Abbott to spend AUS$3b attempting to revive the rotting corpse known as the Australian car industry
The Abbott Government will reinstate nearly $1 billion in funding for the car industry, and says debate about whether the sector needs taxpayer funding is now "all history".
The decision is the latest move to cast aside several contentious policies, dubbed "barnacles" by Prime Minister Tony Abbott.
The Coalition had planned to cut the funding, following announcements from Holden, Ford and Toyota that they would wind up car manufacturing in Australia in the next few years.
The Aussie car industry has only survived the last two decades because the government pumped billions upon billions into it. It should have bee slowly weaned off a decade ago.

Why did I write $3b in the title?
I thought the only good thing to come out of it was the Holden?
Going to come across as heartless here but he really shouldn't.
The industry is never going to recover to what it was.

Not with China pumping out cheap cars.
Austrailia had a car industry?!

Who do you think made the Chevrolet SS?

There's always gonna be mining families who'll happily buy a brand new Aussie™ Commodore for all seven of their kids

What cars on our roads are even built in China aside from Great Walls? The issue is that the domestic market is just insanely competitive. We have the three manufacturers here and their subsidiaries, then we get pretty much everything from all over Asia and a heap of European models on top. I think even some American makes like from Dodge are coming over here too.
The only way domestic manufacturing would be viable here would be to focus on niche products targeted at an international market. Even then, manufacturing would probably have to be scaled back plenty.
Interesting. Hockey is openly against welfare and believes "creating an imperative" using fear and poverty is the key to a stronger economy. But shelling out hundreds of millions for an unsustainable industry is fine...somehow.
2017 elections will be interesting. I really struggle to see LNP ever getting back in power, someone's going to have to take their place when they drop.

Chevrolet..?
Speaking of which, I still haven't heard anything new from Joss.
The car manufacturing industry is dead in Australia, now Abbott is just repeating labor's mistakes.

Holden. It's a rebadged Commodore.

Yeah, they made ridiculous Supercharged V8 utes and nothing else of note.

Pretty sure most of the manufacturers are moving up to China (or at the very least Asia) and have been for a long time.
I thought Holden was moving to China.

Chevrolet.
Yeah, yeah, it was made for a different market, but in the end it was decided on by the bigwigs in Detroit. And then later on imported back over here under a new badge.

Last I heard, GM was giving Holden the axe.

Holden will cease manufacturing here in 2017 but the badge will live on as the GM badge for the Australian market. HSV will stay I think, but they don't exactly build their models from scratch but use existing models as a base for their own.

It doesn't matter because the design and manufacturing was done in Australia. As far as anyone's concerned, it's made in Australia. Just like the last generation Pontiac GTO, Pontiac G8 and the Vauxhall VXR8.
