With the new season on the horizon, contracts have been sent out to owners of current LCS teams. onGamers has obtained a section of the 2014 League of Legends Championship Series contracts sent to team owners. In the section we were provided, new regulations are stipulated for what games players can and and cannot stream. The "Sponsorship and Streaming Restricted List" states that 'the following companies and/or products are not to be advertised during or adjacent to League of Legends," during the term of the agreement (duration of the contract). onGamers has confirmed with several team representatives that the document provided is real.
Doesn't seem that weird does it? "Don't advertise our competitors while streaming our game". I get that.
Doesn't seem that weird does it? "Don't advertise our competitors while streaming our game". I get that.

onGamers has confirmed with the team representatives that LCS players are disallowed from streaming the games listed below outright, not just when adjacent to a League of Legends stream.
That's just bullshit.
That's just bullshit.
Oh, that wasn't in the OP.
And then some of the players just ignore it because they never read these things. :v:
And then some of the players just ignore it because they never read these things. :v:
It's still a bit BS that Riot is trying to limit the games that these people can stream, just to be in their tourney.
It's still a bit BS that Riot is trying to limit the games that these people can stream, just to be in their tourney.
It's not "a bit BS", it's total bullshit.
if you're going to be playing in the league championship series, you should be pretty focused on that and not off playing dota 2 anyway.
if you're going to be playing in the league championship series, you should be pretty focused on that and not off playing dota 2 anyway.
It'd actually be beneficial to play multiple games and not focus on one. If you focus on one, you would grow stressed and play worse than usual.
it's understanding that they don't want to allow sponsored league players playing dota 2 or hon, but come on, fat princess? demigod??? poker?????????? riot has pulled some shady stunts in the past but this just takes the cake. [editline]4th December 2013[/editline] also here's a fairly popular league streamer's take on things, guardsman bob. http://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/1s38ea/lcs_2014_contract_stipulates_players_cannot/cdtgg9d
Apparently I am under this too, and I do not even play in the LCS I will be removed from the list of featured streamers if I stream any of those games, and they didn't even send me the list, they just quietly removed me :( (I begged for mercy and got back on)
this is why planetary annihilation should become an e-sport once its released or stable enough for people to play it to completion...

Total bullshit. They should be able to stream whatever the fuck they want to on their own private streams.
if you're going to be playing in the league championship series, you should be pretty focused on that and not off playing dota 2 anyway.
Burnout. I get burned out playing too much Fallout. I can't imagine how bad the burnout would get for someone who's not even playing for fun, but instead just grinding away at their own skills in the same game constantly.

But regardless I think it's a pretty dick move but I don't even play LoL that much anymore so it's too much effort stressing over [editline]5th December 2013[/editline] Funny to see Rise of Immortals on the list of prohibited games, that game isn't even good and I'm not even sure if it exists anymore. [editline]5th December 2013[/editline] Here's an update on the subject from a Rioter that I forgot why he was important:
We say this all the time: we want League of Legends to be a legitimate sport. There are some cool things that come from that (salaried professional athletes, legitimate revenue streams, visas, Staples Center), but there’s also a lot of structural work that needs to be done to ensure a true professional setting. We recognize there may be some differences of opinion in the perception of pro players’ streams. In the past, pro gamers only had to worry about their personal brands when streaming and, at most, may have had to worry about not using the wrong brand of keyboard to keep their sponsor happy. Now, however, these guys are professionals contracted to a professional sports league. When they’re streaming to 50,000 fans, they’re also representing the sport itself. I can’t stress enough how these guys in the LCS are on the road to being real, legitimate athletes. This is new territory for a lot of teams (especially in esports), because the transition goes from being a group of talented individuals to being real icons of a sport and a league. Similarly, you probably wouldn’t see an NFL player promoting Arena Football or a Nike-sponsored player wearing Reebok on camera. Pro players are free to play whatever games they want – we’re simply asking them to keep in mind that, on-stream, they’re the face of competitive League of Legends.
http://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/1s38ea/lcs_2014_contract_stipulates_players_cannot/cdtp3xj
It's not that weird, actually. These guys are basically contracted "athletes" (I know, I know), and some of them have been made quite wealthy from it. If Riot's officially sponsoring the dudes by hosting this big tournament with huge cash prizes, then of course they're going to have stipulations like this. I mean, somebody sponsoring a race car driver to have him slap a big vinyl Oreo sticker on his hood would have similar wording about what else he's allowed to endorse.

I think the counterargument to being a real sport is that LoL isn't a real sport and video game culture is something different entirely. [editline]5th December 2013[/editline] I think is is a good comment on the subject of matter:
I don't think it's wise to attempt to blindly copy "real sports" all the time. In this example, the contract ignores the fact that the average day of a streaming LCS player consists of not much more than scrimming, vod reviews etc. and then, streaming. It's not like they're playing in professional leagues of your competitors. A more proper comparison would be disallowing an NFL player to play football at all. But that sounds silly as well. Because it just doesn't match. The way the esports scene works is via streams, rooting in personal streams of people just playing games. To get a following and appease the sponsors streaming is essential, merely being in LCS, even when successful, is not enough (just look at Vulcun). The fans are connected more closely to the players, they expose themselves to the public a lot more than in traditional sports. Because they are used to it, they enjoy it, because streaming has been an important source of income for so long. Just Riot as one single company contracting the pro players of its own game doesn't change the way the whole industry is set up. Your reasoning is very much understandable, it just doesn't match with reality yet. And personally, I hope it stays that way. League of Legends got big through streams of pro-gamers, not of Riot-hosted tournaments. They were funny, informative, inappropriate. They captured people's interest. Streams are the root of your success story. And you are copy-pasting contracts into this very specific subculture that just don't fit the context.
First reply to the RiotMagus post on Reddit

Most LoL streamers are in the highest brackets for matchmaking. Their queue times are up to 20 mins. Most of them stream and play Hearthstone while waiting for the next match so that they don't bore their viewers. LoL streams are now probably going to have a lot of dead air time now. Riot is just shooting themselves in the foot again.
https://twitter.com/CrsStvicious/status/408346165785001984
This guy was proven to be misinformed. [editline]5th December 2013[/editline] which of course, doesn't happen.
i They never said they couldn't play other games, just couldn't stream them
So the player can play football but not outside where people could see him
a better example would be if nike stopped sponsoring a player because he was wearing shoes from a different brand, but the stupid thing here is that it's also the same as if they stopped sponsoring him if he was casually playing a completely different sport with equipment from another brand

the logic behind this is understandable and straight forward:
Now, however, these guys are professionals contracted to a professional sports league. When they’re streaming to 50,000 fans, they’re also representing the sport itself.
extremely understandable. the only thing I think is bad about this is the amount of games - I'd have thought having only dota2 and maybe starcraft 2 on the list would be acceptable, but having stuff like WoW, monday night combat and bloody SMITE is just ridiculous

And they just seem to flat out hate blizzard for some reason. Not so sure about this, some of it makes sense but a few of them don't either. Going to be interesting to see how this goes.
Does anyone actually know how long the contract lasts? For all we know it's just for the duration of the tournaments.
Totalbiscuit's view on this:
Just do what that guy in russia did to his bank, change the terms of the agreement
