I'd probably lean towards the Focus, I haven't heard of any issues with it and I tend to like All/RWD better.
Big Honda guy myself, but damn what a shame the 2017 Type R has so many issues..

The Focus is still unreliable as always, the Ecoboost engine is notoriously horrible.

I really like the Ford hot hatchbacks, but Ford doesn't exactly have a stellar reputation when it comes to small car build quality. I'm not sure if it applies to the RS, but the standard Focus, Fusion, and Fiesta have transmission problems out the wazoo.

I mean aside from the bit where the engine block warps after a year or so and liquids which shouldnt mix do? Yeah, its pretty reliable apart from that (and those rear clutch packs)

RS has a not-insignificant list of really major issues.
Rear end over heats, head gasket failures, to name a few. There's more:

Cool car, if they get that sorted, I guess. I'm not big on hatches at all so I don't have a horse in the race, but still.

Plus they look like CRAP on the inside
Plus they look like CRAP on the inside
Seriously though what is it with American manufacturers and fuck all shitty interiors? My 2002 volvo v70 looks better inside with it's sun-baked and chapping leather seats / shifter with faded interior and exterior plastics than most of these cars look new. It's so painfully obvious to see where the money to make one of these things didn't go that it's a wonder anyone buys them at all.
I really wish the new civics weren't so ugly. I personally love how my 2008 Si coupe looks(aside from the paint going to shit because the PO didn't take advantage of the paint recall)
I wish he talked more about the transmission. The shifting in my car feels great and there's a consensus that Hondas have the best feeling shifts and that the S2000 has by far the best feeling shift of any car ever made. Mazda and Toyota are a distant second when it comes to shift feel and I have heard that the MX-5 feels great. I hear that Porsches require some manhandling
Worst thing about this new Civic is that the styling is just so messy. No matter which angle you look at it from, it's too complicated. Especially the rear; like why is the wing so large, and what is the point of the black pentagons on the rear bumper?

As someone with a 2017 RS, I'm going to disagree. While I haven't had issues with mine, the coolant issue is a big one. Ford is working on a fix for all RS's so...yay.
The rear end overheating "issue" is pretty overblown. The Type R was having heat issues as well when put on track. So they're both tied there.
Why did I buy the RS over a Type R, Golf R, Mustang GT? I like small cars so the Mustang was out. The Type R is a bit too "loud" styling wise. The Golf R is a VW, great but once the warranty is up then you dump it asap. Or so I've been told. That doesn't sound like a good car.
So coming from a turbo Cobalt SS I got a massive improvement on the interior and much better handling. The RS is still slower than the Cobalt in a straight line (60-130mph) for sure and the engine is bringing up a lot of questions due to the issues. But if Ford treats it like how GM did with the 2.0 LNF SS Turbo, we'll all get new engines and be done with this. The handling of the RS is surprising and a ton of fun.
The Type R is one awesome car and I'm sure it could outrun my RS on the highway. In the turns, probably not.
Huge Honda fan, thing looks pretty badass. I've owned 2 gens of the Integra, (one being RSX in america). Switched to a Ford Fiesta after my last one died and it was meeeeeeeeh. Bland, but sort of fun! Now that got totalled and I have a Mazda 3s hatchback, and boy did I miss Japanese hatches. I would have gotten this but $$$$$

Wasn't aware of said issues so thanks for the insight. It's gonna be a bit before I can ever get a new car so hopefully they'll be fixed by then as I would love to have one.

The RS is done after this year. The 2018s are the final models of the 3rd gen RS. And before anyone says "it didn't sell well", the RS has been a limited production model. Usually 2-3 years and that's it for the generation. Then you wait for the next gen Focus to near the end and and it'll be there for the last 2-3 years. Rinse repeat.
But ya, if you go for a used one then hopefully it'll have the fixed engine. I don't have any regrets with the car. Am I crazy for spending 39k on a Focus? Sure but no crazier then 39k on a Impreza (STI), Golf (R), or Lancer (Evo...RIP). Maybe next time GM and Mazda will have a hot hatch. Probably Mazda but GM is too sucked into econoboxes except for the Camaro and Corvette (plus CTSV and ATS V).

