Creative Assembly to make multiple Warhammer Fantasy games
The publisher says a new "high-calibre" dev team has been established at Creative Assembly's UK studio to work alongside the existing Total War, Alien IP and mobile teams on the first Warhammer game in the deal, which is scheduled to launch "from beyond 2013".
Creative Assembly studio director Tim Heaton said: "With this year being our 25th anniversary, it seems fitting for us to embark on such a dream project with such a well-established partner.
"The incredibly rich and detailed Warhammer world is something we grew up with, and has left an indelible imprint on us as both designers and gamers."
"We'll be doing the Warhammer universe justice in a way that has never been attempted before. We're bringing those 25 years of experience and expertise in extremely high-scoring games to bear, delivering a Warhammer experience that videogamers will absolutely love."
Jon Gillard, Games Workshop's head of licensing, added: "We have enormous respect for Sega and Creative Assembly and have felt for a long time that the combination of the enormously rich setting of the Warhammer world, and their stunning development talent is a match with huge potential.
"Now that we've managed to bring these two giants of gaming together it is safe to say that some truly amazing products are going to be unleashed as a result. We are excited at the possibilities, and are enthusiastically working with the team at Creative Assembly already."
It was recently reported that the Rome 2: Total War release date has been set for October 2013, although Sega's officially announced launch window for the Creative Assembly project is simply late next year.
Financially troubled publisher THQ holds the license to make games based on Games Workshop's futuristic Warhammer 40,000 intellectual property. As part of the deal, Darksiders 2 developer Vigil Games is currently making Warhammer 40k: Dark Millenium, which is planned for release during the year ended March 31, 2014.
Hyped as fuck. Note that it's a separate dev team, but still working alongside in the UK (as in, not a separate office on the other side of the world that bears the same name).
this is the best thing I've heard this week
That litle mention of Dark Millenium is the first mention of it I've seen in a long while. Glad that's still a thing.
Oh wow, this is amazing!
What is also amazing is that if they play it right, it could have great variety between factions (and not just visual).
Mark of Chaos is the only game I know that is based upon the Fantasy setting.

Holy shit yesssss

Shadow of the Horned Rat?
Dark Omen?
Warhammer Online?
I'm excited as hell for this.
Hope we'll get some Man O' War and Dreadfleet action for the naval battles.
They better put lizardmen in it for once. Mark of Chaos didn't have lizardmen, and that pissed me off. That said, it was still a good game, but come on man! Lizards! We need them!

Damn I completely forgot about those.

That looks like a screenshot from Total Annihilation Kingdoms or am I missing something here?
I'd rather they made a 40k game so we could've had massive Titan fights.

Would not work in the total war engine

Or rather the total war play style

And we have a release date too.
A Dawn of War game with total war size battles would be awesome. Relic and creative, ASSEMBLE.

THQ still has the 40k rights. Dawn of War 3 was supposed to be like this, but we don't know if it got cancelled or not.
Speaking of this.
The warhammer fantasy mod for Medieval 2 just updated yesterday :v:

But nobody said it would be Warhammer: Total War, the play style can be different.

I know, but it would be awesome. I really want THQ to survive, just for metro, coh and w40k games.
Shame it's Fantasy and not 40k though.
If anyone can pull that off, it's CA.

40k gets plenty of attention as is. I prefer 40k too, but DoW3 and Dark Millennium (or whatever will come out of it) are enough.

From what I heard Dawn of War 3 was going to have a load of RPG elements in it, wasn't too pleased to hear personally.
This is grand news, after what's THQ is going through money problems, if they ever hit bankrubt, at least that be saved by Creative Assembly, makers of Total War. I can officially expect a total war version of Warhammer fantasy or 40K.

thought they already had on dawn of war 2 to begin with? they got stat points for your officer and 4 tree to put them in and all item drops are gain after the level is completed.
OH fuck yes!
That's some excellent news. If done right its going to be one hell of an entertaining RTS.
Skaven master-race.

They wanted to take it even further from what I heard.

so? it was fun in DoW 2
so? it was fun in DoW 2
No it wasn't. I personally disliked the RPG elements of DoW2. I felt it was too much of a break away from the original.

Plus, they removed base building. That pissed me off. I love base building mechanics. It adds a whole new level of depth to the game. There isn't just a single 'kill this' target to win it all. Many strategies can be applied.
