Thursday night's The Game Awards ceremony included two awards given to Konami for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and one of those was accepted by voice actor Kiefer Sutherland on series creator Hideo Kojima's behalf. Viewers might have assumed Kojima didn't attend the show because of international travel, or because of sour grapes over things like having his name removed from the game's box, but host Geoff Keighley went to unusual lengths to explain exactly why Kojima wasn't in the house—and to shame Konami in the process.
"Mr. Kojima had every intention of being here with us tonight, but unfortunately he was informed by a lawyer representing Konami, just recently, that he would not be allowed to travel to tonight's awards ceremony to accept any awards," Keighley told the award ceremony's crowd. They responded with boos as Keighley continued: "He's still under an employment contract, and it's disappointing. It's inconceivable to me that an artist like Hideo would not be allowed to come here and celebrate with his peers, his fellow teammates, for such an incredible game as MGS 5. That's the situation we're in."
Didn't expect something like this from Keighley.
I'm not too surprised Geoff Keighley actually announced this. In his interviews he does show a clear passion for video games, abit he is misguided in that he wants to make it as mainstream/behemoth as the movie industry.
Besides, what does he have to lose by announcing this? Nobody is going to side with the shit-stain that is Konami right now.
I'm not to surprised. He's said he and Kojima are good friends before.

Why is trying to make the gaming industry as big as the film industry being misguided? It's commendable imho.

Fact of the matter is that gaming already is as big as movies. Jurassic World earned $209 million in its opening weekend and grossed $652 million. Fallout 4 earned $750 million in its first day.
can't wait for Konami's response

"He was too busy with his vacation to show up."
I'm amazed that a Video Game company got ousted at an awards event for video games. You never hear stuff like that but since Konami is trying to run a smear campaign on themselves they 100% deserve it.

Because then you get the extreme like this that he brings into the industry;

Konami has backed out of video game development and the western market. What do they have to lose by talking bad about them now? They're not going to lose any future news coverage or access to exclusive sneak peaks.
My fucking friend is there and got a photo with Troy Baker. He's partying with him right now

I'm sure he is behind pepsico shoehorning itself into the video game industry

That interview wasn't bad at all.
The sooner Konami crashes and burns, the better imho.

Nah, Tudd literally just searched "Geoff Keighley Doritos and Dew" into youtube and pasted the first result in an attempt at "huehue doritos pope" meme pandering.
he did have a few year stint where he shilled out

in the end it turns out everyone was corrupt, and only keighley was upfront with it lol

Except that is Keighley off-camera.
He's the Ryan Seacrest of gaming journalism.
(For those unaware, the reason the Cardashians are promoted 24/7/366 on E! is Seacrest owns their show and owns a stake in E! news)
Nothing of value lost, VGA was such a shitshow.
Illuminati

the only pics and videos I ever see that have Geoff with an actual look of happiness, or even life, behind his eyes are the ones where he's hanging out with Kojima
truly Geoff is the Miller to Hideo's Boss

I mean it is funny, but I actually watch alot of Geoff Keighley and still believe he has misguidedly affected/influenced turning the video game industry into the schlocky mess of marketing, sketchy journalism, and bad consumer practices we see today. If you watch the interview he makes it quite clear some of these things are his intentions in a indirect way (Episodic content, company tie-ins, purchasable boosts).
Ofcourse it seems you rather take what I say at first impression, which is ironic considering your accusing me of just posting a meme for a sake of a meme. You ever think some people actually didn't like the content of what he said?
Geoff is a nice guy and truly loves game, but he is a huge proponent of some of the questionable practices now seen in the industry.
Konami are still being a bunch of cunts, what a surprise.
Didn't expect something like this from Keighley.
For all we make fun of him as the "Doritos Pope", Keighley actually seems pretty legit; especially in recent years with how he's handled his own award show post-Spike.
It's not so much about the whole Doritos Pope thing, more that I wouldn't have expected him to essentially burn a bridge with a AAA developer, whether they're focusing on pachinko machines or not.
Fortunately the show was garbage and really only worth watching for the "cringe".
Its really surprising how low Konami will go to spite him. Can't they just move on and just go in peace with their Pachinko machines?
I still want to know what the fuck happened between Kojima and Konami.
