Facepunch Collaborative VII: One More Till An Octave
395 replies, posted
This is the seventh edition of the FP Album Collab. For those who are new, this is a collaborative album that is released for free. Each person or group does their own song, and the album is a collection of individual songs. Any Facepunch member is allowed to submit a song. There have been six previous albums, all of which you can check out on the Bandcamp page. The rules are pretty simple, and as long as you get your submission in on time you'll be good.
Important Information
The submission deadline is December 20th.
Anyone can get in on this.
Any number of artists want to contribute, it just means more tracks. Behold the glory of giant-ass digital releases!
No covers or remixes!
Not a lot to say really, no covers or remixes, we want original music from you. This isn't to discredit what people can do with covers and remixes, but again, we want original music.
Only one entry per person/group.
This one is self explanatory, but I'll explain it anyway. A big part of the album is to give exposure to as many artist as possible. Having an album with someone taking up half the credits would be unequal exposure. Limiting a person to one song also ensures that you send your best material in. Note that if you do a minor collaboration with someone that you can still submit a song of your own.
Only in submit music that you think is good enough.
If you have to ask someone if it is good enough to submit, it isn't good enough. If you aren't comfortable with it being the first track on the album, it isn't good enough.
There are no genre restrictions.
Feel free to send any genre song you want.
All proceeds will go to charity or Bandcamp downloads.
This is still a free album that costs the listener nothing, but since people do donate we have a plan as to what to do with that money. Since there is a limited number of free downloads on Bandcamp, when running low on free downloads the funds will be used to buy more downloads so people can continue downloading the album for free. All other money goes to a charity we decide on.
Submission Guideline
Format
Your submission must be in WAV format. This may seem annoying, but it pays off, especially when avoiding two pages of someone complaining about the inconsistency (happened with the first release). Be sure to export as WAV. Do not convert your mp3 to a WAV. Try to ensure the dynamic range is somewhat leveled.
Labeling
To make organizing easy, label your song [Facepunch Username] - [track name]
For example, if I made a song called "Easy Baby", the format would be "Pepin - Easy Baby". You want to name the very wav file this. It is also important to use your Facepunch username because otherwise there is no way for me to know who sent the song.
Where to send
Upload here http://www.sendspace.com/ and then send me the download link in a Facepunch PM. Please note that if you have it uploaded somewhere else as a wav like your Soundcloud, you don't have to upload it to Sendspace, save yourself the time and send me the Soundcloud link.
Also, with your submission provide me with a track description, the genre, and a link to where people can get to your music. Do this through a FP PM.. You can use the following template.

Song Title: Don't Stop Eating
Artist Name: The Pert
Description: This song is about a long lost boy how found out his cancer had cancer and so he decided to go out of his way to find the cure for cancer. The story came to me one night when I was looking at the water, and I realized that negative was a recursive force.
Genre: Soft Rock

You can take you description in any route you want. Try to write up at least a few sentences for the description. If you can't figure out the genre, approximate, it doesn't really matter. If your song has lyrics, please include them. This information will be used on Bandcamp and in the debut thread and in the liner notes. Also, I don't want to assume where you put your finished music. Some people may have a Soundcloud account, but they put their finished work on Bandcamp. So even if you think it should be obvious, just provide the information in the message.
Then what?
Upon receiving it I will send the PM user a message saying I got the track. If you want to send a new/revised version, you can do that, but do not send incomplete tracks.
Track Collaboration
If you have musical talent and wouldn't mind collaborating with with someone, make a post providing your skills and some examples and I'll add it here. I for example wouldn't mind collaborating with someone who can sing. Make sure that you can record whatever you advertise and in decent quality.
Available Musicians
Pepin: I can do basic riffs and rhythms with acoustic or electric guitar. I can also do a lot with lead guitar including solos. I can also play bass and piano. I'd be willing to mix something if you were really having trouble. For reference, check my soundcloud.
Album Art Ideas
The different ideas presented for the album art. Minor variations won't be put up. If you have album art idea, I suggest posting it. If we decided on the album art quick enough, the artist could also pre-make a back cover and liner notes, making it very easy to release the album on time. Keep that in mind, if we decide on your cover, be ready to come up with a back and liner notes. The resolution requirement is 1:1 and it must be at least 500x500px.

Reaching a larger audience
The whole point of this is exposure, and though Facepunch is a big audience, most people feel the need to expand. The first way to do so is by posting the album thread on other forums, preferably active forums that would take well to these types of projects. Posting it on a forum about quantum physics would be cool, but it is doubtful that it would do much for exposure. The second way to get exposure is to try to get the album on popular blogs. To ensure both processes go well, there will be a compiled list and their contacts. For example, I will post the album on Facepunch, therefore I am the contact. There only needs to be one contact per form.
There will be two Humble Bumble Game Packs rewarded to the two best referrers.

