved up that inside lane, passing the procession on its way to clear the next intersection at Queen’s Plate Dr.
Brown estimated the cruiser was travelling between 60 and 70 kilometres an hour, flashing its lights. The speed limit there is 70 km/h.
The woman made it across the two lanes in front of the procession, but not the third.
“She popped out in front of (the cruiser) and before he could do anything, he struck her,” said Brown. “She was in the air, flipped over a couple times, and hit the ground … She fell behind my car.”
The mourners huddled on the side of the highway, dressed in black, watching investigators measuring distances, setting out evidence markers, taking photographs.
“It’s crazy, it’s been a crazy day,” said Brown.
Marva Black, who was also in the procession, choked up as she said quietly that the incident was “very traumatic.”
“I think she didn’t pay much attention to the next lane and she stepped out,” said Black. “I saw her go up and come down. Everything was just happening all at once.”
The hearse and some cars at the front of the procession still made it to the cemetery to bury Roland Fletcher, who was 73 when he died.
The police cruiser sat on the highway, its windshield cracked, its right side mirror dangling, the red and white lights on the roof still flashing, hours after the collision.
About 10 metres behind it lay the woman’s body, covered in an orange blanket. People gasped when they saw it. Some cried.
The body was removed at about 3:45 p.m. An hour later, a tow truck came for the cruiser.
The nearest crosswalks are at major intersections hundreds of metres away.
The SIU, the province’s police watchdog, has taken over took over the investigation. Spokesman Frank Phillips said eight civilian witnesses were interviewed and the victim’s family has been notified. [/quote]

And making jokes about children being killed horrifically all the time isn't?This place makes jokes about people dying all the time, yet sometimes there is this random event where everyone gets butthurt over one. Hell, there have been plenty of jokes about the Aurora shooting well received here already.
