The news comes after many Ouya developers have gone public with disappointing initial sales numbers on the console, ranging from the hundreds to the low thousands.
Not surprising because android.
So what like 50 people bought an Ouya game?
Most people got the OUYA for emulators and the ability to use Amazon Instant/Netflix/Hulu/Crackle/Showtime On Demand/HBO Go and play any media format they desire. It's the most capable media center on the market for the $99 price point by a mile.

I'm not educated on the subject but isn't there a shitton of Android TV sticks that does just as well for a much lower price?
Not surprising because android.
Piracy isn't the reason, the reason is because every game needs to have something that you can play for free and the few good games the system has are either completely free already or have almost full free versions.
It's literally right there in the article that you didn't read.

One of the most prominent criticisms of the Ouya is that there cheaper alternatives for that

Yes those 50 people bought all 1400+ copies of towerfall :v:
It would be interesting to see how many people have bought Ouyas though, considering the massive support it got on kickstarter.

Yeah but it lacks USB support and it's not as refined for the television. Generally you end up needing to spend another $40-50 for a remote/keyboard/mouse and even then, you've been downgraded in terms of hardware and features. Not to mention if you're running a media center, XBMC is officially supporting the box and it will be optimized.
I'd much rather pay $99 for something like that than some $40 HDMI dongle that isn't that great and lacks support.
The system wasn't really aimed at people who buy games...

So much for it being advertised as "a new kind of game console" then.
Does anyone know if they charged anything for the emulator? If it was free, this might explain things.

They can't charge for the emulator iirc
Or just about every emulator I've ever seen is free

It can't be a paid thing, even if it was people would pirate the emulater
might as well start a toiletpaper brand named ouya cus i'd probably only wipe my ass with it
Ashens' video was the first time I'd ever heard of an Ouya. I don't know much about it but it sounds pretty disappointing considering he found it in a second hand shop when it wasn't even public yet.

Kinda sad that one of the lead designers of Journey jumped shipped to join Ouya. I guess it fits though because on a podcast I was listening to she literally sounded like she could be a stereotypical hipster indie hippy type lady who has a business degree and probably only buys all food from whole foods while biking to work everyday with a scarf on. That kind of "its a free world, separate from the corporate shackles.. man!" mentality is the perfect type of mentality the people behind Ouya must have in order to even start thinking it was a good idea.
Its clearly not going anywhere and not financially viable for any developers unless you love freeware. So... I guess its good as a freeware box?

Slower single core processor
Less memory
Extremely minimal storage
No case meaning it's exposed and prone to damage
2 USB ports
No power supply meaning USB hubs are likely not to work
No WiFi (requires USB adapter)
No Bluetooth (requires USB adapter)
No keyboard (requires USB device)
No mouse/remote (requires USB device)
No storage for media meaning you'll need an external hard drive or something
Not exactly user friendly
Requires a lot of tinkering to get it working

Which would explain why it's doing so poorly since most people already had the means to do all those things (with better quality) before the OUYA was even an option.
did they release skyrim yet? Money will flow in once they do that.
I didn't even know it was released ._.
Well, most Ouya owners paid for the console, that's bad enough.
