The middle school I go to has a Talent show at the end of every year, and I'm thinking of going in it, I can play Guitar, and for some songs sing and play guitar at the same time, I can mostly play green day, and that's about all I can play, there are a couple of problems I'm having, Everyone at my school thinks any type of music that isn't "Gangster" is gay or stupid, that's one problem, Also I have anxiety attacks and I'm not sure if I can actually go on stage, and play without getting really nervous, also what If I mess up? I'm gonna have to deal with that In high-school and ill probably get made fun of for the rest of the year, I already get made fun of enough cause everyone considers me a nerd, but I love to play guitar and I see live shows of green day, Metallica and all the bands I listen to and it makes me just want to be on stage playing my guitar, but I'm just not sure whether its worth getting made fun and put down and everything, so can someone give me some tips please?
Get full band
play disposable heros
fucking headbang like crazy while playing
get bitches
fuck bitches
profit
i think something like this is really something you work up to. A few months ago I would never play drums in front of my own mother. A few weeks ago I was showcasing my low level talent to a few of my friends. Hopefully in the summer I will play an outing that my mom goes to every year.
It's mostly all in your head too. If you don't make a big deal out of it it wont be a huge deal
if you fuck up just cover it up with improb
People are there to see something, they will enjoy it no matter what you do.
If you make a mistake, soldier on through it like nothing bad happened (In a band situation don't pull faces at each other...)
Don't give a rat's ass what others think.
Get a band together and you will feel less nervous as you share the spotlight.
Don't do it unless you can realize that all of your worries are delusions. You're making so many excuses as to why you shouldn't do it, which means you don't want to do it. You'd like to, but the risk is too great.
The first time I played live I wish I would have thought it through a little. I signed up for the talent show that day and decided I'd improvise something. I didn't have any nervous thoughts, but it was pretty evident I was pretty nervous. I had an out of body experience and watched myself try to play the guitar. Eventually I regain composure at the end and pull off some sick tapping which was probably a lot better than what I'd usually play. I got pretty good compliments for that part.
Get some benzos and take a few before you go out and play. That'll do you good.

Me and my band played Disposable Heroes live once, the drummer messed up a couple of times, but he managed to hide it. One of the keys to being a good performer, is being able to be good at hiding mistakes/flaws.
If you get afraid do what I did at the freshman talent show, mask (or in your case masks) After your show dramatic reveal, although I did it after winning an encore.
Make sure you know how to play your instrument, my first gig was on the same day I picked up bass for the first time (I didn't even play any other instrument) It's safe to say that my performance was shit.
If you're that nervous, don't do it.
Practice more until you can play songs with confidence and few mistakes. Trust me, being able to do something fluently makes you much more confident onstage.
I've found from playing in a band that you have to be confident in your abilities if you are going to play live. If you are really nervous you will probably really screw up.
thank you all for your advice, im still not sure whether im gonna go into the talent show, but Ill keep practicing and maybe as it gets close to the end of the school year Ill decide whether Ill do it.
If you're great people will love you, if you suck they won't even remember.
So go for it, you have nothing to lose!
I played live for the first time on Friday night.
It's simple. No matter how much you rehearse something will go wrong. Just don't worry about it. Mistakes are gonna be made too. Ignore them and carry on like they didn't happen. Get the crowd involved, make them work for you.
Take a laid back approach, but know your shit and play it cool if anything goes wrong.
Not doing it because of nervosity is silly. I remember my first gig. I felt sick. Even after some beer the nervousness was just overwhelming. But, as soon as you get on stage and you play the first chord of the first song, all the tension drops and you can start enjoying the show instead. Remember that!
Relax and 'don't give a freak about what them fools think.'
shine spotlights in your eyes so you can't see the crowd.
Chug like a motherfucker and halfway through one of your bands songs, go max volume and play a breakdown
[sp]But seriously, everyone has already posted what I would've said, good luck[/sp]
Just relax. It also helps to not care what anyone thinks. First few live shows with my band we made total asses out of ourselves now were pretty comfortable playing in front of bigger crowd's.
Try to invite some friends and parents beforehand and have a private show so you can get use to performing in front of people.
It also helps to insult the audience. I prefer to call them cunts. Oh and also I read that you were in middle school but If it don't bother you I prefer to take some hits of pot or have a few drinks to loosen up and put my mind at ease. Just enough to do that without effecting my playing ability.
lol that's not really a cool thing to do
last year I was at a show, and this pussy emo band was trying to get everyone to pit, and the singer was like:
"Come on you faggots! Fucking do something you pussies!"
And we're like "wut, this guy is wearing more makeup than the girl next to me, and he's calling us faggots?"
TLDR: Insulting audiences makes you look like a dick

Precisely.
Well at least for us because were a punk band.
It's kind of complicated.
Obviously for a punk band, it's okay to yell abuse because it goes with the scene, it's expected.
I don't like being called a faggot by an Oli Sykes lookalike who contains less masculinity in his entire body than I have in my index finger

Happened at a gig I was at, just local bands, and they all sucked ass. Half the crowd left and the rest just say down and listened.
The last band, and the worst, complained between songs about us sitting down. Fucking hilarious. We told them to play better music if they wanted people to mosh and whatnot.
lol, that's pretty much what happened at the show I was at
What everyone else said in this topic plus like tezzanator said - if you make a mistake, it's ok!
Take SOAD for example - they play awfully when on stage, but (from my point of view) it makes them even more awesome if they just played perfectly like robots.
Watch the whole thing, it's only 2 min long, especially 2:10

Maybe they are high at that moment, maybe it's their sound staff fault but look at their faces and movements when they do mistakes or play really bad? They are all like "Wait a minute... I don't give a fuck! :downs:"
They "broadcast" their emotions to the audience. If they would play just the same as they did in the vid but be all like standing in one spot, looking really bad and sad about what's hapenning, you would feel really ashamed of them and things like that.
protip: Playing good is still better than playing bad and don't give a fuck about it. But if you screw up, don't give a fuck about it.
Oh and don't insult anybody unless you're a world famous rock star and every one loves you.
Imagine that you're the fucking Bono and you'll be alright.
Headbanging. Lots and lots of headbanging.

Some shots of vodka might be just right since its the no tell alcohol. Not too much just enough to ease you up.
Avoid alcohol, avoid drugs. At least until you're comfortable with it sober. You don't know really know how you're going to react. THAT SAID HOWEVER, a shot of something warm and fuzzy like bourbon, scotch or even sambuca really warms up the vocal chords before a performance, as well as give you an extra boost of confidence.
It sounds cliched but once you're up on stage, just start playing your song. It goes all smooth from there. If you're confident in your tunes and in your playing then there shouldn't be a problem. If you're not confident in either, you should be putting some more practicing hours in. Once you get up on stage, it should all flow pretty easily. I don't even really worry about a lot of what I'm doing on stage, it all just kind of comes out.
Stay focused on what you practiced and know you're okay! It'll all go smoothly.
