Conservative Americans Protest Enviromental Regulations in a Reasonable Way

Pickup trucks customized to spew black smoke into the air are quickly becoming the newest weapon in the culture wars.
"Coal Rollers" are diesel trucks modified with chimneys and equipment that can force extra fuel into the engine causing dark black smoke to pour out of the chimney stacks.
These modifications are not new, but as Slate's Dave Weigel pointed out on Thursday, "rolling coal" has begun to take on a political dimension with pickup drivers increasingly viewing
their smokestacks as a form of protest against environmentalists and Obama administration emissions regulations.
Last month, Vocativ noted many coal rollers focus their fumes on "nature nuffies," or people who drive hybrids, and "rice burners," or Japanese-made cars.
"The feeling around here is that everyone who drives a small car is a liberal," a roller named Ryan told Vocativ. "I rolled coal on a Prius once just because they were tailing me."
Weigel spoke to a seller of coal rolling customization equipment who described why some drivers see spewing smoke as a political protest.
"I run into a lot of people that really don’t like Obama at all," the salesperson said. "If he’s into the environment, if he’s into this or that, we’re not.
I hear a lot of that. To get a single stack on my truck—that’s my way of giving them the finger. You want clean air and a tiny carbon footprint? Well, screw you."

fuck you too, you have to share the road and blinding everybody behind you to prove a point is stupid reckless and ignorant
obama is not trying to take over america with the EPA he's just bringing us in line with the rest of the developed world for once when it comes to enviromental regulations and requirements
who care about the environmental side of it, all it means is that you don't know how to tune your diesel properly. The atomized diesel is heavier than air and falls back to the ground, and is basically just wasted energy out of the engine. The interesting thing about diesels in US is that EPA regulations regarding diesel emissions are a fair bit stricter on some exhaust elements than in europe, and is a big part of the reason why diesel passenger cars are fairly uncommon in the US.
Also, I wouldn't say redneck/"cowboy up" types = conservative.
I see a lot of them around, they're noisy as fuck too. If you're driving behind one then prepare to mess with your AC settings or you'll be choking on that smoke.
i know that there's people who oppose legislation because polluting is often more economic than not, but actually wanting pollution?
captain planet is rolling in his grave smh
i hope companies fire drivers who install these
what a bunch of greasy fucks
Ugh, fucking heretics. I could understand techno-barbarians having to cobble together smoke-belching trucks in a post-apocalyptic wasteland 'cause it's the best kind of car they could build, but this is just spite, malice and sin on more wheels than bears thinking about.
What a bunch of mature individuals.
Not to mention that the smoke reduces visibility and could potentially cause an accident, I really don't see why this practice hasn't been banned yet.
What is this, the 1800's?
I don't understand, how fucking dense do you have to be to do this? It's not about politics or the fucking Obama administration, it's about the goddamn planet.
God this pisses me off. Enough that I'd want to vandalize one of those fucking cars, I mean holy shit that's stupid.
Sometimes I fucking hate people in this country.
Why does it seem like "conservative" has become a buzzword. Just because someone is conservative doesn't mean they should be insulted or have negative connotations around them (like in articles like these).
jesus christ the comments on that site gave me a brain hemorrhage.
I've seen these. As someone with a shitty AC system in 112 F heat with that fucking thing pouring fumes into the car I would like to give a sincere Fuck You to anyone who does this.

"conservative" and "liberal" are both buzzwords in the US to some, almost acquainting to being like sports teams to even some others.
There's a benefit to this though. It makes it very easy to see if anyone in your circle of friends/acquaintances is a complete fuckwit.
What a bunch of vulgar and selfish cunts.
Normally I just ignore these things but this really fucking pisses me off. It isn't just disgusting it's a fucking hazard. It could kill someone, all because some redneck prick wants to feel like a badass. How the hell is this not banned?
I honestly would be completely behind legislation to ban diesel modifications that are specifically designed to blow smoke at other people on the road. FUCK the selfish redneck cunts that drive those shitheaps.
herp derp eat pollution libtard
Holy shit Ted Turner was right
I can tell you that my red 2007 Civic SI sedan draws a lot of attempts to roll coal over me at intersections. I'm in Indiana which is in the heart of rolling coal country. There's three trucks on my block with stacks and one even has a sticker on the back window that obscures nearly all visibility saying 'Rolling Coal'.
I have never seen it as a protest, instead it is simply idiotic young guys who like to trash their desiels and put garbage can pipes in the beds of their trucks. The same smart guys that put a "DURAMAX" sticker on their windshield that takes up literally the top half and is a hazzard.
I've even seen girls with shirts that say "Real Men Roll Coal". It's just the popular thing to do to diesel trucks right now is all. I had a guy tell me it increases his milage when he chips his truck to smoke and drives agressivly because 'It's a diesel' The same guys are probably incapable of seeing that their increased mpg from a gasser is offset by the fact that diesel here is always 50 cents a gallon more than unleaded.
I see nothing wrong with this. It sounds and looks pretty cool, like a modern steam train.
What a waste of a good truck.
I've never actually heard the term roll coal but I see these people sometimes. Usually high school kids.

Truth. Fuck the rednecks who live here. I love working on and modifying cars, and I generally love Indiana's "anything goes" policy regarding cars, but I hate that coal rolling bullshit with all my heart. It doesn't make anything about the truck better, it just makes it run super rich and smoke a lot. There is no reason at all to ruin your truck like that except the Neanderthal-like enjoyment those idiots get out of making other people cough. But, nobody will do anything, because coal-rollers are a voting block that none of the Republicans in the state legislature are willing to lose.
Here in Terre Haute Indiana we actually have the biggest annual diesel festival, and I can tell you that when all the thousands of trucks come into town the sky is literally hazed over across the entire city from their smoke.
I sincerely doubt most people who chip their trucks even vote. From my experience if it doesn't involve shit talking Powerstrokes then they don't care.
I've never seen people roll coal here in NY. I see the ocasional black smoke pouring out of there exhaust but i think it's for something else not to be a dick.
I drive a 6.1 hemi so i guess im part of the obama hate by the logic these rednecks have

You can do it with a stock diesel if you're bad at driving.
My dads 7.3L Ford Diesel could put out some smoke if you floored it, but in normal driving conditions you'd never have it happen.
I love trucks, but because they are useful and comfortable and safe. I never understood smokestacks and rolling coal though.
Diesel still burns cleaner than gas, but nice try.
