Arizona’s medical marijuana ballot proposition is still too close to call, supporters of the measure say.
As of early today, the citizen initiative that would decriminalize marijuana for medical use, was trailing by 6,869 votes statewide.
But there are still thousands of ballots to be counted and proponents of the measure, which was numbered Prop. 203 on the election ballot, are still hopeful for a win.
“We’re still only at 43 percent voter turnout, and the prediction was much higher than that. There are a lot of ballots floating around. We should know by late afternoon how many,” 203 campaign leader Andrew Myers said this morning. “This could easily swing the election. It’s still a legitimate toss-up. There’s reason for us to be hopeful.”
The measure does appear to be a clear winner in Pima County, where it captured 60 percent of the votes counted so far.
“Pima County voters are very thoughtful voters and this is an issue they understood,” Myers said. “Pima County had a clearer picture of what this was about.”
Proposition 203 — the Medical Marijuana Act — was consistently ahead in polling. And Arizonans have twice passed similar measures, only to have them overturned.
But 203 opponents from Keep Arizona Drug Free say the initiative was poorly written and merely a way to allow recreational drug use. Keep Arizona Drug Free leader Carolyn Short said late Tuesday that her grassroots group was thrilled with the outcome because they had been working against a well-funded campaign and it was difficult to get the word out. Her group’s message was simple — that marijuana would be fine for medical use, but that this initiative would not achieve that. Rather, it would put marijuana in the wrong hands and add to crime and drug abuse problems in Arizona.
Supporters say marijuana reduces pain for people suffering from debilitating illness and does not have the harsh side effects of narcotics. It will save patients who choose to seek such relief from having to deal with illegal sellers by making it available at about 120 regulated, non-profit dispensaries statewide. Or if the cardholders live more than 25 miles from a dispensary, they can grow their own or designate a caregiver to do it for them.
Rather than a prescription, to obtain marijuana anyone over the age of 18 with one of the qualifying conditions must instead receive a written "certification" from a doctor, naturopath or homeopath qualifying them for a card from the Arizona Department of Health Services that lets them legally buy 2.5 ounces of marijuana every 14 days.
ADHS would regulate the marijuana.
A qualifying patient is someone who has cancer; glaucoma; HIV/AIDS; Hepatitis C; amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; Crohn’s disease; and agitation of Alzheimer’s disease.
Patients with any chronic condition that produces cachexia or wasting; severe and chronic pain; severe nausea; seizures; severe, persistent muscle spasms would also qualify.
:colbert:
It only won by half a percent(4000'ish votes) is the main reason.

Border states. Get stuff legal there first, and more states will follow.
It's already too late, I'm getting bored of marijuana.

Red neck conservatives like to get high too.
Arizona, the state of many contradictions.
Never expected this from the same conservative state that McCain represented and that was so harsh on immigration. It passed here, but not in California..I think there's something fundamentally wrong there.
Red neck conservatives like to get high too.
There aren't red necks here. There are only Mexicans, and white people. Being a native, I would know.
Progress?
Arizona is the most bipolar state ever.
It flickers from a forward-thinking and seemingly nice place to live to a drug-ridden hellhole with more racist and politically stupid politicians than most southern states in the 60's
I'm not saying this event is bad, it's actually really good. The more states legalize medical marijuana the more exposure it gets, maybe now we can cut though the crap thats been built up over the years.
the law is for medical marijuana, california has had that for 10 years.
Right, my mistake.

Ahem...There's Mexicans, whites, and indians.
Is it only California and Arizona that let medical marijuanna be legal?

I heard marijuana was created from the remains of aborted babies.

It's so people will actually have a reason to go there.
