• MDMA to be taken live in the UK next week in a televised drug trial led by Professor David Nutt
26 volunteers have been recruited for the show, all of whom will take MDMA and subsequently undergo a series of clinical tests. All subjects are either given MDMA or a placebo; after an hour, readings were taken with an fMRI machine. Subjects also had their brain activity tracked when asked to recall happy or upsetting memories. Among the subjects are former Liberal Democrat MP Evan Harris, We Need To Talk About Kevin author Lional Shriver and goon-of-all-trades Keith Allen. Study leader Professor David Nutt claimed that Channel 4′s intervention has provided funds and resources which have been impossible to source from more official channels: “We have failed to get money for research from conventional sources, which is why the Channel 4 intervention is fantastic. Nearly half a million people are believed to take ecstasy or MDMA every year in the UK, but there has been very little research into what it does in the brain. These experiments will give us a much clearer picture of the fundamental effects of MDMA on the resting brain than anyone has been able to get before.” Concerns have, understandably, been raised about the possibility of the show glamorising or trivialising use of the drug. Rebutting the claims on BBC Radio 4′s The Life Scientific, Nutt has stressed that the study will be a “serious documentary on the science of MDMA’”. MDMA has been touted by some as having possible applications as a psychotherapeutic tool, particularly in relation to PTSD – claims the documentary hopes to put to the test. Drugs Live: The Ecstacy Trial will air on September 26 on Channel 4, presented by Jon Snow and Dr Christian Jessen.
Source: http://www.factmag.com/2012/09/19/keith-allen-and-lionel-shriver-to-take-mdma-in-live-televised-drug-trial-on-channel-4/
Hmmm, here's hoping that no truths get blurred out by propaganda or Conservative nonsense.
this would be a great gameshow
Hmmm, here's hoping that no truths get blurred out by propaganda or Conservative nonsense.
Indeed, well this is Channel 4 and apart from on a few occasions, it seems to maintain it's own slant Prof. David Nutt would not likely partake in this programme if it was a propagandist work, he is a man of principle as evidenced by his honesty whilst in the government committee and ever since being sacked from it
Madonna live, I can't wait
I can't wait to play 'spot the gurner'
Where do I sign up?
i thought this had already been filmed as the home office refused to let them do it live [editline]19th September 2012[/editline] might have a gurn with them
I have done many studies on swedgers with my mates. They get really hot, take off their shirts and tell me how much they love me.
What is a gurner? [editline]19th September 2012[/editline] What are swedgers?
Fifth Gear did this with marijuana and driving, it was in the Flash Videos section a while back

They should do a public information thing at some point in the programme pointing out how the death of Leah Betts was caused by water intoxication (government advice to parents and young people at the time of her death said if you suspected you had consumed ecstasy to drink as much water as possible) and used by Red Bull corporation to launch a pro-bono marketing campaign against ecstasy since it was a successful competing product (to keep you dancing all night long) at the time and this eventually, along with media hysteria and paranoia regarding the story as well as others about contaminated product, led to the banning of ecstasy. Not because it was all that dangerous in itself but that it was a competing product and was distributed by an unregulated underground market.
The media, after her death, focused on the putative fact that it was the first time she had taken the drug.[13] It arose later — though it was much less publicised — that she had taken the drug at least three times previously.[6] Her father, Paul, subsequently became a vocal public campaigner against drug abuse. He and his wife were present at the press conference at which Barry Legg MP launched his Public Entertainments Licences (Drug Misuse) Act, which allowed councils to close down licensed venues if the police "believed" controlled drugs were being used "at or near" the premises.[14]It was reported that the £1m Sorted posters campaign was the pro-bono work of three advertising companies: Booth Lockett and Makin (media buyers), Knight Leech and Delaney (advertising agency), and FFI (youth marketing consultants). Booth Lockett and Makin counted brewers Löwenbräu as one of its major clients, at a time when the alcohol industry saw increasing MDMA use as a threat to profits. The other two companies represented energy drink Red Bull, a professional relationship that had earned Knight Leech and Delaney £5 million and was described by one of FFI's executives who remarked that, "We do PR for Red Bull for example and we do a lot of clubs. It's very popular at the moment because it's a substitute for taking ecstasy."[6]

What are swedgers?
Slang for ecstasy pills.
What is a gurner? [editline]19th September 2012[/editline] What are swedgers?
Gurning is something you do when you're on specific drugs, stuff like wide eyes/grinding teeth all relates to gurning.

Ok sorry, I misunderstood/misread something somewhere either way the whole further demonising of the substance following the death of Leah Betts is interesting to read about in the context of how media and advertising can influence public attitudes and policy making negatively and present misleading data
Saw it trailed yesterday on Channel 4. I'm pretty sure Keith Allen has done drugs before.
I'm skeptic of it being done by Channel 4, after Big Fat Gypsy Wedding and all the other shit documentaries they've made
Is this part of a series or just a one off?
I'm skeptic of it being done by Channel 4, after Big Fat Gypsy Wedding and all the other shit documentaries they've made
Dispatches.
I'm skeptic of it being done by Channel 4, after Big Fat Gypsy Wedding and all the other shit documentaries they've made
Those aren't documentaries really, they are reality TV shows. I get the feeling this is more along the lines of dispatches.
are you guys sure the professor isnt a nut
haha, hopefully they'll do tests where the put all the people in the same room. ah orgies and lightshows
that's Nutts
I'm imagining a bunch of middle aged men in suits raving on a talk show. Is there going to be a live viewing of this event, and if so, where can I purchase my ticket?
I'd give my left nutt to be on this show.
