There's nearly always a project in progress, there are always people who feel the sharp end of the deal. Sometimes, the residual fallout means bitterness, recriminations and legal implications. It's rare for the process of dissolution not to marr the memories of the work done by the studio. So it was with GSC Gameworld, developer of the STALKER and Cossacks series. When that studio imploded in 2010, having already endured rocky treatment from publishers and fans after the release of Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat, things rapidly got messy. Several parties laid claim to both the STALKER IP and many of the assets which were currently in production at GSC. As Vostok Games, 4A and West Games rose from the ashes of GSC, things got a little murky, with various claims to IP rights and provenence being raised. Now, GSC is back, and looking to start afresh. We spoke to Valentine Yeltyshev, part of the original GSC team and spokesperson for the studio's return, about what happened, why and what's next.
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2014-12-10-its-a-hard-time-for-ukraine-but-a-good-time-to-be-a-proud-ukrainian [editline]21st December 2014[/editline] Snippet about West Games and Areal
"I don't really know enough about them, but the story is quite funny. These guys were basically promoting themselves as being the STALKER team, that they were working on STALKER, but that's not true. When we were working on STALKER 2, we were also planning on releasing a browser game based on STALKER so we could keep the audience engaged until released. "That project was never finished. There were mistakes. But the guys at West Games, that was the STALKER project they were working on - a flash game. So when they promoted themselves as having worked on STALKER, I was quite surprised. We would definitely win the legal action against them, but we won't start it. They used a lot of the ideas from STALKER... I don't know what they were thinking, starting that. I haven't heard from them for quite a while
[editline]21st December 2014[/editline] New game in the works
You've got a new, unannounced game in the works. The market is very different to what it was four years ago, have you been tempted to change with it and try free-to-play or mobile development? "We're pretty sure about our fans. The market we're in is quite old fashioned, they're not 16 year olds, they're 25-40 years old. We don't think free-to-play is the right model for the game we want to make. So we're making an old-fashioned, full price game, we think our audience will be happy about that. We're expecting a lot of our old audience!"
Godamn, they came out swinging from the corner
OH my GOD
Think it's STALKER 2?
Russia Simulator 4.0 here we come. Now with more historically accurate bloodsuckers.
Welcome back, Stalker!
I wonder if it will be STALKER 2
Didn't most of the STALKER team turn into Vostok games? Are they back in GSC now or what?
It's not gonna be the same without the old team if they do Stalker 2. There were very specific and very creative people on that team that managed to make Stalker the way it was. [editline]21st December 2014[/editline]
Didn't most of the STALKER team turn into Vostok games? Are they back in GSC now or what?
Vostok are still on their own. If they had got the old team back there would have been a lot more freaking out from everyone.
Didn't most of the STALKER team turn into Vostok games? Are they back in GSC now or what?
They're working on Survarium and they're basically going to be releasing a online freeplay mode similar to STALKER with a really similar atmosphere to STALKER.
Can you survive and fulfill your mission among the other adventurers, when everyone is for himself? Unpredictable struggle for survival among the dead areas and cities. Plunge into virtual reality where you're not alone. Travel and perform tasks on a large map, alone or with allies.
Right now, they have a closed beta with the PvP rule set. The free play mode is releasing in 2015
Fuck I might have to call an ambulance my hype can't take it. But hey I am happy they know their market and GSC was always pretty close to the fans anyway, especially in regards to stalker, through thick and thin, bugs and leaks they stuck by them.

Who cares if it leaked? I want to buy it, especially if it's polished. inb4 GSC, polished, pick one. (User was banned for this post ("Meme reply" - Craptasket))
What's with the other stalker 2 replica few weeks ago?
What's with the other stalker 2 replica few weeks ago?
The article mentions it.
I'm going to cry if there's no Stalker 2
The way they talk about their audience and wanting to appeal to them, it's hard to imagine it's anything less than Stalker 2. But I don't want to get hyped so I'll expect the worst. There's not even any guarantee it's gonna be any good with a lot of the team leaving over the pseudo closure.
But the guys at West Games, that was the STALKER project they were working on - a flash game
pfffhahahah I knew those Areal people were probably bullshitting about having worked on STALKER, but this is somehow even better
Cool even the article has been a subject of time space anomaly:
I never lost hope for Stalker 2 and this is sure as shit a good sign.
Cool even the article has been a subject of time space anomaly:
Strange things happen in the zone.
Maybe it's actually the release date
Fuck Sergei.
I really love the last part of this news. GSC one of the very, very few devs keeping it real. I mean, who else is there other than GSC and maybe CD Project Red?
Fuck Sergei.
What did Sergei do?
Now if only they actually make a new stalker game, then it will be the best thing ever. Not that I don't want to see other games by GSC, but Stalker 2 should be top priority
What did Sergei do?
Walked in, shut the studio down with no warning, sat on the STALKER IP for years.
Walked in, shut the studio down with no warning, sat on the STALKER IP for years.
and he did that on the day that they were showing a WIP trailer for stalker 2 and everybody was all excited for it. and then he was just like "no i'm closing GSC pack your desks" and everybody just went back to their stations and stared into space for like an hour
