(info from wiki) Tool is a Grammy Award-winning American rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1990. Since their inception, the band's line-up has included drummer Danny Carey, guitarist Adam Jones, and vocalist Maynard James Keenan. The current bassist is Justin Chancellor, who has been with the band since 1995. Tool is known to have rigorous touring schedules in support of their albums, they have performed well on charts worldwide, and have sold an estimated 9.25 million records in the US alone. Due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and relatively long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship and the band members' insistence on privacy. They have 4 albums and in order of release they are Undertow, Ænima, Lateralus and 10,000 Days. Tool are amazing. Seriously. They sound like nothing i have ever heard before and probably nothing you have heard before. If your a musician the music is very fun and slightly easy to play. (Especially the bass lines) You might have heard them on Guitar Hero 4? The Music is complex. Most of the songs are in 4/4. Some however are not. Lateralus for example has no time signature. It is also an amazingly good song. Schism is 6.5? Try and tap to that. Also the drums are often completely out of time with the guitar and bass. If you dont love them already from my meagre description... Here is a taste of their endless talent and uniqueness.
Lateralus for example has no time signature. It is also an amazingly good song. Schism is 6.5? Try and tap to that. And the band was actually joking when they said it's 6.5/8.
Schism is renowned for its use of uncommon time signatures and the frequency of its meter changes. In one analysis of the song, the song alters meter 47 times.[3] The song begins with one measure of 5/4, followed by 21 measures of alternating 5/8 and 7/8, until the first interlude, which consists of one bar of 3/8, three bars of 13/8, and a bar of 10/8 (This can be also interpreted as four 13/8 bars, but played with a 3/8 upbeat). The following verse is eight bars of 6/4, which is then followed by an interlude that repeats the pattern of the first. The next section is four bars of 6/4 followed by one bar of 11/8. Another eight-bar verse in 6/4 follows, followed by another interlude, except the final 10/8 bar is replaced with an 11/8 bar. This introduces the middle section, which consists of four bars of 7/4, before moving into a pattern of alternating one bar each of 12/8 and 15/8, repeated twelve times. Following this, there are three bars of 4/4, one bar of 2/4, and four bars of 4/4 setting up another section, which is two bars of 9/8 followed by a bar of 10/8, that pattern again, a single bar of 9/8 followed by a 13/8 bar. This leads to an alternating set of 9/8 and 5/8, appearing four times before a bar of 9/8 and a bar of 6/8. This leads to the 'outro' section, which has a 6/4 meter for eight bars, followed by eight bars of 4/4 to end the song. In all, the song changes meters 47 times.
Anyway as for the band. They're okay. I used to listen to them a lot but not so much anymore.
i have a very limited education yes. thanks for the correction. i wouldn't want to mislead these poor people.
Tool is one of the greater bands of the now.
totally agree =D
Nope, I'm still not a fan of Tool. Just something about them. I think it's the vocalist, but I just can't put my finger quite on why. Not to say they're not good. They're definitely good, and deserve a good amount of recognition (though I do feel they're a little overpopularized, but that's just my own opinion.)
i think they are under popularized... but its your opinion. i just wish i could change your mind.
I know right? :P
Tool is one of the better bands there are.
post your favourite songs and let me know why you love them =]
I dont get whats so great about them. Everyone is praising them, so I decided to check them out. I was very dissapointed.
Tool is awesome, they're so unique compared to others
Tool is definitely among my favorite bands at the moment. They easily have on of the most talented rhythm sections I have seen to date. On the flipside I definitely do understand how many people don't like them, as they have a very foreign sound and rather uncomfortable rhythms to their music. Also for the sake of posting for more reason than adding sound to the void might I suggest Igor Stravinsky to any fan of Tool's that also enjoys classical(Neoclassical in this case) music. He too is known for his "savage" rhythms, most prevalent in songs such as The Rite of Spring and Night on Bald Mountain(a personal favorite of mine)
Tool is awesome, they're so unique compared to others
totally
Facepunch's very own Tool post. I give it a 10/10 eyes closed.
I just saw them live on the 22nd, they were amazing and refreshing after sitting through linkin park. Also not to be a dick, but: http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=587488
Tool has to be my favorite band, Maynard's vocals and lyrics are just orgasmic.
I dont get whats so great about them. Everyone is praising them, so I decided to check them out. I was very dissapointed.
I felt the same way, bored out of my mind listening to it, until I started listening very very closely to each song.
Lateralus: The Pot: both videos dont actually have a video created by the band. but these are very intresting anyway.
Dont forget Vicarious, had a great video and is an awesome song!
My favorite album is AEnima. But The Pot might be one of their greatest singles.
Yeat i think AEnima could be my favourite album too. as for singles... AEnima and Lateralus i think.
You have no idea how happy this thread has made me.
This band is just too intellectual for my small mind to comprehend, sorry.
Dude Tool's good and everything, but you haven't heard Danny Carey and James Maynard until you've heard Green Jello:

Alex Grey did a lot of the art for Tool
First off Maynard's voice gives me the chills.. There cool because they do not releases the lyrics until people figure them out..Just a cool fact. Also the bassist is incredible. Once again another band that holds a place in my heart. Maynard stands for a lot and hes a crazyy guy. Watch interview of him on youtube.. funny shit.. Thanks for the thread.
