Night Trap ReVamped aims to reanimate the FMV classic via Kickstarter, Won't be on Nintendo Consoles
We've been documenting one Polygon staffer's (it's me, hello) shameful addiction to FMV games, most all of which have been shelved in the dark corners of gaming history just behind the dust-covered Game.Com systems. But if one FMV game has persisted in the zeitgeist, it is Night Trap, the campy quest to save Dana Plato and a houseful of co-eds from the relentless advances of the vampiric Augers.
Now, the game's original creators have launched a $330,000 Kickstarter to remaster the game from the original source and present it in high definition on consoles and PC. If this trial is successful, the newly-formed Night Trap LLC says it wants to bring other gems from the Digital Pictures library (which includes Corpse Killer, Sewer Shark andSupreme Warrior) back to the market.
Also won't appear on Nintendo consoles for a backwards ass reason
Ever hear the term "never burn bridges?" Well, Howard Lincoln, the former president of Nintendo US, made our lives miserable during the 1994 Senate Hearings on Video Game Violence. Not only did he quietly suggest to congressman, though the use of Nintendo-supplied and heavily edited footage, that they should demonize Night Trap rather than Nintendo's Mortal Combat, but he also declared publicly that Night Trap would never appear on a Nintendo system. And he was right: as much as Nintendo desperately needs publishers to support their third-place platform, we won't be one of them. There's just too much bad blood between us and them.
This game was shit.
And he was right: as much as Nintendo desperately needs publishers to support their third-place platform, we won't be one of them.
I think these guys are kind of overestimating how much of a system-seller this could be.
Lol who the fuck is going to buy that
It was an utter failure at release and it'll be an utter failure again
Oh come on, please tell me this is a joke right?
Lol who the fuck is going to buy that

At this point the game has a cult following and is infamous, it's bound to have sales, regardless of how good it is.
Depending on how much it is ($10 or less. Preferably less), I'd buy a copy.

We actually do have the tech now to pull it off well...
The devs are mad at Nintendo for something they did 20 years ago?
I'll keep that in mind in case any of their marketing asks for a 'second chance' from gamers.
I can see some people pulling out because of this, especially since they originally took a lighthearted approach about the hearing.
At least they finally responded to the question people were asking in the kickstarter comments.
Well, Nintendo is probably devastated to hear that.

Nintendo still gets the last laugh.
[sp]Someone should edit the last one where it says IT PRINTS HD MONEY[/sp]
that they should demonize Night Trap rather than Nintendo's Mortal Combat
uhh
Wasn't Mortal Kombat also on Genesis though?

It was. The better version too, since it had blood. :v:
It was. The better version too, since it had blood. :v:
Exactly. When I read that line in the article, I was taken aback by "Nintendo's Mortal Combat". Especially since I have a copy of Mortal Kombat for my Genesis myself.
It was. The better version too, since it had blood. :v:
I thought there was a cheat for it in the SNES version.
Anyway, this is pretty stupid considering Lincoln isn't there anymore.

Actually Genesis was the one with the code. While the SNES version only had sweat instead of blood.
It honestly sounds like they have no idea what they are doing from this interview

i'm interested on how this could turn out since it's not 1986 anymore and we have better technology now then we did back then.

They don't have the rights at the moment:
Kotaku: Why $330,000? Is that actually enough to do everything—manufacture games for multiple platforms, including consoles, and sell copies at $20 a pop?
Tom Zito: It cost us $250,000 to buy the rights. So, you know, you add on development costs, manufacturing costs, and fulfillment costs, and it's more than $330,000. That was an amount of money we felt comfortable with bringing in to reduce our risk. We put in $250,000 to buy the rights. I will say part of the Kickstarter will reimburse us for the rights, but it won't make us whole.
This should be a huge red flag right here.
They don't even have the rights for the game?
Wow can't they just make a similar game with a different name? A spiritual successor? It's not like they can even cash in on the name since the game isn't even popular.
Big red flag indeed.
From the closed Facebook group, the head of PR on the project, in response to Kotaku article:
This campaign is and was not done poorly.
The rights for Night Trap were purchased many years ago.
The reason for initially wanting to offer physical copies only, was to make them more of a collectible.
This is a horrible article and I am sorry that Tom took time from answering buyers questions to speak with this publication.
Some people in the group are becoming concerned, while others are blindly believing the devs.

EDIT:
Here is another update on the kickstarter page:
Thanks again for all your support, comments and questions. Four topics for today:
1) We will have a way to offer digital downloads posted to the campaign page, if not tomorrow, certainly by Thursday. We are exploring several options and have asked a number of you for feedback. And your insights have been incredibly helpful.
2) Ditto for the ability of fans to purchase different combinations of items than the specific ones we're offering.
3) A number of you have asked questions or made comments about the rights to Night Trap. As many of you know, Night Trap was originally produced by Hasbro, the toy company. Hasbro licensed rights to Digital Pictures, which in turn had the right to sub-license those rights to others. Digital Pictures' rights (along with its sub-licensing rights) expired when the company ceased selling copies of the game. Night Trap, LLC, which is a partnership among Jim Riley, Rod Fulop, Mark Klein and Tom Zito, purchased the rights outright from Hasbro.
4) A word about Nintendo. Twenty years ago Nintendo used Night Trap as a lightening rod to attract attention away from problems of its own regarding the game Mortal Combat. Their behavior was loutish and disingenuous, and hurt everyone in the gaming business. That was a long time ago, and many things have changed since then. We bear Nintendo no ill will, and certainly bear no ill will to anyone who owns a Nintendo system. But life is short and you have to pick your targets of opportunity. We simply have no interest in paying licensing fees to a company that once tried very hard to put us out of business.
It could always be worse...

Anyone else feeling old right about now?
Looks like the devs are making "fake contributors" to support their ideology in the comments:

This is becoming a mess quickly.

Is it bad that I'm expecting them to do what the Areal devs did and go absolutely batshit insane.
Zito: It's not coming to retail. It's Kickstarter-only. For the maximum number of units as listed. [Here he was referring to the fact that each backer tier is limited to a certain number of potential buyers. After that, that number is met, they won't manufacture any more.]
Kotaku: Why only do that? Why not give people something they can download? The Kickstarter mentions you're "not certain" you can deliver on that. Why not?
Zito: The real impetus for doing this was to put the game out with a degree of video quality we haven't been able to do before. If we can't deliver a robust downloadable version of the game, we won't do it. And we won't know that until we finish doing the engineering for the disc versions.
So they don't actually plan on selling the game because they are basically saying "we're not sure consoles can't handle these graphics"

Not even PC could handle that.
I still don't get why they think reviving an old, shitty game like this is a good idea. It'll be a dumb novelty at best.
When we originally designed the game, the expectation was that it'd come over a table system. You need to have sufficient bandwith on the streaming part, and you need to have sufficient buffering on the client side to be able to do the instantaneous switching. Interestingly nobody has done a product like this on iOS or Android. We think we can, but we don't know for sure.
Why stream the game?
Phones and tablets these days can hold and run games like Bioshock and GTA San Andreas.
Night Trap used less than 700MB and ran on Sega Genesis level hardware.

because they clearly have no idea what they are doing
I wonder how many people in this thread talking shit on it have actually played it.
I wanted this to go well because I like Night Trap, but the people in charge of it are idiots. Nobody should give money to them. And the quality of the example video is better than every other version of the game, but it still isn't very good.
