http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-23374623
The prospect of reversing blindness has made a significant leap, according to scientists in the UK. An animal study in the journal Nature Biotechnology showed the part of the eye which actually detects light can be repaired using stem cells. The team at Moorfields Eye Hospital and University College London say human trials are now, for the first time, a realistic prospect. Experts described it as a "significant breakthrough" and "huge leap" forward. Photoreceptors are the cells in the retina which react to light and convert it into an electrical signal which can be sent to the brain. However, these cells can die off in some causes of blindness such as Stargardt's disease and age-related macular degeneration. There are already trials in people to use stem cells to replace the "support" cells in the eye which keep the photoreceptors alive.

They have used a new technique for building retinas in the laboratory. It was used to collect thousands of stem cells, which were primed to transform into photoreceptors, and injected them into the eyes of blind mice.
Building Retina's with stem cells. That blows my mind. How can anybody oppose this?
eye like where this is going.
watch as people freak out thinking you stick fetus juice into your eyeballs or something.
That's pretty metal regardless.
I love all the advancements we've been making lately
yay, science
Like all these awesome science findings and cures, i dont believe it till i see it.
That's pretty metal regardless.
The whole prospect of stem cells is pretty bad ass to me. "Hey babe, want to help cure my blindness?"
How about we get Deus Ex eyes?
shoulda made the title "Blindness Cure in sight"
shoulda made the title "Blindness Cure in sight"
Damn. I spent a few minutes trying to come up with a better word than "near" and couldn't. That would have been perfect. :(
My grandmother is blind right now due to radiation therapy for her brain tumor so this makes me really happy that soon other people wont have to live with this
If only this could also work for blindness associated with visual cortex damage or nerve damage.
Let's just hope this news doesn't fall into obscurity like p much every other related news.
Let's just rub stem cells on everything. We're throwing science at the wall to see what sticks.
eye like where this is going.
Can't say I didn't see that one coming.
this means people with bad eyesight can also be be helped right?
eye like where this is going.
I see what you did there
So awhile ago I found out if I don't stop doing games, computer etc. I can go blind at age 21 or 22. I really hope that's a lie though in which I think its not but I don't wanna give up doing that shit like watching tv and such.
Finally, I can play with that BB Gun with impunity!
Finally, I can play with that BB Gun with impunity!
Don't forget to attach a laser and inappropriately aim it at people's eyes!
Man I wonder what the experience would be for someone who has been blind since they were born to finally see
Building Retina's with stem cells. That blows my mind. How can anybody oppose this?
You have to use pure baby, non of that born shit
You have to use pure baby, non of that born shit
I thought you could get it from the umbilical cords and not the actual baby.
I see a bright future for this.
halting research on stem cells was a brilliant idea. conservative philosophy is legit
finally! Shooting vodka into my eye and all that eyeball licking finally isn't going to horrifically kill my eyes! :downs:
So awhile ago I found out if I don't stop doing games, computer etc. I can go blind at age 21 or 22. amazing, seeing as we are working on a way to create stem cells
