Death sentence, calling it.
Death sentence, calling it.
Depends, they've had a single death sentence in the last 15 years, its still pretty likely though
I don't think he'll be sentenced today? We're just going to find out whether the verdict is guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity.
Apparently there are 165 charges against him and it will taken around an hour to read out all the verdicts.

Awesome!
Glad he was found guilty (i mean it was pretty damn obvious), but not happy for the Death Penalty.
Always wonder how things like this can take 3 years

A fuck ton of pieces to investigate. There was a murder in my neighborhood where the maintenance guy killed the leasing manager and it took two years to sentence him.

Details are amazing, you can take an incident that lasted less than 5 minutes and pick it apart for eternity. It's just for something that's going to put someone away forever, going through all the charges is just a legality thing and not a convenience thing. Not to mention you want to get the trial done right with no mistakes, that's meticulous all on its own.

The legal system is full of bullshit and paperwork. My grandparents' estate and wills took like three years for my mom and uncles to sort out

He's eligible for it, he hasn't been sentenced yet.

Guess they wanna cut down on appeals maybe, so they just go through every crevasse?
He's eligible for it, he hasn't been sentenced yet.
I don't think anyone should be eligible for the Death Penalty; which is why I'm still not happy about it even being on the table at all.
Maybe they'll do that laughing gas thing on him. If it works and he doesn't suffer, the last laugh won't be on him still will it?
Isn't it more expensive to do the death penalty than life in prison?

NO2 is the only humane way to execute if you're going to execute anyone
no such thing as a humane execution
no such thing as a humane execution
Oh well. If he's going to complain that it's not a "humane execution" or try to fight the sentence then maybe he shouldn't have killed twelve people.
Isn't it more expensive to do the death penalty than life in prison?
It costs more per year to hold a death penalty inmate, but I'd imagine that it would be less expensive than life in prison, depending on how long they sit on death row.
sorry but i don't think death should be a penalty for any crime. i'm not gonna argue about expenses or whether he deserves to have his life taken because he took a life w/e dumb stuff but to me morally it feels like the wrong thing to do
It costs more per year to hold a death penalty inmate, but I'd imagine that it would be less expensive than life in prison, depending on how long they sit on death row.
Very interesting. I've always heard the counterargument that executions are more expensive overall than a life sentencing, but now you have me thinking over the validity and raw numbers on it.
If anyone has any resources they could share to straight up confirm or deny, I think it'd be appreciated. I really don't understand how an execution can cost more if it's done in a timely manner. I am aware that there are people waiting on death row who have been there for many years, but this is just the error of our system. I'm curious to know that, on an execution carried out in a reasonable time frame, what's the raw math and logic?
Isn't it more expensive to do the death penalty than life in prison?
No. This is actually a commonly-repeated myth based off data that fails to accout for prison conditions and associated costs, medical costs, security costs, and late-life geriatric care, not to mention individual cases and how long a prisoner sentenced to life might continue to live for.
It's really just simple math. Cumulatively, it's going to cost more to imprison someone for 50 years in a LWOP sentence than someone on death row for 6 years or so. LWOP cases change; the circumstances of imprisonment don't stay static, and those associated changes become quite expensive. Death penalty prisoners rarely languish for much longer than a few years; some go the legal blocking route and manage to delay their executions 15 years or so.
Not that money should factor into this decision anyway. Which is why I'm still in favor of the death penalty in cases like this where the circumstances are so especially cruel and brutal against the victims who died and were injured, and where guilt is unquestionable.
He did it. We know he did it. He's eligible for execution. Execute him. Do the same with Dzhokar Tsarnaev. Hopefully, this plays out like McVeigh's execution and we expedite the process. Media coverage of this case will certainly have helped there, because it helped to inform the public of the gruesome details of the shooting.
The only cases in which I'd support a death penalty are those in which a prisoner somehow manages to escape a maximum-security life sentence on repeated occasions. In that case it's because no earthly prison can withhold them and they are still therefore a threat to society, which imprisonment is supposed to prevent. So what I mean is to use the death penalty when there are literally no other options left.
I thought the logic behind why it costs more, is because of the legal fees that go behind putting someone to death usually amounts to more then putting them in jail for life.
