• Rescued a baby bird from my Cat, need some tips on raising a bird.

Alright, one morning I was letting my cats in from a long night outside. One of them is an orange male tabby cat (about 1 year old) and a black and white female cat (5 years old). My cats usually bring dead birds to the back porch each morning (Yeah, really nice). But this time, they brought home a baby bird, but it happened to still be alive. After chasing the cat for a bit, I managed to get the bird out of it's mouth, and placed it into a Petco box I got the Orange cat from (Ironically, he was the one who brought the bird home). I was thinking of calling it Ryan (In honour of Ryan Dunn) But my friend reminded me of the Meet the Medic Trailer, and I decided to call it Archimedes. Here are some pictures: Here is it's injured wing: My dilemma is, I cannot get the baby bird's mouth open to feed it, so I was wondering if anyone have any tips on feeding it. Thanks Facepunch! UPDATE Archimedes died last night in the early morning hours :(. Probably due to his refusal to eat, or just shock. RIP Archimedes.
Depressing as it is, it may not survive. Birds are fragile creatures with fragile hearts, and if traumatized, they may refuse to eat until their bodies shut down completely. Just a headsup. Don't be too hurt if it doesn't make it - but if it does make it, be proud of yourself!
Whoa, those are some gigantic nails.
You don't hang around many girls do you I think if you put some bird food near it it'll probably eat it but what do I know
You need to dig up earth worms, chew it up in your mouth. Then you get a yellow cone and stick it over your mouth. This way the chick will think you're the mama bird and it will open it's mouth as you slowly use your tongue to push the worm meat. Keep your teeth clenched so that the meat will be blended and grinded along with the soil creating a very pasty, and soft meal for the baby bird.
I want a bird to name Archimedes now. :saddowns: Can I buy a dove? :3 Also yeah I'd take it to the vet and see what they say.
give it to a wildlife shelter.
I rescued a robin once. I mashed up worms for it and put them in a bottle-cap and it ate on its own. It wasn't a baby but it wasn't an adult, so I dunno if it's age matters. When I released it I saw another cat catch it. :\
Looks like a mocking bird to me.
Men aren't meant to wear fake nails. Because, you know, women don't exist on the internet. No offense OP.
Haha that's not me, it's my mom holding the bird.
Feed your baby bird from your mouth or it won't eat, they like peanuts if you can't put worms into your mouth.
I found a baby pidgeon a week or two ago that hadn't even been touched by our cat, but it got close. Long story short it died the next night die to shock. Look, there's an EXTREME chance your bird is going to die within this week. You need to get it a dark, smallish place, an accessible water supply and food.
Is your mom a cougar?
Well she does know how to hold small things. :downsrim:
Was he like "thanks bro" and then flew away? Also, you need an eyedropper to feed the bird, I'm not sure how you'd get the beak open though.
I bet the bird gave the cat the bird so the cat got pissed. [sp]Doubt many people would get the pun[/sp]
If I created a thread each time my cat brought in a flying squirrel, mouse, mole, or bird I'd have 10,000 posts
Lol, flying squirrels are common were you live?
Yeah, I got pictures somewhere, I'll see if I can find them v:v:v
Nice nails.
Try not to get the bird flu

the bird is the word
When I was a kid my brother and I found some young birds that fell from their nest. It was too high up in the rafters so we couldn't put em back. What we did was we made a makeshift nest in a basket filled with straw. Then we fed the chicks cooked noodle pieces. The birds ate it all up and were fed properly piece by piece. Until.... A stray cat ate them all. Keep them away from cats.
post this shit in the dragon megathread rrerrr
And this is why I think cats should be required by law to wear a bird bell , so shit like this doesn't happen. The penalty for not having your cat wear one? $150 fine for the first offence then $500 for susequent offences. (basically the same amount you get fined if you don't pick up your dog's shit at the park)
I feel bad for eating chicken while reading this thread.

Good luck with the bird, but the injury might be so bad that it won't make it.
Should we also arrest/put down wild animals killing birds? Good luck with the bird, but the injury might be so bad that it won't make it.
A pet cat is not a wild animal. It's domesticated therefore it shouldn't have to hunt for food unless you're being lazy and not feeding him/her his cat food every day like you should be.
There are plenty of guides online, you just have to search.
I don't want to make you sad, but most of the chances are that they will not survive. My cat used to catch baby birds too, i mean, i took care of like 10 of them, but they all died.. I supposed it's just a too early stage to separate them from their mothers.
