Even though it seems overkill, it may just work.
Not absolutely horrible I guess, I usually buy my games new anyway. I hope they decide to remove the restriction at some point when a game gets old enough though.
It's like buying a car but it only works as long as you drive it, otherwise it will stop working after 500 meters. That's the biggest drawback to those kind of system.
Oh, thought it'll be using Steamworks since it's THQ.
What will they win? More piracy!
Thinking about it, buying this game on steam will have no such problem with this type of drm as the game is already unable to be resold or transfered, and this code is only for creating/activating a multiplayer account, which also unlocks the rest of the single player. In essence this is the same as having a standalone version of the steam type drm, but with a no internet mode which acts as a demo.
It's like buying a car but it only works as long as you drive it, otherwise it will stop working after 500 meters.
bad analogy because that isn't how it works at all. ea have already been doing this and is a way of making money off of pre-owned sales.
I buy a shitload of games pre-owned, so I hope this doesn't catch on with everyone. I'm fine with it for the most part however.
Well, there you go homefront. Seemed interesting, not interested any more.
Well, there you go homefront. Seemed interesting, not interested any more.
This DRM is not even harsh, it's pretty standard.
Nothing really dramatic about this. Copying games, lending them to others our giving them away isn't really something you should be allowed to do, even though we certainly do want to. As with any other product in the world they are all meant to be used until broken, thrown away when you don't need it or be stored in the attic. By re-selling a product you're simply harming the industry (not that they actually have any problems with this at all) as the same product gets used by two different people in different houses but only gets them one sale. But it's a very good point about the shop problem. It's quite a retarded system, any product has a set price, if it's sold for exactly that price then everyone who made it in any way and got it shipped to the store gets the money they demanded for it (but the store itself is left with no income). But any higher price goes PURELY to the store, if it so sells for 2x the original price the store would get exactly as much for the product as the whole goddamn team of people that worked on making, sealing, producing, shipping, etc the product.
This DRM is not even harsh, it's pretty standard.
Forcing me to buy the game again (or 10$ mp pass) when I login from a different IP is pretty harsh imo.
This DRM is not even harsh, it's pretty standard.
Not its not, its just what they made it and seemingly youre ok iwht it now. Its a shame how fast you adapted it as "Meh, its there anyway"
Makes no sense to me. I understand the multiplayer account only works for me. Why wouldn't I be able to lend the account to a friend? Does it bind to some hardware ID? E.g. BIOS ID etc. in order to prevent use of said account on other PCs? [editline]6th January 2011[/editline] Besides that, this will only get pirates more furious to bypass that system.
how does it work exactly?

[editline]6th January 2011[/editline] There really is no problem with giving this game away or lend it. Just make the account and password something random or at least something that isn't your standard name and password, and voilà, just give the people you give the game the nickname and password for that account, then they can play it too. [editline]6th January 2011[/editline] That is at least if the article fully reflects all the details (which it probably doesn't).
This essentially means that when you buy Homefront, you do not own the rights to play the multiplayer game
Does the prevention of levelling up after a certain point really constitute having no rights to play the multiplayer? Assuming it doesn't stop you playing at that point, I don't really see what the problem is?
