Finished - Musk's in-depth talk on establishing a permanent and self sustaining Mars colony. Livestream recording: Trailer / CGI demo:
It only now came to me how monumental it would be for the human species to migrate to another planet, during our lifetime no less!
Just in time too. After this election, Earth is the LAST place I want to be.
colonizing other planets is really the only way to insure the long term survival of the human species. Eventually Earth is gonna get hit by a planet killer or get fried by a GRB or something to that effect.
Does anyone here not know who Elon is at this point? His titles are just way too long to be in the title IMO.
I vote we just shorten his title to "Godking" "Godking Elon Musk to discuss plans for self sustaining Mars presence" just has a nice ring to it, I think.
IIRC isn't this planned to be the reveal of the Interplanetary Transport System/ BFR? That's enough to be hyped for this.
I want my Big Fucking Rocket ticket.

I cannot suggest watching this enough. It's gonna be an amazing talk.
I just want my fucking Millennium Falcon so I can cross the system in 12 parsecs. Kind of crazy to think within the next few centuries we could possibly see humanity go from nation-states on Earth to planet-states in our system.

We already got the Falcon 1, Falcon 9, and Falcon Heavy... (which are already named in reference to the MF) would a Millennium Falcon be too much?

Really looking forward to this. Hopefully by the time I turn my parents' age in the future we'll have a functional colony on the Red Planet as a result of this.

I'm curious how most of the anti-nuclear greenies will react to Musk when they discover that nuclear power will be vital to any Mars endeavour.
I'm curious how most of the anti-nuclear greenies will react to Musk when they discover that nuclear power will be vital to any Mars endeavour.
Probably the same way they do any other major nuclear project- bitching and moaning, then more uneducated fearmongering. (I've seen this firsthand, as I've got several relatives working in the US nuclear industry.) That being said, I think eventually we'll move beyond all that in the near future, and if any space mission utilizes nuclear in the short-term, it might very well be SpaceX (likely under strict stipulations from Congress/NASA, as nuclear power regulation in the US is insanely strict and complex compared to many other first-world countries).
I saved this from either Reddit or the FB group: http://livestream.com/accounts/4426843/events/6315496/player?width=640&height=360&enableInfoAndActivity=true&autoPlay=true&mute=false
Can't see SpaceX using nuclear power. That would be heavy as hell. I could see them making use of resources on the planet like Methane to run generators, and also solar, of course. They're going to need methane processors on the planet anyway to refuel their ships, and greenhouse gasses are a beneficial part of terraforming so better to get started early. Pumping the sky full of shit like we do here isn't as much of a concern on Mars.

If they can that is.

They can't burn methane for energy because of the lack of oxygen and removing it from water or various oxides is very energy intensive. Also, when you don't need a containment vessel, nuclear isn't that heavy.

I imagine that'll be a true challenge.
We need to find a way to survive the death of the universe too. Combine Style
whatever happen to the group of people volunteering a one-way trip to Mars?

Do you think with a lower gravity they could build a tether easier on mars than on earth?
The biggest issue with Mars isn't getting there but rather surviving it without it possessing a magnetosphere, even come the day we begin to have crude technology that terraforms planets we would have generations to go when it came to "fixing" it's core. I also think that it's dangerous to think about migrating world to world before repairing the one we inhabit for obvious reasons of running from problems instead of dealing with them just begets a cycle to repeat. Never the less it's an exciting time to be alive to see the stuff of science fiction begin to race towards a tangible, real possibility of future generations being able to colonise other planets for our species survival and advancement.
