[release]As you've undoubtedly heard, some of EA's games have been retracted from Valve's digital distribution platform. When Crysis 2 first disappeared from Steam in June, gamers immediately assumed that the decision was part of an overarching strategy to force users into purchasing titles through Origin. EA quickly responded to that speculation by noting that it didn't necessarily want to remove Crysis 2 from Steam, and that it mostly boiled down to conflicting terms over serving game patches and downloadable content.
The controversy continued last month when Dragon Age II disappeared from Valve's storefront coinciding with the launch of the Dragon Age II: Legacy add-on content, and EA maintained the same story: Valve's business terms were too "restrictive." Along yanking those titles from Steam, some of EA's upcoming titles will be Origin exclusives, including Star Wars: The Old Republic, while Battlefield 3 will use EA's platform no matter where you buy it. Surprisingly, Valve has been pretty quiet about the feud -- until this week.
Speaking with Develop magazine, Valve boss Gabe Newell explained that matters were complicated. "I don't think Valve can pick just one thing and think that the issue would go away if we fixed that," he said, noting that it was Valve's responsibility to prove that EA stands to gain by having its games on Steam. "We have to prove we are creating value on an ongoing basis, whether it's to EA or Ubisoft or whoever. We want EA's games on Steam and we have to show them that's a smart thing to do," Newell continued.
"I think at the end of the day we're going to prove to EA they have happier customers, a higher quality service, and will make more money if they have their titles on Steam. It's our duty to demonstrate that to them. We don't have a natural right to publish their games." Many believe that EA is sacrificing a large, Steam-loyal audience by omitting games like Battlefield 3 from Valve's platform. In that particular case, players who refuse to use Origin will have immediate access to the primary competition, Modern Warfare 3.[/release]
Agree with Gabe 100%.. I still don't know if I want to get Origin. I hate how EA is forcing crap down my throat! (and onto my PC)

I'm late? This article was published today?
what is the problem with Origin? people don't bitch about having to install Steam for a Steamworks game, and Origin isn't even a DRM so you can just install it and never use it again
Valve Fanboys. That's what the problem is.
So your a Origin fanboy...makes complete sense.

Actually for upcoming PC EA titles, you have to have origin to play the games, it has to be running to play the game. If it wasn't like that it wouldn't be an issue for most people, but having origin running and steam running at the same time is going to be BS.
Misquoted the wrong person, damnit
I don't see the big problem. It's a slightly selfish concept, in my opinion, as there's already what many are considering the perfect system out there and this just takes a little of its edge away.

Origin is required to launch Battlefield 3. Meaning, yes you do have to use it.

Because I have everything on Steam. Friends, store, my games.
Why should I install another program just to play another game?
Valve Fanboys. That's what the problem is.
People who don't want to deal with other publishers in the features launching their own exclusive distributions systems to the point where every game we want has to be found on another service.
It's not about liking one or the other. It's that fact that nobody wants to have multiple fucking online programs to get/play their games.
If origin was like steam and valve was the one putting their games on an exclusive platform then I'd be using origin instead.
I want an online service that has all my games, and steam fits that. I don't want to have games on steam, games on origin, and games on other possible future systems. One service is all that's needed.

Generally speaking most platforms for downloading games are shitty, useless, and sluggish.
Steam is an exception because it's run by a company that likes to constantly add new features into the platform, do maintenance, and also has a lot of respect by the video game community.

This exactly, basically.

I tried with the BF3 alpha, it wouldn't let me play it unless I was logged into origin.

Because it was the alpha, they probably wanted to keep a tighter control over it.
I tried to buy 2142 over Origin and it didn't work 3 times, honestly, I want that on steam, at least I can buy stuff there.
Steam is just a better service, that's all there is to it for me.

Sums up most peoples reasons on disliking Origin rather nicely.
Couldn't have put it any better myself.

Seems appropriate for this thread.

Pretty much this..
I have nothing against Origin, but that doesn't mean that I wouldn't prefer it to have EA games on Steam.
However there's one thing I noticed, that I hope will get fixed, when I played the Battlefield 3 Alpha:
With Origin started in the background I had FPS drops in the game and if I closed Origin through the taskmanager they were gone. This happened, because Origin sometimes used up to 50% of my CPU cores.
Maybe it was just on my computer, but it was still pretty annoying.
If they would release the game on both and just say "Steam users may experience a delay in updates" I am sure this would stop all the griping.
My experience with origin hasn't been bad, but it hasn't been anywhere as good as steam has it where everything is nice and integrated, sure back in 05 and 06 it was kinda slow/buggy, but it was the first of its kind.
Also lol at the "too restrictive" I don't see any indie devs complaining about steams policies, how can a multi-million dollar corporation not be able to do something indie devs can do with ease?
Gabe is a cool guy
I want BF3 on Steam as I don't want to have to go offline on steam for it.
So your a Origin fanboy...makes complete sense.
It isn't black and white you muppet, there aren't just "Valve fanboys" and "origin fanboys". There are sane, reasonable people like me, The Golden and everybody else who isn't being a massive moron in some way who see both services as useful, good and flawed at the same time.
I'm not even going to bother arguing with people like you right now, I've done it every thread, debunked every argument, every fear and every hyperbolic claim about Origin. It's getting pretty fucking tiring having to deal with idiots because they are scared of a service that can't even compete properly or pose a threat with their precious Steam.
