Now with 30% higher bass! Not hip-hop, but rap (cause when you say hip-hop people expect some Immortal Technique shit, and RAGE if it's not). http://soundcloud.com/the-blacksmiths/slaughtermansion We produce for rappers, so the song is laid out in a manner that would allow for vocals. So if you think of it as sparse, that's a good thing.
There are some things I really like about it and there are things that kind of bother me, yet I can't put my finger on it. I think the whole beat sounds kind of "flat" if that makes sense. Whoever produced the beat has some very good writing abilities about them, but for some reason I still get a somewhat amateurish vibe from the beat. I don't think it is necessarily the writing, but the mix. This is just me coming from a listener stance, I don't really know anything about mixing, but to me the whole beat just sounds flat. Not bad, flat. This is me being very critical, but if you want to succeed in this industry, you may appreciate it. Overall, you are ahead of many producers, but at the same time, you have a lot to learn and there are many producers who are better. Keep up the hardwork, overall I enjoyed the beat, as it was different. Nice use of the timpani by the way. [editline]28th November 2011[/editline] What are yalls influences as far as producers go?
The "flat" comment, I really agree with. I was honestly feeling like throwing a small amount of reverb on the master. The mix is clean, imo, but the "flat" thing is true. In terms of influences, we don't have any directly. Mostly because our favorite producers are HEAVY hip-hop like Jazzy Jeff, Premier, Hi-Tek. I sample on my solo stuff a LOT, but our team produced stuff, we like to spend more than just the 30 minutes most sampled beats take. We're actively producing for a lot of rappers right now, but we're always growing, which is good. We have yet to plateau, mostly because of how diverse our sound can go. I appreciate your input and comments.
The clap has an annoying release tail, other than that it's pretty good. I agree with it being a little flat, but it would be pretty great with vocals.
The trail is intentional. Two different reverbs on three different snares+claps. One of the reverbs is intentionally delayed. Not saying you have to like the claps, just saying it's intentional, lol.

It still is quite annoying, since the clap loses it's snappiness kinda.
