Disability groups go to UN over Australia’s forced sterilisation practice.
The forced sterilisation of people with disability and the nonconsensual genital “normalisation” of intersex babies and children in Australia are being brought to the United Nations torture committee.
People With Disability Australia (PWDA) are campaigning for a royal commission into the incidence, forms and circumstances of exploitation, violence and abuse of people with a disability in the community in Australia. A 52-page submission to the UN details legislative failures in Australia which it says make forms of torture legal.
Forced, involuntary or coerced sterilisation of people with disability, particularly women and girls with disability and people with intersex variation, is an ongoing practice in Australia, the submission says. It also noted the involuntary or coerced treatment of infants and children with intersex variations in the form of “sex normalising” surgery in Australia.
Legislation varies from state to state and though there are some protections in certain states against the forced sterilisation of children, there is no law in Australia which explicitly prohibits it.

Is this bad or good?
Is this bad or good?
Would you like to be turned into a girl or boy after you are born with no choice in the matter?
Is this bad or good?
This is a pretty terrible question. It depends what you find valuable.
Is this bad or good?
i consider forcibly sterilizing children bad, i don't know about you
I had no idea this shit was going on in my country. This is disgusting.
The article mentions rough incomplete (due to the government, not The Guardian) data on how many applications were sent in and how often this (forced steralisation) is occurring. It would be interesting to see some examples of when they've sent in an application or how the child subject to one was disabled. Just to understand what they were thinking when they decided it was appropriate to do such an extreme thing.
Sometimes Australia disappoints me, this is one of those times.
Eugenics is disgusting.
I had no idea this was even happening.
Australia confirmed for imperium of man.
Sucks for the people getting sterilized, but better for us in the long run.
Sucks for the people getting sterilized, but better for us in the long run.
Nonsense, considering it seems that a whole great deal of the things they are sterilizing people for are hardly likely to be inherited by the offspring.
this is some shit straight out of Nazi Germany.
Australia confirmed for imperium of man.
The majority of us have no idea this is happening.
Still absolutely disgusting though.
Sweet fucking christ, and this is in Australia? My home country? The place I plan to live in for the rest of my life? What the flying shit. What disabilities does it involve? I hope Autism isn't part of it.
this is some shit straight out of Nazi Germany.
That would be euthanising the disabled- this is still fucking disgusting, though.
While I disagree with this, it does touch on the taboo subject of: What the fuck are we going to do with all these people?
The majority of us have no idea this is happening.
That's what he said.
That would be euthanising the disabled- this is still fucking disgusting, though.
Incorrect. The Nazis' sterilized many minority groups they deemed "untermensch" (sub human) such as black people and the physically disabled.

Although it is true that they did a bit of both killing and sterilizing to these groups.
It's hard to think shit like this happens in my Country
Well I hope they get their royal commission that's for sure
Yes it sounds bad but the fact that were having enough children born intersex for this to be a big enough thing to make news like this does raise some concern, humans are generally meant to be born one sex or another not both.
Granted the forced sterilisation is a bit harsh, unless its a disability thats spreading at a huge rate and is going -infect- the gene pool and cause Australia's downfall I cant really see it being needed.
Although
According to the committee, 47 applications to sterilise people with disabilities were approved by tribunals or courts over the past 10 years in Australia, excluding the ACT and Victoria.
Thats really doesn't seem like a high number?
Better that then having 90% of people becoming disabled/defected
What type of disability warrants sterilisation? Is it an amputation? Probably not.
Is it a serious mental disability or developmental anomaly which has no real chance of being inherited by the offspring? If so that is slightly concerning.
But if it's what I just mentioned but with a high chance of it being passed on to offspring, then I am in full support of it as no child deserves to be born seriously crippled mentally or physically when such an outcome is almost assured.

ONE is too high of a number of forced sterilizations

Does it really matter if someone is born intersex? Unless their lives are in danger due to that, I don't see a reason for the government to enforce such extreme actions upon the person.

First of all, no disability can somehow spread or infect the gene pool in any measurable way. The basics of genetics do not function that way.
Thats really doesn't seem like a high number?
That's still 47 people who may wanted to have children who were forced not to have any.
Better that then having 90% of people becoming disabled/defected
Please take time to eventually learn genetics.
Better that then having 90% of people becoming disabled/defected
Instead of taking the creepy Nazi route of eugenics, why don't we just research says to make the world a better place for disabled people?
Disabilities and genetic mutation will never be wiped out from our society, so we should be focused on helping people instead of "curing" the problem.
You may find this an unusual perspective but a lot of you guys don't understand disability, it is easy to take the moral highroad when you have no experience in such a field. I volunteer at two disability centers helping people integrate in to society and enjoy themselves, hell, I have awards for it. I fucking love their smiles and reactions.
I even have experience with it in my family life. My older brother, who has a mental handicap, I would take a bullet for him. One of my goals in life is to make his life as good as possible, to see him smile. So I take him out to gigs, WWE (even though Its cheesy he loves it) and quiz nights (seriously, he is crazy intelligent when it comes to quizzes)
Yet i have seen the reality of it. And as much as it pains me, most people with disabilities' (which are not minor physical disabilities) cannot even care for themselves and for them to have a child would be selfish.
Using phone so forgive any spelling mistakes, its even my SO's and my anniversary but this post really resonated with me.

Can we sterilize you first and foremost? Would be even better

I understand your point of view and I agree that that some people should be discouraged from having children, but coerced castration is completely unacceptable breech of everything human.

Just keep in mind that right now someone is asking the same thing about you and yours. Don't assume you are safe, because as far above 'these people' you feel you are, you are just as far BELOW other people who look down on you.
