• Prostitution booming in Silicon Valley
Startups are transforming into multi-billion companies. And the staffs are overwhelmingly male. Sex workers tell CNNMoney they have a growing clientele who have plenty of excess cash. Two recent events have raised concerns. The arrest this week of an alleged prostitute, Alix Tichelman, in connection with the death of Google executive Forrest Timothy Hayes has prostitutes worried about the impact on business. "I do worry that people are going to think that this is something that's normal and happens, but it really doesn't," said "Maxine Holloway" a high-end prostitute working in Silicon Valley. (To protect their privacy, CNNMoney agreed to use pseudonyms or the professional names of the sex workers we spoke with for this story.) Other sex workers CNNMoney spoke to expressed worry as well -- though none said they had experienced cancellations. A second issue affecting business was the shut down of a prominent website for both solicitation and screening of prostitutes and their clients. Late last month, the FBI raided and shut down MyRedbook, a website that allowed escorts to advertise their services and negotiate with clients. Women in the industry relied heavily on MyRedbook to do background checks on their clients. Sex workers would post about instances of violence or circumstances in which they felt unsafe.
http://money.cnn.com/2014/07/11/technology/silicon-valley-prostitution/index.html?hpt=hp_t2
Somehow the excess of money in startups together with the fact that most of them don't make profit in the beginning makes this look suspicious.
How are prostitution laws in US?
How are prostitution laws in US?
It varies from place to place, but it's mostly illegal.
The lack of love towards software developers is a terrible thing :(
New episode idea for the show.
On what network? HBO or IFC? Because we know the stuff people are into can get very creepy.
Well when you have that many nerds in one valley, a major spike in prostitution is bound to happen.
The lack of love towards software developers is a terrible thing :(
Not really a surprise since quite a few of them fit the stereotypical awkward nerd description.
Virgin nerds get hyped!
How are prostitution laws in US?
Illegal everywhere except Nevada iirc
More like Silicone Valley
Yeah, great job protecting people, FBI.
I feel like somebody with power or friends in FBI had a bad rep as a client on there
Time to legalize.
Shouldn't have been made illegal in the first place.
Hey babe check out my sweet new computer, wanna bang?
Enforcing laws against prostitution is going to be about as effective as the war on drugs. Let's legalize, tax and regulate.
Enforcing laws against prostitution is going to be about as effective as the war on drugs. Let's legalize, tax and regulate.
Yep. Totally agree. Otherwise you create a black market that fuels criminal organizations through illegal drugs and human trafficking.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Legalize prostitution. It protects the client and it protects the prostitutes.
I have a feeling prostitution is only illegal because of religious morals
I have a feeling prostitution is only illegal because of religious morals
Maybe in the past but these days a branch of feminists see it as objectifying and want it to stay illegal.
Maybe in the past but these days a branch of feminists see it as objectifying and want it to stay illegal.
Which is fucking stupid because prostitutes choose to be prostitutes in most cases. And why not? Fucking people is easy for many (depending on who you are, sex comes easier to some and not others) . It is a good way to make money.

But people are stupid and agenda matters more than actual safety of others.
tbh is it really choosing when its your only choice ofc it should still be legal but its not like its a liberating job
It all depends on your grade. I wouldn't say it's your only choice if you're a premium escort. If you're a 20$ back alley kind then yeah but if you earn in a week a ton more than some fast food worker, it's not all that bad. Even if it is not liberating, at least that's a way to earn cash as opposed to just going homeless which men are forced to if everything else fails.

In other words, since a man can just go down the street to get his rocks off he will be less likely to date.

They'd have to actually develop a personality to attract a man boo hoo

It should be legalized, but ideally only after everyone is guaranteed a living wage. Nobody should be forced to sell their body just to get by, that's esentially rape by coercion. When you look at the poverty rate of single mothers this argument starts holding a lot of weight.
Is that an argument against legalizing prostitution? If so, I don't see it.
It's an argument against legalizing prostitution in our current social climate, yeah. I'm all for people being allowed to choose to sell sex for money, but once people are doing it because they see no other options then it's not a choice anymore.