If you intend on trying to advertise somewhere, say so in the thread and give a link to where. If it is a magazine, or some alternative source, no link is needed.
FAQ
Q: How will the track order be decided?
A: The first couple of tracks will be decided by quality. The rest by random order.
Q: What is the best way to get a hold of you?
A: Through PM.
Q: Will any mastering be done?
A: Yes, I will be level balancing to ensure all the tracks are the same loudness. That is all that will be done.
Q: Does the song I submit have to be made specifically and only for the album?
A: No. If you have a song you've already made you can submit that. If you made a song for a personal album, you can submit that. Also, make sure all people who own the song consent to submitting. If you and your buddy came up with a song, and your buddy doesn't want it going on the Facepunch album, do not submit it.
Q: Is there a limitation on song length?
A: No.

Ooh awesome, looking forward to this one already!
Count me in ofcourse. =)
Finally
I'm in, motherfuckers!
Perhaps I'll finally join in on one.
Don't have a whole lot of free time though, but I'll see what I can do.
What volume are we going to use this time?
[editline]11th November 2011[/editline]
I just realized that I could annoy the living shit out of everyone by submitting a 20 minute song :v:
Since I'm doing the volume adjustment in mastering, the volume I get the track at doesn't really matter so long as it is audible and not clipping.
If I actually DO submit a 20 minute song, could it maybe be the last song? So it'd kind of be like a grand finale?
I'm in! Once again, I will try to submit some album art.
Who likes IDM?
I'm in! Once again, I will try to submit some album art.

Internet Death Metal?
If I actually DO submit a 20 minute song, could it maybe be the last song? So it'd kind of be like a grand finale?
Unless there are objections to that it would be fine.
Unless there are objections to that it would be fine.
Rocking.
Ps. The song is exactly 20:01 at the moment.
I'll do some tweaks at some spots.
Also, this is most likely going to be the last "old-school midi" song I'll be submitting for these albums, so of course I want it to be epic.
Once you start making long songs it becomes difficult to make short songs. I find myself incapable of making a 2 minute song.
Or maybe that's just me.
I still can't find a way to record with this piece of shit laptop (just kidding it's awesome I just can't record anything with it without getting this loud hissing noise) so I'm thinking about possibly submitting this song:

I just need to find my old files and apply some(see;a lot) on it I think!
Once you start making long songs it becomes difficult to make short songs. I find myself incapable of making a 2 minute song.

Just you.
Speaking of which, I'd love to have a vocalist on that track, does anyone feel like giving it a try? =)
[editline]12th November 2011[/editline]
And a hammond organ too, if anyone wants to play around with it!
[editline]12th November 2011[/editline]
I do believe the song is in C#, normal tuning.
I could play bass on people's tracks if I can get Amplitube working again. I have an envelope filter, an overdrive, an octaver and a EHX synth effect pedal, if anything like that is needed,
so you're not going to offer rewards for referrals and you're still thinking it's a good idea to have the first tracks picked by random?
so you're not going to offer rewards for referrals and you're still thinking it's a good idea to have the first tracks picked by random?
Look under the FAQ section, it says the first couple of tracks will be picked by quality, and the rest will be ordered randomly. I'm thinking the first five tracks, but that doesn't really need to be determined until later.
I would do a reward for the referral, but I wouldn't be able to offer anything of value. I'm still open to suggestions on this topic, it's just that I don't have a clue as to what would be an effective incentive besides the one I wouldn't be able to provide.
If anybody wants to offer a prize, that would be a help.
I'll offer $3 for every review, skip the quality check, just add that there is money donated to UNICEF for writing a review of the album.
I'll also offer an additional $5 to UNICEF for every referral people make, as long as they can prove that there will be views coming in from another source beyond facepunch, facebook and IMing.
Yep I'm in on this.
Editing is done now. I'll listen to the song first so I can hear if I made any mistakes and then I'll upload and submit it.
Here is my song. Plan on getting someone to do vocals, a female I believe. There is going to be more, but nothing to show off as of yet.

I do different genre than everyone else, so this may be interesting.

You really should add more 'sparkle' to the cymbal before adding the vocals, I think the snare needs more flare too, preferably making it less muddy that it is now. I think that could be achieved by boosting the mid / lower highs, I also think that it could do with a slight hint of reverb too so that it seems less computer.
The bass drum sound great, it could do with some defining however ; make the higher lows (almost mid) frequencies higher so that there is more punch to it and you're golden there. The bass guitar definietly needs to be boosted, it's barely existant.
Piano (and synth) needs reverb, adding reverb (just small doses, or hell even some delay if you're not a fan of reverb) can do a lot to give it more depth. The piano needs more sparkle too, the clarity of piano is what makes it such an amazing instrument and it's such a shame that it has to hide in this mix, when it could be adding another layer to it. Synth, I'm not sure, but stands out too much, making it lie alongside the piano instead of having it on top could perhaps work.
Whenever you get the vocalist, I think the synth should lie slightly below piano and have it be an instrument that you sort of have to look for, but still audible enough so that it adds depth to the song.
I'd actually love to mix this song too if you wouldn't mind, I just love the melody and everything in it. You've really grown a lot as a musician Pepin, this is probably even more beatiful than Painted Outside. =)

Trust me, there will be a LOT of electronic music on the album.
Awesome :D
