Sega have registered the website domain www.dawnofwar3.com, presumably in advance of a new Space Channel 5 game announcement. OK, so it might well mean a sequel for Relic's muscular strategy game is on the cards—Company of Heroes 2 was a while ago, after all. Whois Lookup states that the domain was registered back in 2011 by Sega of America, and updated on March 26th of this year. Meanwhile, the registrant's email address appears to be that for Relic's IT department.
While Sega could just be registering the domain to protect it from squatters, a couple of years ago Relic did say that a new entry in the series was a "strong possibility". If you're wondering why you should be excited about a third Dawn of War, have a read of our retrospective of the original game.
If it has the scale of DoW1 and brings back the base building I'll be a happy camper.
I am remaining cautiously optimistic.
Loved all Dawn of war acually so i have high hopes!
I saw a thread about it a bit earlier. If it's true to either DoW1 or DoW2 then I will be freakishly happy, but it's hard to know with SEGA owning them now and all.

Agreed so much, I loved DoW1 and all of its expansions. I didn't like 2 at all, it didn't feel like an RTS to me, the base building felt like such an integral feature.

I don't think the base building is the big issue really. The problem is scale: DOW2 is so much smaller than the first game. Less units, smaller play areas, too much focus on unit abilities while you're already focusing on your micro: positioning and counters.
DOW2 was still fun, just lacked the feeling of serious warfare the first game had.
Dawn of War 2 wasn't even really an RTS, it was more like a tactical game of whack-a-mole. I'll never understand why they decided to deviate so far from Dawn of War 1.
dow2 wasn't a bad game, i think it more closely resembled tabletop gameplay (closer to kill team type game play) than DoW1. so the problem is i think, that it was a DoW game when it should have been a separate/stand alone series.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH

DoW 2 was as far from killteam as far as humanity is from world peace.

well to tell you the truth i've never played killteam. i thought it was squad based micromanagey fights between very few units
more blood! more sync kills! more units! more customisation! more base building! more resources! more war! more WAAAGH!
I love the DoW games, but I don't consider them to be "DoW" per se. But rather a tactical combat spin-off with RPG elements. The continuation of either of them is definitely wanted.

That's because it wasn't an RTS, it was an RTT. It was odd of them to change, but the game itself was pretty damn incredible, it was just hard to accept the change from DoW1. I hated it at first as well.
Relic tries to not make the same game twice. DoW 2 was smaller because they wanted to focus on a tactical level and bring out individual army focus.
Just a bunch of features that got lost in the development line due to time constraints. Originally in MP there were more buildings available. Things like deploy-able cover, forward reinforcement points for every faction, and even buildings to build more troops from. Some of those things were recycled into commander abilities.
Base building was removed because it didn't fit the theme, and according to a few things, felt out of place with 40k. Wouldn't be bad to return in a limited capacity, but also not at the level it was in DoW.
A few years ago, when some relic employee talked abut visions for DoW 3, they wanted a total war style map, DoW 2 style gameplay, but Dawn of War or larger scale. Who knows if they can actually manage that though.
If they stick with the current version of the essence engine (used for CoH 2), it's unlikely we'll see a very large scale. As it is now, the engine isn't made for a large number of units, so they'd have to do some pretty big tweaks to get more then a few dozen units on the field at a time.
And now for all of the warhammer avatars to show up, this is like our bat symbol. Hope its real, game issues aside DoW games are still a blast of fun to play even now. They always nailed the "feel" for me.

I think base building does fit with W40K, though. It's not as if they're permenant bases. It doesn't quite make sense for some of the armies but it fits in with most of them in some way.
I really hope they bring back all the unique animations and voice lines, those were some of the best things of DoW1.
To be fair, base building is half the gameplay for me, especially as a predominantly Imperial Guard player. Honestly, I'd be very happy if they went the CoH route in terms of base building with precise placement of turrets, trenches, cover and tank traps and whatnot.
It'd make sense too, some factions and space marine chapters' entire shtick is siege warfare and fortification; (see; Death korps of Krieg, Imperial Fists, Iron Warriors, etc)
DOW2 was great in the more squad focused aspect of 40k, I'd really like to see a blend of gameplay between the massive battles and base building of DOW1 and the small strike force focused combat of DOW2, but it would depend entirely on the context of the scenario. Small maps --> dow2, Massive maps -->dow1 sorta thing.

I'd assume this is pretty much what they'd go for. Take the best elements of both games and put them into one.

Its weird, in most books, DoW2 makes lore sense. But so does DoW1 with the epic battles and such so its really a bit confusing.
You know what would really kick ass though, if the army painter was of the standard of Space Marine
They both fit in-universe and just show different styles. I mean just looked at Space Marine, that had a small number of Space Marines taking on hundreds if not thousands of Orks and Chaos.

It better be bigger than Dow1

just reskin Supreme Commander

DOW2 is basically lore marine simulator.
just reskin Supreme Commander
i've been rambling for a long time that a 40k game with (almost) the scale of SupCom would be amazeballs
thousands of infantry
hundreds of tanks
dozens of superheavy vehicles
TITANS
If they can get the looks of DoW2 and the gameplay of DoW1 they'd have a perfect RTS game.
also looking forward to spamming Heavy Bolter marines again