Not sure where you heard about the Fusion/Mondeo having transmission issues. It uses a standard GM-Ford 6F35 transmission. And is used in multiple GM/Ford vehicles. It has a particular quirk, namely that Ford's fluid maintenance interval is far too long and it will become prone to aggressive hard shifts going from 3-->4th if you don't change the fluid every 30-40k. But that's an annoyance, not a big issue. If anything, the Fusion is one of the best "regular cars" made domestically.
The Focus and Fiesta automatics have the crap double clutch transmission and are what you are thinking of. The manual transmission models are fine.

Recently test drove that one after doing research with current owners. I put down money to secure a March delivery date.
Bearing in mind, this is a few days after I test drove a Tesla Model S P100D as well. It's only slightly slower but a lot more fun and requires more finesse to drive well.
I drive a 2012 Honda CR-Z and currently find that to be loads of fun. The CTR GT is everything I'm looking for in a car right now!

My biggest gripe with this car. It doesn't look sleek nor clean. I doubt this will have the "timeless" look in which IMO previous Civics managed to achieve. In a few years people are gonna see this car and the first thing that goes through their mind will not be "wow that looks fast" but "wow that's just vulgar". Also not liking the fact that the last 2 generation of the Civic Type Rs have been visually the gaming mouse of hatchbacks, while every other model from the EK has been super clean with the exception of aero bits and a red badge. Which is a shame because I thought the interior looks fantastic. Had this car looked a lot more like the Civic SI (not a hatchback I knooow), I'd probably be on the waiting list already.
The Golf R is a VW, great but once the warranty is up then you dump it asap. Or so I've been told. That doesn't sound like a good car.
Golf GTIs and Golf Rs are generally not too bad, the VWs you should stay away from are literally everywhere else where they are made cheaply with cheap labour, while GTIs and Rs are still made in Germany as they should be.
I know this thread isn't about the Focus RS but christ that's BAD. How did Ford miss this?
Honestly, it happens. When you buy a new car that has a new (or newish) engine, it can skip by. The supercharged Corvette from 2 years ago? Ya that overheats. Mustang GT350 without the track package (shouldn't be a excuse)? Overheats on the track. Type R? Gets hot and can overheat. The newish Silverados have been having dumb issues with their engines from what I've heard from a dealer mechanic friend. The head gasket on the RS is another one of those things that slipped by. When you buy a new car, you are a beta tester whether you know it or not. I'm not defending only the RS but this stuff happens. Since the RS is an enthusiast car, owners get very shouty very fast and then the media eats it up.
Issues get sorted out over time. This crap goes on and on. Honestly it's nothing new but since it's an enthusiast car, it'll get blown up and ruin the public's eye of it. Kind of like the STi engines, remember cylinder 4 blowing up all the time?
Tl;Dr: Nothing new here. It happens, gets fixed/covered by warranty. Life goes on and you enjoy the car.

How is the CR-Z reliability wise?

Perfect for little boys who get wet when they hear 'VTEC', maybe. It's a very childish car. Same goes for the Focus RS, in response to people mentioning it in here.

I feel like the older NA engines gave the Honda Type Rs a lot of character, seeing them go turbo just makes me think they'll drive just like any other fwd turbo 4 that's coming out these days. I get why they went that route though; I can't imagine them making good sales with a 4 cyl sport trim and no FI due to the lack of both power and efficiency compared to everything else.

Being able to rev to 8k is really something. Revving to 4k is already loud, past 6k all the way to redline makes it sound like my car is going to explode and take out everyone near me

I didn't understand a few bits of that post but it made me cream myself, but...
The point is that most people don't want to buy an old EG hatch and do all of that to it.
