The executive order, titled Revised List of Quarantinable Communicable Diseases, amends executive order 13295, passed by George W. Bush in April 2003, which allows for the, “apprehension, detention, or conditional release of individuals to prevent the introduction, transmission, or spread of suspected communicable diseases.”
The amendment signed by Obama replaces subsection (b) of the original Bush executive order which referred only to SARS. Obama’s amendment allows for the detention of Americans who display,
“Severe acute respiratory syndromes, which are diseases that are associated with fever and signs and symptoms of pneumonia or other respiratory illness, are capable of being transmitted from person to person, and that either are causing, or have the potential to cause, a pandemic, or, upon infection, are highly likely to cause mortality or serious morbidity if not properly controlled.”
I guess I'll have to avoid the well being police now

"Coughing"
sensationalist as fuck
They aren't talking about a tiny bit of phlegm, they're talking about serious conditions..
Can Obama go a day without being denigrated for the sake of it.

No, he can't.
Anti-vaxxers vs police will be interesting

So then you can die in even a dirtier shit hole.

If you had ebola, do you think it would be a good idea to go out to lunch and cough on your waiter? Signing stuff like this into law is a blatant waive of freedom. Who's to say your cold doesn't look "serious" to some detectives? It's a small trade-off for security, it's true, but there you have it. It's the little things.
Also this isn't about Obama. Whoever signs the shit is basically irrelevant. No sensible person thinks Obama is the anti-christ, but then again if you think he's a martyr or something, you're dead wrong too. Look past all that distraction and you'll still be scratching your head over the legislation explicitly stating something like what this article is about.
So what, does this mean we can't choke on anything around the police now? (recovering from that usually involves coughing)

That quickly looses all credibility since Global Research is one of those conspiracy sites.

Only if you choking on something could potentially cause a pandemic?

Meanwhile in another part of the world, Madagaskar closed off all of its ports
When I cough in public I put my fist in front of my mouth all the time and when I sneeze, I sneeze INTO my shirt to not spread germs. Aren't people taught these things in Elementary School? Come on.
Minus the sneezing thing, that's my own thing. I hate when people spread germs and I get sick, I'd hate to do it to someone else.

You're going to spread more germs that way than just couching or sneezing into the air where no one is at. The germs are staying on your hand and shirt and that way you're spreading them to anyone you come in contact with.
Alex Jones and his gang have been overblowing the fuck out of this. I'm not a fan of Obama, but he actually did something good with this. It needed to be updated, and now it has been. You won't be held against your will for simply coughing...

Of course they are, GOP cant wait to twist this into some police state stuff.

Only a Muslim and a Socialist would think that its the governments responsibility to limit the spread of disease.
Sounds like somebody dug this up to capitalize on the Ebola scare. Nevermind that Bush signed the exact same order for dealing with SARS, even though that was a giant overblown scare too.
Besides, we need the government to be able to detain and quarantine people in the event of another 1918 flu pandemic. Nobody is being jailed for "coughing". It sucks from a civil liberties standpoint, but the alternative could be millions of people dying because conspiracy-minded idiots try to run away from the doctors.

I'm not saying these powers would have made the difference in that pandemic, but this is an example of where they would be used. When something is capable of killing 3-5% of the entire population, the government needs the ability to apprehend people for quarantine and treatment.

As someone who used to be a full blown conservative I can agree with this. Even if Bush totally did the original executive order. Problem though it isn't just the GOP parroting this as a police state move, some of my fellow Libertarians keep buying into this shit... and then they wonder why we can't get elected...

I don't come into contact with people. What do you think I do? Rub myself on folks all the time? I keep a bottle of hand sanitizer in my pocket at all times too.

I agree that bringing something like this up during the ebola scare makes it much more poignant, and I agree that nobody will be jailed for coughing. But something like this still erodes civil liberties. It gives the government/police the benefit of the doubt in the judicial system, leaving it open for abuse. If it really came down it and a quarantine was required to keep a disease from spreading, something like marshal law would go into effect anyway. My point is, we'd have much more to worry about than people being sick in public.
Of course they are, GOP cant wait to twist this into some police state stuff.
Listen, I don't agree with Alex Jones/conspiracy police state stuff. But kicking around these ideas is just as misguided as what they say. Arguing against the government on something like this doesn't automatically make you a gun nut GOP against the police state Obama hater homophobic bigot. There are much more moderates in both camps. Asking questions isn't a bad thing.
