If you wanna see the 60 FPS version of this video, look here: http://www.gamespot.com/videos/reality-check-do-we-need-60-fps-on-ps4-and-xbox-on/2300-6415658/
This is not at all what I expected from a video with that title, I'm glad I was wrong. I came in here fully expecting a video telling me 30fps is perfectly fine (or even better than 60 because ~it makes the game look like a movie~), and that framerate doesn't affect responsiveness at all
Watching him talk in 60fps felt bizarre
If i remember correctly, some research said people can only see difference in framerates below ~70 or so FPS. Above that, people cant notice the difference.

Ambient lighting for example makes a hell lot of difference, try playing a game at say, 40 fps in the middle of the day, and at night with your lights off, it will appear much smoother when it's dark.
Watching him talk in 60fps felt bizarre
But my eyes were resting on that 60FPS vid.

Obviously after a certain point you can't tell, but I think that point is closer to 100fps. Those people that argue as if it's religion "Oh you can't see more than 30" need to shoot themselves, though I prefer about 50+. 50 leaves a small cushion for drops that won't affect you too much, but 30 gives me a headache after a while, and when the framerate drops when you pull 30, it's extremely noticeable and really affects the gameplay
a lot of the reactions in fast paced fps games don't need to consciously register to happen, like noticing a target, twitch aiming and engaging, a lot of the conscious processing is simply bypassed and it's more of a much faster reflex thing in that case the difference between 30/60/120 fps can really fuck you up or help you win
60 FPS makes my eyes happy. Nice and silky smooth.
Watched the Gamespot version. I am never going to get past the 60 FPS for videos.
Watching him talk in 60fps felt bizarre
It's the same experience you get when switching from a 60hz monitor to 120hz monitor. The weirdness goes away after a while. But if you're used to 120hz, going back to 60hz feels like lag/framedrop/a bad thing until you get used to it.
60 FPS sounds about right, any higher than that and our processors'll likely overheat. I'm always gonna use Vertical sync.
Is this why when I play mount and blade, people always seem to shoot me first WHEN I FUCK SHOT THEM!?
I didn't know about that tidbit about the lightbulb, that's cool. Yeah I've had 60fps forever on my PC and it's just so great. 24fps or 30fps is great for cinematic stuff though, I regularly use that in SFM.
Is this why when I play mount and blade, people always seem to shoot me first WHEN I FUCK SHOT THEM!?
That'd probably just be lag and lag compensation
Ugh, I remember when I played games with 20-30 fps. It always gave me a disadvantage. I don't know how console players can play repeatedly for so long, when that's happening. A crystal clear 60fps at all times is wonderful, everything is smooth(when the game has smooth animations and such..), it's crisp.. Yeah.
When I play at 30fps it feels like my eyes are straining, but at 60fps it just feels goood.

I would agree that higher frame rates will increase your performance since you can see things and react to them slightly faster
Watching The Hobbit at 48 fps was a treat, I hope P Jackson starts a trend. Why wasn't the Hobbit released at 48fps on blu-ray? I don't have IMAX anywhere near me, 150km to the nearest one.
Dumb question, something that is mind boggling to me- I know that cinema is now 24fps. I also know that if you lower those significantly, everything will be sped up as fuck, and if you rise them significantly, you get slo-mo. So I was wondering, why if a game is performing bad and gives fewer fps gets this slideshow-effect slow and you see jumps, and if it performs up to 120fps it's even better? is it because of the refresh rate? I don't understand..

Jesus christ the 60fps video looked horrible. Whenever he moved his head around a little it looked like a cartoon.

This time difference is used to advance animations and other things in a game. Let's say you have a 100 frame GIF image you want to display and animate in a game in 1 second. If what you said was true we would go to the next GIF frame the next game frame. This is wrong because if your game changes FPS it will affect the rate of the animation. The game would have to be running at precisely 100 FPS at all times if its duration were to be 1 second which is obviously not feasible. The way games do it is that they take they measure the time it took to render the last frame. This number is used to advance animations and such so they give you the same duration regardless of your FPS.
Finally. I always thought there was a difference, but every time I would point out to my friends how choppy their console game looked they always told me that it looked fine for them. I thought it was just my imagination.
The sad part is that even though he specifically stated there's no evidence people "Can't see above 30", the people who believe that won't watch the whole video. I'm running 120hz and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
wow, i used to be one of those "your eye can't see past 30 fps" guys, but this woke me up.
It's crazy there needs to be a video explaining this. Surely everyone knows what frames per second is, it's in the title.
What about 180 hz?
My pc can't get good enough performance for that to really matter. I would want to play 180fps at 180hz.
