Good people sometimes do dumb things, or say something thoughtless. But that's not a good reason to damn them, or destroy their online reputation. So I was alarmed to read about a new Kickstarter campaign for a website called Social Autopsy that aims to build a "digital footprint" database of those who use social media to spread hate.

Social Autopsy says it will officially launch when it has created 100,000 profiles (it claims to already have over 20,000) and is encouraging internet users to submit new entries. Although I recognise the problems faced by the victims of online abuse, the idea of a website building a searchable database of "real profiles" of alleged culprits sends a shiver down my spine.
Website is down and the Kickstarter project had its funding cut off at the moment. More info if you're wondering.

They also plan on using these same methods on minors, including children.
helldump found a new form
glad it was killed off please tell me it is done
I aint gonna put it lightly.
The people behind this are fucking brain dead idiots who can't look past their own nose.
Literal cancer, I can see this being abused (particularly by SJWs) as a platform to harass people for holding different/controversial opinions. Trying to 'police' the internet like this is doomed to fail and I can see this place getting swarmed if they still manage to go through.
This will do literally the exact opposite from stopping harassment lol, you're only making harassment much easier.

This is not what cyberbullying looks like. This is somebody ranting about how much they hate the letter U.
This is absolutely retarded and I hope it gets shut down by some form of legal authority.
Well, this is definitely gonna stop online harassment... by turning it into offline harassment.
How morally corrupt do you have to be to think that this is a good idea? Ruining people's lives over stuff they post online?
If online harassment really so serious that you feel endangered by it, perhaps you should report the harassers to the site owners and the police. But I guess that would just be too sane.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure the website can't legally exist because it's illegal to publish someone's personal information without their consent.
instead of funding an educational program that promotes positive thinking and how to ignore online bullying you create something that is cynical, harmful and vile and indirectly promotes death threats and possibly damages to reputation because you're tired of 'being insulted on the internet by EVIL EVIL TROLLS'
the fact that they make doxxing seem like a positive movement is so fucked
Counter question:
What if this site gets used for actual bullying?
As in, if I hate a person online, I can just fill out a profile on him with some very nasty things on it, even if that person is not writing harmful things themselves.
Such a Service does more damage than good, essentially being a breeding ground for the very thing they are trying to "defeat".
They are essentially trusting anonymous users with highly sensitive and reputation damaging content, without checking if the allegations are real or not. Faking screenshots by manipulating HTML content on a tweet or a forum post is hilariously easy and such things should never count as actual evidence for anything ever.
I know a few of you are saying the SJW types are gonna abuse this but I can see 4chan/8chan dog piling it out of existence on day one, or at the very least abusing it themselves.
also fucking lol

They already announced they'd accept that as collateral damage, pretty sure it's in the video in the OP. (Of course they'd get sued into oblivion one more time for that alone.)

Word of mouth from Tumblr implies that this image circulated from, no surprise, Encyclopedia Dramatica which just makes it even more laughable.
Holy shit that's basically KGB level of reports only run by people not the government. What the fuck?

It's pretty naive to think that these posts are going to be a minority.
Unless that they mean they accept the far majority of their Database being intentional reputation damages to innocent people and troll posts as collateral damage.

Its a really bad idea to have some kind of crowd sourced, unregulated, vigilante/bullying database.
In the best case scenario its leading to people losing their privacy.
In the worst case scenario it could be used by rapists, murderers and thugs to make someones life a living hell.
What the hell were they thinking.
edit: end bullying and harassment by using bullying and harassment. Its wrong on a multitude of levels. The people who use these details, are they going to be entered into the database? Are they going to enter themselves into the database for enabling/advocating this bs

Now that's triggering my twitter PTSD.
How out of touch these people are.
Stupid people with good intentions are ruining the world.

Seems bizarre that they'd be accepting of people's lives literally being ruined by their database as collateral, considering their database is there to try and hold people accountable for the things they say online.
Also the simple reason this wouldn't work is exactly that. People posting on this site will not be accountable for their actions so now its just another platform that if it was used seriously would give bullies a tool to destroy many innocent people's lives. Tweets/statuses/etc are so easy to fake that nowadays you can go on websites that let you put in a Twitter user's handle or Facebook profile and you can create a real looking Tweet/status by them with 0 effort involved.
Only a fool would trust anything that a system like this produced.
Does this mean the creators of this are fine with being doxxed themselves? Are they going to complain when it inevitably happens, if it hasn't already?
Naturally. I'm sure groups involve in making this come true will seemly have no information on their site because you know piracy.
everything in that kickstarter page makes it seem like some kind of prank or satirical thing

Pictures like this make it hard to take the concept of cyberbullying seriously. Online harassment is definitely a thing, but it looks a hell of a lot uglier than this. You get something like this, you just laugh and ignore it. You get somebody trying to systematically fuck up your life? There's nothing wacky about that.

I don't think the point of this is to necessarily stop online harassment, but more to try and remove anonymity from the internet, which they see as a bad thing because it allows people to eliminate the "consequences" for saying anything they might find offensive or disagreeable. Since site owners won't volunteer to remove anonymity, they see this as their way of working around that.

Ye, I get what they're trying to do. I'm just laughing at their choice of visual aids. And, really, the execution of the entire project in general.
"We have secured a provisional patent for our technology." What technology? This is such a stupid idea.

Alas. Giving the people you're trying to reach out to for money a bad impression of what you consider "cyberbullying" is an awful move, and you'll probably just end up pissing off actual cyberbullying victims by undermining the torment they go through.
That's not to mention how pretty much every single concept of this project is downright horrid. but you know.

"there are no bad tactics, only bad targets"
Because the world really needs an Internet GeStaPo dedicated to find and ruin the lives of people standing in the way of progress with their wrong and problematic opinions.
It's some serious Russian style bullshit.
