Controversial Australian National Testing Goes Ahead
CONTROVERSIAL literacy and numeracy tests started today after teachers across Australia abandoned threats to boycott the exams.
Hundreds of thousands of students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will sit the tests over three days from today.
Federal Education Minister Julia Gillard struck a deal with the Australian Education Union (AEU) just days before the National Assessment Program, Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests were scheduled to commence.
The AEU had been threatening to boycott the tests, which inform the Labor Government's My School website.
Its members argue information on the site, which compares statistically similar schools' academic scores, leads to the naming and shaming of underperforming institutions.
However, the AEU backed away from its ban on Thursday after Ms Gillard offered to form a working party of educational experts - including unionists - to provide advice on the use of test results, and other indicators of school performance. NSW Education Minister Verity Firth said everyone will benefit from the tests.
"We always said we were determined to see the tests go ahead, and the fact they will be delivered by teachers our students know and trust is the best result all round," Ms Firth said.
"The tests provide valuable diagnostic information for teachers and allow governments to target funding to the schools that need it the most."
Well then, the tests are still going.
What's the problem with national standardized tests?
Better than the US's piecemeal system, where every state uses different tests so Mississippi can make their tests super-easy.
Who gives a flying turd. The NAPLAN means crap all, anyway. Hardly worth judging the nation's education on, and hardly worth boycotting.
This test is no different from regular tests. You do the test, look at the results, okay you did bad in this subject. Who the fuck cares? Last year when i didn't really care about "omg people can see that my school sucks!"
Also, you can buy a book from the newsagents or something, and it has information on every school in your state. The costs, the Boy/Girl ratio, etc. It also contains information on how many people go to university and how many people drop out.
Hey I just did this today
This isn't that stupid NAPLAN test is it?
I also did this today and didn't give a shit. We got another one tomorrow and then again on Thursday on maths.
.
FUCK, I couldn't complete that Essay I meant to do this afternoon because the library was full of Year 7's doing their NAPLAN tests. Now I have to sign in for an extension or do it all RIGHT NOW because I had a whole bunch of other Essays and Reports to do beforehand that were due even earlier.
It's funny, my year (2010 year 11) went through 4 years of them "testing" the stupid NAPLAN tests. Every year they moved the tests up, so we got slapped with them again.
Plus we missed out on the bloody netbooks >:(
Me too :'(
I always found them easy..
The reason people don't like the tests is because they are published on the myschool website, which ranks schools according to their marks the students get. The bad thing about the government allowing these league tables to be published is, it means that schools have to put top marks above everything else to maintain their reputation. This means cutting out "non-essential" subjects such as art and music, and only focusing on top marks in the base subjects, which isn't necessarily the right way to teach. I'm all for freedom of information, but there's a lot more to learning than simply rote learning everything to get top marks.
For questions that I didn't know I drew a penguin :v:
Myschool website is a joke. You cannot base everything on one single test.

Same here. I missed out on my fucking multimedia class to write a short ass 1 page story. Raged.
Standardised testing!?
Mon Dieu! Parents will be able to see how the selective schools shit all over the public schools.

you must have had some bad grades
Eh, what i don't understand this strange foreign schooling numbering thingy
We go to school from year 7 untill we're 18. Then we have a choice, either university or college, college is for the dumb types, while uni is for the smart ones.
