We are now in the future: Google is making finger control technology.
The days of swiping a finger against a glass screen might soon seem as antiquated as dialing numbers on a rotary telephone.
If Google has its way you won't need to touch a screen at all anymore. The company's lab for advanced projects showed off new technology on Friday that lets users move their fingers in the air to control objects in the virtual world.
It's called Project Soli, and it uses radar waves to detect precise finger movements or finger "micromotions."
The result is something that looks like it's from a science-fiction movie such as Minority Report or Her, in which characters manipulated virtual objects by gracefully moving their hands or fingers in the air.
Oh goodie, now I can get used to touching thin air and having to remember which gestures do what for each seperate buttonless device.
Touchscreens already have such little tactile feedback, why do we need this? I'd rather we somehow find out how to give touchscreens that button click feeling rather then not even touching the screen.
goddamnit, i thought they had found a way to remotely control peoples fingers
Not everything Hollywood show us has to be invented.
you heard him, avoid pointing out any potential problems with the technology
This might get interesting with deaf people.
I'm a big fan of tactile feedback, but I think that with enough development this could be really neat. Touch screens have already exceeded my standards, so I'm all for new tech like this.
Couldn't you use hypersonic waves for tactile feedback?

Ever fudge with one of those art tablets for PCs? Imagine this technology being used for that, where you can hold a pencil, any pencil, and "draw" on the tablet and it picks up every change in your hand's position to make more accurate assessments about how hard you're pressing, how you're performing each stroke, etc.
Just because it makes no sense in its current implementations that they've shown doesn't mean it's useless.

Why are people complaining about technological advances for fuck sake? Who cares if you don't think there is a purpose for this technology, it's an amazing advance and concept, imagine how this could help paralysed people, who may only be able to slightly move their fingers, there's so many possibilities for this and it wont hurt us in any way to pump funding into technology

What advance? It's just a juiced up version of the power glove.

No offense but I think you need to re-watch the video and actually pay attention

By that logic we should stop exploring our seas and space, lets just stop making medicine, lets just let our people die out, why build cities? why discover new technology? You have an awful mentality
No offense but I think you need to re-watch the video and actually pay attention
You're just minifying the sensor and removing the glove.

I said not everything, I didn't say nothing.
I know I'm being pedantic but isn't like every single input device for electronics "finger control"?

Yes, but these advances could lead to much better things that we cant even think of right now, so if we dismiss them without any thought we may as well cease any advances of any kind

Miniaturisation of MP3 players and radios in Japan lead to what we know as smartphones nowadays, 10 years ago we would have never have thought we would have GPS, Telecommunication, High speed internet, Instant messaging all within the palm of our hand. All of this came from something that the West thought of as redundant, technology can lead us to amazing places. Maybe I'm just being too optimistic but I'm excited about this

And it could lead to a bunch of things we don't need. No one is dismissing this without any thought, just because you don't agree with our conclusions, doesn't mean we didn't think about the problems this stuff can have.

And now our phones keep getting bigger, which means that all that focus on making one inch phones have been wasted.
you must be fun at parties
Yes, at parties the thing I enjoy the most is arguing.

Yes, but we came from miniaturisation then we realised we wanted bigger screens, higher resolution, soon we might even have 4K smartphones if we dream hard enough.
And so what, humans consume by nature, it's in our history and our nature. There are much worse things we could be doing than making products and using plastics (Although I agree that material technology is another field which needs more funding and support to solve the problems that we face in modern society)
What advance? It's just a juiced up version of the power glove.
Now there's an idea: controlling things with your fingers via Power Glove. Put a chip in there and I'll gladly use one.

Why not? These things look tiny and if the video is any indication they are looking for people to take the technology and run with it. Lets put it in some power gloves and pair it with a VR headset, controll the environment with your fingertips, that sounds brilliant

Except they make it so you have to constantly replace your phone, which is wrong in my opinion. Phones should be becoming more modular, not creating versions that will throw everything we have in the garbage.

I'm sure there was a Nokia concept that was a modular phone, nothing to say there aren't people working on it, could be the next big thing, we will never know till it happens; and that's what I'm excited for

It'll only happen if the phone makers decide to push it, but that means cutting a lot of their profits.

what the hell does this even mean
what makes YOU an authority on what we need and what we dont need
It'll only happen if the phone makers decide to push it, but that means cutting a lot of their profits.
People are already getting bored with current smartphones, the same iteration over and over again. I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung or Nokia break the mould with something like this, it would be risky but the pay off could be amazing, which is all that matters
Touchscreens already have such little tactile feedback, why do we need this? I'd rather we somehow find out how to give touchscreens that button click feeling rather then not even touching the screen.
That is what they said about phone keyboards vs touchscreens.

I love the concept but you probably don't know the pain of accidentally grabbing a pen or pencil instead of the specially tipped tablet pen and scribbling lines all over your expensive tablet

and also not running it with a shitty '80s computer
and also the tech is completely different?
