I recently took a boatbuilding class at my high school and got inspired to building a canoe. I didn't have enough time to build it at school so I just cut all the pieces there and took them home. It's made of 12 foot long 1/4 inch by 3/4 inch Red Cedar strips. This will ultimately get a covering of fiberglass and epoxy for strength.

I made a simple flat bottomed canoe about 4 years ago, still don't even know if its water tight.
I will be impressed if you pull this off, I think it will be hard but also rewarding. Also I've heard cedar strip canoes sell for a good amount of money.
Goodluck, seems like quite a project.
Thank you. They are quite time consuming but not as hard to build as it appears.
Some updates:
Started stripping

A little more progress

Cutting the little buffer blocks

Wow this is insanely awesome, looking forward to your progress.
quick finish it!
I have a strange fetish for DIY stuff like this. I like to see the pictures of things being made.
Got a bit more done.

Beginning to approach the final strips (Also the hardest). I have also put the center strip on.

Started to work on the stems and prep them for the outer stem which will be cherry.

Quick question, but how much did your wood cost you, and where did you get it? The big boxmart supply centers charge an arse and a hoof for a decent slice of timber.
Isn't cedar quite expensive too?

The wood for the strips alone was about 120USD. You can find it at most lumber stores. Not big chains like Home Depot or something just local lumber yards. It's clear which means it has no defects and therefore, expensive.

It's not too bad depending on your location. The quality of it makes the difference.
$120 isn't bad at all for what you're going to get out of it, especially considering those canoes sell for several hundred at the very least. I've seen one just like this for sale at $2,000.
Looking pretty good so far. Can't wait to see the finished product!
Nearing completion of the stripping process. Fitting these pieces takes quite a bit of trial and error and more trial. I've been pretty busy lately so I haven't got to work on it as much as I'd like to. I also need to purchase a new belt sander for fitting the strips (My old one started belching smoke today).

I can see how a belt-sander belching smoke would be problematic :v:
Since the last post I have got all the strips on, removed all the nails (The ones that went into the molds making it look like Hell Raiser), sanded the entire hull down to 120 grit sandpaper, put one of the outer stems on (The thick pieces of cherry at either end) and began to shape it, and have filled many gaps and cracks with an epoxy/cedar-dust putty that I made myself. I will try to post some pictures tomorrow because the camera I was using is not with me at the moment.
this is so bad ass.
Here are the promised pictures. The color may be a little weird as the camera I have right now sucks.

The bow stem almost finished (It's cherry):

This is just some patching I needed to do in order to get a nice, even curve (I sanded too much at first ):

Once I pulled the nails, I hammered in some toothpicks to fill the leftover holes:

To help bend the stem pieces I soak them over-night (Turns the water a orange hue after a while...):

Damn, that's a nice canoe.
Are you going to use it yourself or sell it? Because canoes are pretty expensive.
I like it...
If you're going to paint it, paint it white first, and than a color of choice... that way the color will be much more flashier.
and 1 tip: PAINT FLAMES!

No, I don't think I'll paint it. Paint would hide the beauty of the wood that was so painstakingly cut. I am however going to cover it with fiberglass and resin and a final coat of varnish to make it shine and give it strength. The resin will probably make it look a lot darker too.
Are you going to use it yourself or sell it? Because canoes are pretty expensive.
I'll probably just keep it. I have a job, so no need for more money, and I want something to show for all the hours.
^^
Apparently I'm bi-winning!?
Just about ready to begin applying the first resin coat. Got both of the stems finished and faired and I'm done with all the gap/crack filling I'm going to do. I may start the first one today but I'm not sure how long to wait before the second (Fiberglass) coat. I'm going to do a little research first. Unless someone has experience with resin/fiberglass work; in which case I need some tips.

Put the first resin coat on. It's suppose to soak into the wood so the fiberglass coat can bond with it. Lots of brushing out ripples and high spots.
I sure hope I got the ratio right... 10 Pumps of resin 5 of hardener... I must be paranoid, I know I got it right! ...Right???

Beautiful
Any pictures of it staying afloat?
Threw on the fiberglass and got the first coat of resin over it. Never done this before so bare with me!

the last picture did you remove the fiberglass or did it go transparent?
the last picture did you remove the fiberglass or did it go transparent?
It becomes transparent when it's soaked with resin.
-snip, way more complicated than I thought :v:-
